Sock help!

Submitted by Honey on Fri, 12/30/2005 - 6:58am.

You may remember I wanted to knit a scarf as a Christmas present for my Mum. I ended up knitting 5 different scarves as presents and all were received very well Big grin so it's time to progress to socks, I fancy. I have absolutely no idea where to start. I have some soft and fluffy yarn I'd like to use, so I thought I'd start with a pair of bedsocks for myself. I'm hoping someone has a pattern for idiot proof simple socks to knit? Big grin

socks are way too much fun

Best sock book going: Folk Socks by Nancy Bush. Second best, though it has a spinning and dyeing component: Twisted Sisters Sock Workbook. Cat Bordi's 2-circular technique ("Socks Soar on Two Circular Needles" I think it's called) is also good if you don't like double points. Personally I do. Find a local group of knitters who hang out and I'm sure you'll find someone to walk you through it.

How about crochet?

Does anyone here crochet or have a pattern for bed socks? I can knit a little, but crochet is more my thing.

Love those skull socks of fury, Anhata!

Lynn, those books you mentioned - how basic are the patterns? Really I need a pattern for someone who has never knitted a sock before, as I am utterly baffled by the patterns I have looked at. I didn't realise how complicated it was, the whole things reads like double dutch to me. Or am I just stupid? Sad Don't answer that! Big grin I don't know any real life knitters at all, and there are no local knitting groups Sad Folks I know don't do 'crafty' things - my friends think I'm quite odd Smiling

Really good sock instructions

are available at Knitter's Review--The Sock Knitter's Companion: Step-by-Step Help. It's really clear, simple, and free.

The Folk Socks book Lynn mentioned has a super simple Basic Sock pattern in the front where you can choose from several different heel and toe techniques until you find the heel/toe shape that best fits you. I'd try that book after you've tried the Knitter's Review online help.

There is also a website called KnittingHelp.com that has free online knitting videos, including one about working the heel of a sock.

I've knitted one pair of socks so far, and it's not too hard...just don't expect your first pair to be perfect! I'd link to the pic I uploaded of my first pair of socks, but I can't seem to get at the images. Hmmm. Should ask Lynn about it, huh?

What scarf pattern did you end up using? Did you do the Martha Stewart one? I finished the Harry Potter Gryffindor scarf for my niece in plenty of time for Christmas and she loved it!

Fab yarn works miracles for bad knitting

Submitted by Honey on Thu, 01/05/2006 - 4:46pm.

I was thinking of the Martha one, but when I went to buy the yarn I was amazed at all the weird and wonderful yarns there were to choose from. So I ended up doing very basic scarves, but they look good because of the fab yarn! That's MY kind of knitting Big grin For Mum's scarf I used a green funky fur, I did another in pink eyelash, and others in a kind of feathery yarn, I think it was called plume. Just knitting and purling, nothing fancy. I am a very slow learner - it's taken me about three years to pluck up the courage to knit something other than dishcloths and teacosies!

Thanks for the links Anhata, I'll check those out and let you know how I get on...
