Sad day, Vanilla has gone to kitty heaven :(

Marlene's picture

Sorry to have to post this, but we just had our dear cat Vanilla put down. Turns out he had feline leukemia. We are just beside ourselves with grief. The worst is DD18 she is just hysterical. Our son doesn't know yet...he is still at school. We now have to get our other 3 cats tested as it is passed from one cat to the next.
I've attatched a picture of him, he was also deaf, but very entertaining.
Thanks for listening,
Marlene

How Sad

He was beautiful, and I see where you got the unusual name. I'm so sorry.

Sorry

20+ years ago I lost my beloved Misha to feline leukemia. He was my only friend at the time. Here's hoping your other kitties are clear.

So sorry Marlene--

My good friends have five cats and love them to pieces. I can imagine how rough this is for your family.

Having to have a beloved kitty put down is the hardest thing I've ever had to do. It's heartbreaking. I'm so sorry for your family's loss.

What hurts most

I don't know if any of you have had this problem before, but both my kids (teens) are angry with me because of his illness. They think there was something more I could do. Maybe its their way of dealing with it?

What a terrible thing Marlene. My sympathy goes out to you. I dthink it is natural for people, esp. kids, to blame. They will come around sometime.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I know how you must be feeling; the cat I grew up with, Henrietta ("Hank"), had to be put down for the same reason when I was 13 and it still hurts sometimes.

perhaps some more information for them

Anhata's picture

would it help to get them some info on feline leukemia and why Vanilla had to be put down? This sounded very sudden, that's probably part of it. When my kitty was sick, she had cancer and her organs were shutting down. We knew we had to put her down but waited a couple of days so that we could prepare ourselves to say goodbye to her. It may be that it was so sudden they didn't feel like they got the chance to say goodbye?

My apologies if this is presumptious to assume. I really am sorry for your loss. Beloved kitties and doggies are so much more than pets, they are family members and we love them sometimes more sweetly than fellow humans, because they're so innocent and unconditional themselves.

I am so sorry for your loss. And as for the kids, sometimes anger is a way to deal with these things and the feelings they are having. It will probably soon pass.

So sorry

Marlene, I'm so sorry to know of your beloved pet's passing. It was a humane and ultimately loving choice you had to make...but not an easy one, I know. Your teens will understand that, given a bit of time.

Blessings,
Lenora

Thanks everyone...

The kids are fine now, and I got an apology from DD. I did find a lot of info on the web about this, and they understand now. The other three are getting tested tomorrow morning, but we made the decision that even if one or all are positive, we aren't putting anyone down until they show signs of being sick. Two of my cats are senior citizens, and I certainly am not going to do anything rash.
Glad to have all your shoulders to cry upon!!
