Most people think yoga is just about relaxation and flexibility. Sure, after a busy day of working, shopping, and taking care of the kids, yoga is the perfect way to unwind. Practicing yoga is even a great way to tone and strengthen your muscles for better performance in sports. But can practicing yoga help your bedroom performance?
Yes indeed, says yoga instructor Jacqui Noelle-Greaux. As well as appearing on the Better Sex Through Yoga video series (available on www.bettersexthroughyoga.com), Noelle-Greaux is the author of a companion book by the same name (Broadway Books December 2005). "Try doing yoga before your honey comes home from work and see how yoga can get you centered, de-stressed and in the mood for love," she says. "Developing a loving connection to your partner is a great reason to practice yoga. This kind of energy is truly contagious."
According to Noelle-Greaux, yoga poses release muscle and tendon tension in areas such as the lower back, hamstrings, neck, shoulders, and pelvis. All this allows for greater flexibility...in bed. As Noelle-Greaux will tell you, the more flexibility you have, the more sexual positions you can experience and the easier access you will have to areas of sexual pleasure for both you and your partner. "Yoga allows you to focus on body parts that you don't use everyday," says Noelle-Greaux. "This can give you an entirely new sexual awakening."
Since few people have time in their busy schedules for an hour and a half of yoga daily, here are four yoga poses that Noelle-Greaux recommends for adding passion to your love life quickly and with ease. Try these moves in the evenings or mornings right before sex. If time is really tight, try them a few times a week whenever you have a moment. The most important thing is to just do them regularly.
Camel Pose Not only does this move look erotic, it also strengthens the lower back for fun moves in bed and gives nice shape to your butt. Here's how: Kneel with your knees hip distance apart or wider. Place your hands on your lower back and push your pelvis forward. Now, gently walk one hand at a time to your heels. Cup your heels and release your head backward, relaxing the throat. Hold for three full breaths.
Butterfly This is a must for pelvic flexibility, says Noelle-Greaux. Think of it this way: The more flexible you are, the more moves you and your partner can try. Here's how: Begin in a standing position, with knees touching. Bend your knees and sit on your heels. Slowly walk your hands forward while spreading your knees open. Go as far as you can. Press your hip bones toward the floor and try to touch the soles of your feet together. Hold for three deep breaths.
Sexy Spinal Twist This move is flirtatious looking and can even be used during foreplay with your partner. And to be sure, foreplay is a great way to get centered and ready for sex. Here's how: Sit on the floor with your knees bent and your right leg crossed over your left knee with your thighs together. Place your palms on the floor behind you with your fingertips facing backward away from you. Exhale and drop both legs to the right side and look over your left shoulder. Inhale and bring your legs back up and exhale as you bring your left leg over your right knee, dropping the legs to the left and gazing over your right shoulder. Repeat this five times on each side.
Corpse This pose may not sound sexy, but Noelle-Greaux says it's "the ticket to achieving mind blowing orgasms." It allows your body to feel soft-both inside and out-making you open and receptive to sexual sensations. Here's how: Lie on your back with your eyes closed. Turn your palms facing up with your arms at your side. Take a few deep breaths then relax into calm and regular breathing. Feel your body get heavy, warm and completely at ease. Stay I this position without moving for at least five full minutes. For maximum benefit for sex, do this pose anytime throughout the day so when it's time to have sex you'll be aware of your body and ready.
