Tempurpedic
I have one and I LOVE it. I have fibromyalgia and the Tempurpedic has helped me tremendously. Your Mileage May Vary, naturally; some folks swear by the Select Comfort air mattresses. Me, the Tempurpedic. If I can help it I'll always sleep on one.

Tempurpedic
I had trouble with pressure point pain as I slept in a regular mattress even though it was a pillow top. I kept waking up through the night in pain to change positions.
After we got the tempurpedic I realized
--I didn't wake up several times a night having to readjust my sleeping postion
--my shoulders and hips didn't ache when I sleept on my side anymore
--my back didn't ache in the morning
--my arms didn't fall asleep anymore
--I honestly didn't toss and turn anymore. I was waking up virtually in the same position that I fell alseep in
I wouldn't ever ever give up the tempurpedic for any other mattress, no matter what kind of gizmo it was.
My mom has a Select Comfort and sleeps like a baby on it. For the first time, she says, she falls asleep as soon as her head hits the pillow and stays asleep all night. She also doesn't toss and turn anymore. However, the Select Comfort bedframe she has SQUEEKS horribly with every little move you make on it. Good thing she sleeps only with her dog and cats. I don't find it as comfortable as she does.
We got our tempurpedic on a special sale...we got it at a home show--a new store was opening and was having a new store opening discount on top of their show discount otherwise we might not have made the investment.
Oh, and the tempurpedic pillows ROCK, too. I love mine.

RE:Mattress?
I am sorry to hear about your back pain! If you are planning to go to a 1-800-Mattress, they will be able to answer alot of your questions there. I have actually been quite pleased with my past experiences with 1-800-Mattress. I also had some back trouble (bad sciatica) and they knew about my condition and made alot of suggestions for me. I was very impressed. Be careful with Tempurpedic, but try it out. It is either great or too hot. (I find them very warm.)
I am sure you will have the same experience!
Hope you feel better!
Mattresses
I know the tempurpedic mattresses are wonderful. The price just makes them too costly for me.
I use a heated mattress pad (with dual controls b/c I like it hot and dh likes it OFF). While the pressure issues are still there, they are diminished, esp since I put the pad OVER my down-alternative fiberbed. An electric blanket is not the same, and seems unsafe to me. If I toss around it gets wrinkled, which can create hot spots. It really makes a difference. I hate to sleep over at the inlaws b/c it is awkward to bring the heated mattress pad.
Just a thought, the heated pads are under $100 and the fiberbed was about $50. I bought them at different times, but they are amazing!
