Digital Camera Input

Submitted by jennye on Fri, 12/30/2005 - 9:19am.

I need some opinions. Ya'll aren't an opinionated bunch, are you? LOL!!!!

I'm shopping for a new digital camera. I'm had a Nikon CoolPix 800 and 885. Not a big fan. I got the 800 in 2000. Worked good, I was blown away having a digital camera rather than film. But the slightest jar broke the darn thing. It was still under warranty, Nikon fixed it. A couple years later, same thing happened (it fell 2 feet, in it's case, in the snow. Hardly a hard fall). Cost me $200 bucks and Nikon sent me a refurbished 885.

Now it's acting up. Batteries won't stay charged for long at all, many blurry pictures. And lately, I'm just not happy with the picture quality.

I'm looking for under $300. Any input about what you like and dislike about your cameras would be great!!
TIA!

I am also looking for a new

I am also looking for a new digital camera. I have an olympus and really like it, but want more zoom and a sharper picture. I am going to look this afternoon at different models. Online I found an Olympus SP-500 uz at Circuit City for $329.00. The batteries are supposed to last longer and it has a 10 or 12x zoom.

Canon

I have a Canon Powershot A70 I got 2 years ago for 350.00. Love it! 3.2 megapixels. I know you can get a better Canon camera now for less $. It has taken some hard falls and has kept on working. I would definitely buy a Canon again.

I have an Olympus D-520 Zoom

I have an Olumpus D-520 Zoom that I got in Jan 2002. It's a 2.0 megapixel with 3X optical zoom. It's treated me very well for almost 4 years. I like it because it's point & shoot, it's small enought to fit in my purse, and more than sufficient for snap shots. My 2 cents worth is whichever you choose, get optical zoom, use lithium batteries, and look for one with infinite focus option -- I can't take pictures through a window.

I still have my original Canon that I bought in the late '90s. John wants to upgrade but so far I haven't seen a reason to! Yesh, I are a computer pro!

Canon Powershot A70

Surprise -- I have the same camera as Andrea! (We have so much in common . . . ) I quite like it, it has never caused any problems, and I enjoy the 30+ sec movie feature. And my camera too has seen its share of hard knocks. I'd guess I got it for Christmas in 2002 or 2003.

I think we did some consumer reports research before buying it, but that was a while ago.

Me three

I have this camera, too, bought in 2003 when we were house-shopping. This has been a good camera for us in that it has enough features to (usually) satisfy my serious photographer husband, yet still has a couple of modes easy enough for point-and-shoot me. Some friends of mine have the A75 model that followed ours, and Canon even fixed the annoying mirror-shiny panel around the screen that was too bright in direct sunlight to see your pictures. Under normal circumstances it has very little shutter lag and takes pictures decently in medium-to-low-light settings. One other nice feature is that it takes 4 AA batteries, which are usually pretty easy to find. I'd definitely buy another.

Nikon Cool Pix

Is what I have too, the newest version. My mom, a retired professional photographer bought it for me for my b-day the end of July, and it's been great so far! It did get dropped a couple times and has survived. I will be gentle with it though now I know you've had trouble. It has 5.1 mega pixels and I have found the clarity to be excellent, when I print on good paper.

And I've got no complaints. We got the camera two years ago and it's survived several falls, which all my cameras must--I'm a klutz. The newer version of my camera has an even bigger viewscreen, too.

What I like about my camera, it's small, light, point-n-shoot, the card holds lots of photos, they're photo-quality, and it's easy to upload them to the computer with a card reader. I also like that it takes regular AA batteries--we have two sets of rechargable batteries and swap them out as soon as one set of batteries goes down. So much nicer than having to buy new lithium batteries all the time.

The only drawback is the 3x optical zoom lens. I like a lot more zoom than that. Don't use the digital zoom, the photos are grainy and it's not photo-quality.

Sony for me

I have a Sony 7.5 pixel and love it! Easy to use, easy to hook up to the pc via usb, uses Sony memory sticks that show up on your pc as a hard drive "removable storage". Battery lasts for at least 20 hours on one charge! This is the third Sony digi I have owned and loved every one of them.

3.1 megapixels, 3x optical zoom, love it!
My husband bought it a few years ago, and I have commandeered it for my own use. Most of the pictures on my blog are taken with this camera. I also have an HP Photosmart 435. It also has 3.1 megapixels but does not have optical zoom. It's also a good camera.
