Where do I begin?

I'm really swamped.

We went to visit my parents in Kansas for Thanksgiving, but it wasn't quite the usual Thanksgiving break. My maternal grandmother died a couple of years ago and the estate is finally being dealt with, so my parents had storage lockers full of furniture and other things that needed to be sorted through. I went out the Sunday before and my husband followed on Wednesday. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday were for sorting, Wednesday we picked up the truck and loaded the piano, Thursday was Thanksgiving (and a little sorting), Friday we loaded the truck, and Saturday and Sunday we drove home. We got in late Sunday night after driving in rain and heavy traffic...and got the truck stuck in our driveway. I knew we should've rented a smaller one! Our driveway slopes up steeply from the road and levels out farther up, and the truck was just too long. The bar the trailer hitch was attached to dug into the asphalt and buried itself so well we couldn't back up. Couldn't go forward because the bumper wouldn't clear. We had to call a truck tow truck to come and lift us up so we could back out. (My husband said we'd paid the stupid tax for a while!) Fortunately, our neighbor's driveway is much shallower and we were able to park there overnight. Monday morning movers came and helped us unload. Thankfully the truck wasn't all that full and it took them less than three hours. We cleaned out the truck, returned it, picked up my car from the airport, ate dinner out, and collapsed. Whew!

So now I have a house full of nice furniture and other things. I have a piano (I've been wanting one for years!) and I think I could play all day. Smiling But I also have a house that's now desperately in need of sorting, straightening, and cleaning, not to mention decorating. I'm going to have to make some sort of sense of it quickly so I can get moving on Christmas decorating and baking. Some of the excess furniture will need to be sold--I think maybe I'll see about a classified ad in the local paper for that, unless anyone knows a good way to do it online. The rest is mostly a matter of finding homes for new things. It's going to be a challenge to get this done before my in-laws come for Christmas!

How nice is that! Enjoy it by sitting back and playing for a couple of hours!

Made a start

Submitted by Sparrow on Tue, 11/29/2005 - 9:34pm.

I've started, anyway--I did at least 5 loads of laundry tonight and moved things from our old dresser to our new ones. Also tried to rearrange the living room to a more useful state, put up a few Christmas decorations, and got my husband to put the piano bench together for me. And played a little, of course! Smiling It is awfully nice to finally have a piano. I had a keyboard since college, but it just wasn't the same. Now I can sit down and plunk out some Christmas carols when I get tired of cleaning. The cats don't know what to think--they go running under the futon. Eye-wink

A piano!

We're just enjoying having a piano around, as DMIL has one. However, neither DH or I have ever learnt, we're string players. However, we have a solution that works for simple stuff (like Christmas carols Smiling). I play the left hand (I play the cello so bass clef is my natural habitat) and he takes the right (he's a violinist. Perfect). It's SUCH fun!! DD gets completely fed up with us, though, because we always 'play' while we're running her bath, so it's always late.

We're going to have lessons in the new year. Can't wait Smiling

Duets are such fun!

How fun! Smiling I bet you'll love it! I could use some more practice with the bass clef, myself. Somehow after years of flute and singing alto, treble clef got a lot more practice and comes much more naturally! Sometimes I think of taking more piano lessons. I think maybe now I'd have the discipline to do the exercises and practice that I never wanted to do when I was a kid. Course, I had more time then. Oh well. Eye-wink

Ah, bass and treble clef...

DH always played brass in band in the bass clef--trombone & baritone. So when I started taking piano lessons a couple of years ago, he looked over my shouldrs and said, "What are all those lines and notes for above the bass clef?" I kid you not. (Took piano lessons for a year before we moved out west, loved it.)
