Rania Baz, Hero

Just how bad is it in Saudi Arabia for women? Horrifyingly bad, unimaginably bad. Rania Baz was a television anchor whose husband nearly killed her. She became basically the first Saudi woman to speak out about the culture of abuse. She even successfully sued her husband for divorce and won custody of her three kids--unheard of in the kingdom. Go get a free daypass for Salon and read this article, and then wonder how we can support such a country. Oh yeah, right, the oil.

Horrific
The abuse, the attempted murder, that it occured in front of their 5 year old child, all grotesque.
Also grotesque is that she lost her job because she came out about it, divorced him, and got custody of the kids. And that some people think that she betrayed her husband by doing so.
Anyone who's read the book written about the Saudi Princess in the 90s wouldn't be too surprised. She detailed numerous horrifec crimes against women too. Sorry, can't remember the name of the book at the moment, Diary of a Princess maybe?
