I got an email from Susannah and she is fine just busy.

Our mini vacation was rained out so we went up one day and came back home the next. DSs are now making pipecleaner people and getting along pretty well considering it is still raining HERE! Can't get away from it but much better to be in your own surroundings when bad weather is out!!!

TADA:

DH and I have pampered each other to no end.
Dinner in the works....steak, green bean casserole and deviled eggs.

As you can see my first day of Spring Break involves NOTHING to do with house cleaning and EVERYTHING to do with taking it easy!!!! Tomorrow I will list a big PODA!!

Waves to everyone!

Andrea - DH is in love with the Dyson vacuum and wants one so bad. Truly the man gets all giddy when the commercial comes on. I think he just likes how the guys talks..... anyway, give me the low down on the Dyson!

News on Susannah

jennye's picture

Anne, I emailed her the other day. All is well, just been REALLY busy. The weather has been nice in Georgia and she has been getting mega yard work done. Also, her 4yo has taken over the computer.

No surprise, it's official. I even had the due date right on. I go back to the dr. for first prenatal checkup on Wednesday. We are going to the inlaws in a few minutes to tell them. Its been REALLY hard not to! Kids will also find out, though I'm sure they will be disappointed. I told them they were getting a surprise at Grammie's house.

Jamie Lea, did you get a nap?

I got all errands except Hobby Lobby done. Chance was HORRIBLE today at the drs, I didn't want to go thru that in HL. Did go to Walmart, though. Still have Booster club meeting tonight at 6 (don't forget control journal, it has my calander!!)

great news

Andrea's picture

HI all!

That's great Jenny - so excited for you! Let us know what the inlaws said and the kids!

Glad Susannah is ok - funny about the 4 year old!

Anne, lemon pound cake, oh my - I think I just gained 5 pounds! Yum.

Jamie Lea , hope you got your nap!

Shaun, that's fantastic about your promo! You must be a great employee!

Jana, I'm so glad you are enjoying your break so far! About the Dyson - we got it because we had just gotten our dog - a Corgi - you probably saw the Xmas photo, right? They shed terribly! We just got the basic one - 400.00 but I had the coupon so it was only 320.00. Well worth it! I am amazed at the really fine dust it gets from our area rugs. Plus the dog hair of course. The other reason we got it is DS's allergies - he suffers terribly from them so it was easy to spend the $ to help him feel better. Highly recommend them. I know Jackie has the purple "Barney" one - it is an upgrade and more $ - I think she likes it.

Worked today and will work tomorrow but I managed to make a good dinner - getting kids bathed, etc. now.

Andrea

good that Susannah's all right

Becky's picture

Anyone tell her that Jenny and I have news? Or are we keeping her in the dark until she returns? Evil

Haven't been home today, nor will I be tomorrow. I should be able to get some stuff done Wed. though.

Home alone

Shaun's picture

Kids are in bed and DH is still at work!! Aggh!

Did pretty good in accomplishing stuff today, though I still have more writing and straightening to do. Poor DH knows when he gets home he has to pitch in here too -- wish I could spare him the trouble but I gotta get working.

My "Promotion": I put it in quotes because I am still a freelancer/independent contractor. But now they have started hiring contractors to hire people like me -- which is what I will now do -- so basically I will be getting paid to hire myself plus copyeditors, proofers, and anyone else I want to work on my volumes. And I see them through from the research phase to final proofs on the way to the printer. Do I get more money? Depends on how much I have to pay the subcontractors! Pretty scary -- I like being a loner in my work, but I guess it's time to grow.

Anne, what is it with you and the baking? It is making me very very jealous!

I'd better get started so I can get to bed sometime before today becomes tomorrow.

Shaun
"Where are we going? And why am I in this handbasket?!"

Shaun - my aunt does your "promotion"!

Jana's picture

She loves it and in fact is trying to prep me to be able to do some proofing. I just ordered some books ot help me learn the lingo and such. She does educational workbooks.

Our roof is finally getting done...we have 2 serious leaks, and with the amount of rain we have been recieving, it has been a bit of a mess. But the roofers have been very backed up and the rain messes them up too! I made some cinnamon rolls for the workers. Yes, blantant suck up! Tomorrow is egg burritos! I want this roof to look good! Have a great Tuesday guys!

Jana

Well, I see congratulations are in order!

Susannah's picture

Becky and Jenny! I'm thrilled for you! Excellent news! Well, now I can't stay away because I can see I'm going to have to keep up with you guys.

Congrats to Shaun on the promotion! I'm glad to hear all the good news.

All this talk of Dysons is making me drool. Something went kaput in my vacuum yesterday...probably a belt, but it has to be taken apart.

Just a fly-by posting to say, yes, I've been raking and weeding the front "yard" (a.k.a. wasteland) to prepare for spring plantings. All our attempts at seeding have been unsuccessful in the back, so I'm online checking out landscape suppliers in our area for some soil amendments before we seed there again. Red clay, begone!

I've been busy around the house too. Scrubbed the front porch siding and furniture and it looks much cleaner now. Armor-alled the plastic furniture, hoping that would help repel the dirt in the future. Also, cleaned the bugs out of the kitchen bay window wells. All that remains is to scrub the porch itself. Nasty stuff, that red clay.

I also steam cleaned my very dirty master bedroom carpet and have been working on a frugal menu for the next few weeks. Was I ever surprised to learn that Leanne had come up with a Frugal Menu Mailer! I'll have to check that out! I got mine off a penny-pincher website. I've been through almost all the Saving Dinner menus in one year, so I'll redo our favorites from that book from time to time.

Today is Catch Up On Laundry Day. We had a pipe come loose under the house and I couldn't wash until DH jury-rigged it. Lotsa washing to do now. And folding and putting away, since we're having the kids' friends over tomorrow, after the Annual Tri-County Christian Home Educators' Spelling Bee. I guess I should come up with something to feed them, too, since they'll be here over lunchtime while their mom goes to a doctor's appointment.

Speaking of moms, mine is doing relatively well after her outpatient surgery. She overdid a bit, but is taking it easier this week. I sure hope this solves her health problem.

Now I'd better get back to work and relinquish the computer to 4yo! LOL! I might post a journal entry first.

Love,

Susannah

So glad you popped in Susanna

jennye's picture

So glad you popped in Susannah! But the Armor-all on something outside doesn't sounds good. I think it attracts dirt more than repels, but does make it look good temporarily. But we have more dust flying around out here than you do.

Shaun, congrats too on your promotion. I was so wrapped up in my own news I forgot that.

Anne, funny all the rain you've gotten in the past few days and none here! I guess you have heard from news the stuff going on up here in Portales. Not good, is it?

OMG, Old Navy has the CUTEST maternity spring dress!! I must have it!!! I'm going to have fun with new maternity clothes!! A cousin gave me all her maternity stuff after her third and last child and I found out I was having my first. Well, over the summer, surprise!! She was pregnant, so I gave all her stuff back. Now my wardrobe is in short supply, and I'm already not able to fit into most of my jeans (how did THAT happen!). BTW, she had her baby Saturday night, 8 minutes after arriving at the hospital. His name is William (Willie for short). Jeff now wants to name ours Waylon. Oh, NO!!! Waylon and Willie!!! HELP!!!

I had a sudden burst of energy and cleaned the living room and vacuumed. Chance is awake and as soon as it warms up just a tad more, we are going outside.

Oh, and we told the inlaws last night, and talk about thrilled! I'm so lucky to have good people like them. The kids are very excited, too, and can't wait to go to school to tell everyone today!

This afternoon I'm going to Ch'ree's teachers house to help figure out her CD burner so I can get pictures. We are also going to discuss our plans on a theme for Kindergarten graduation. We want to get a head start before Roommother from Hell gets involved (man, EVERYONE at school, from parents to students to teachers, feel the same way about this woman!!).

There are blooms on a tree in the front yard, I'm going to go take a picture of it! Ya'll have a great day!!

SusanY's picture

Just checking in. Not much going on around here. DS13 has volunteered to play a solo piano piece in next Tuesday's band concert. I think he will need all our prayers. He took lessons a few years ago, but didn't like reading music. So he basically plays by ear. Last night I heard him play the entire theme song from Phatom of the Opera (without sheet music). Well, he will be playing with the band and needs to play from sheet music. He currently plays the trumpet in the 8th grade band. I've asked a neighbor piano teacher to work with him on Thursday and hopefully DD will help this weekend.

Jo, about the Roomba: it has a little twirling broom arm that sticks out from the circle, so as it cruises past the baseboards or into a corner the little arm (one mini-broom on each end) reaches out and sweeps stuff into its path. And yes, it works on wood -- ours travels from wood to rug and back repeatedly in part of our living room, and it adjusts itself. We have mostly wood floors, which is why we wanted to Roomba. Hardwood is totally unforgiving -- a crumb here or there, a bit of dust, and you have a mess. No carpet to hind in.

Good luck with your roofers, Anne. Somewhere in my blog there is a story about our recent need for a new roof and my adventures with the skylight in our bathroom positioned directly over the shower . . . Now if that doesn't send the roofers running! Laughing out loud (But in which direction? . . . Evil )

Jana, you are having too much fun. I am working every single day until Easter to make up for all the time I've missed in the past couple of months, so I am really fantasizing about a little me time like that.

Hi to everyone else -- gotta inhale some yogurt and get to work!

Good Afternoon!

good to see that things are well,Susannah. What are you planning on planting in the yard?

Shaun-in case I didn't congratulate you,CONGRATULATIONS on the promotion.

Jenny- I knew that your news would be well received. Are you making a count down calendar for the kids so they don't keep asking "when will the baby come"??

Andrea- did your table arrive? Does it work well in the nook?

TADA
most of my PODA plus a bank deposit, gas in the van($2.01 per gal),bookstore to browse with DD

I knew we were running errands after preschool so I made her a sandwich to eat after I picked her up. Don't like to do that but today was an exception. Oh well...she figured it was like a picnic in the car!

Yesterday was in the 50's and the snow melted, today it is 23 degrees and snowing. Go figure....???

Need to pick out jewelry and black hose and shoes to wear with my dress Saturday. I am getting excited about this benefit dinner. It is the first one LDA has ever had.

Better go make that soup for dinner.

Yippee! Susannah's Back!

witchiepoo's picture

I need to adjust my PODA a bit and make an announcement...

I took a nap!

I know it may seem like nothing, but I do not nap and I've always wished I could. My college roommate did 30 minute power naps and DH does the same. I have always avoided naps because I end up sleeping for four hours and wake up in a really nasty mood feeling naseous. But today I was reading and accidentaly fell asleep. I managed to wake myself back up about 40 minutes later and I feel awesome!

TADA
dishes
laundry all done!!!
ham and acorn squash in the oven, beans bubbling merrily, will steam some broccoli and open a can of pineapple chunks to go with- a nice, bright meal on a dreary day!

DS went to grandma's and is not interested in looking at SAT CD, but that's fine, plenty of time for that.

Hi Flyfriends!!

Tigerlilly's picture

Hope everyone is doing good. We have had a busy two days. I worked yesterday so that always throws me off. We actually went out to breakfast today at IHOP and then to the mall before DH went to work and the big snow hit. We are actually becoming "normal" again. LOL Just when things are getting easier I want another. Whats up with that????????

Alexa is watching a Wiggles tape so I have to be quick- if i have to hear Fruit salad anymore I may go nuts but it does keep her busy for a few minutes or so. Bad Mommy....

Jana, we just got finished using "Barney" I love him!! I think the only difference is the pet hair attachment which I do use but no big deal if you dont get it. We love love our vacuum. One of my best investments. Dh got it for my anniversary (romantic huh??) and it still works like the first time I turned it on. It is so scary how much dirt and cat hair we have in this house!!!

Good to see you Susannah and I am glad everything is going well. Enjoy the nice weather! We went walking yesterday when it was 60 degrees here and now it is sleeting, snowing and supposed to be 0 degrees tonight! Uggghhhhhhhhhhhh..........

Jenny, I love all the maternity stuff too!! Old Navy is my favorite. And I just have to have the "undiaper" bag from babystyle.com. I just have to justify to DH why I would spend $58 on ANOTHER diaper bag. Its like pocketbooks, I am obsessed!!!!
Big wave to everyone else!!!!
Quick poda and tada (barely)
~went out to breakfast
~1 load of laundry folded one in the dryer
~did kelly's mission of wiping down all the kitchen counters
~swish and swipe bathrooms
~exercised. I actually wasted some more $ on exercise stuff. I bought Yourself Fitness for Playstation2. I figured Dh buys games all the time so I picked it us this am. Its pretty cool because you have a virtual trainer "Maya" and she sets up workouts for you in time intervals you cna do. Since I have like no time I did the 15 minute one and it felt great. Lets see if I stick with it. I always did the Firm for years but I do not have 55minutes or even 35 minutes 3 times a week right now. Sorry so off topic and long but I am excited..
Have a great day Love Jackie

hi

Andrea's picture

That's cool about Playstation Jackie! I didn't know you could do exercise stuff on it. We told our DS he couldn't get it until he was 10 and reading well - so I may have to wait a few years. Agree with you on the Dyson, love it!

The Roomba does sound really cool though Shaun! Good luck with all your work.

I gotta get DD tucked in - I'm off tomorrow and will check in!

Andrea

Hi Susannah! Welcome back!

Becky's picture

And thank you for the congratulations! I think you should send your red clay to Jenny; she misses it and doesn't like the NM dust.

Shaun, I am going to steal your Roomba. Do you ever have to use a regular vacuum too, or is it a complete substitute?

Jana- congratulations on finishing the taxes!

Jo- glad you got a day at home and a nap.

Glad your DH feels better, Heidi.

Anne, isn't the Kitchen Aid great? I might get mine out over the weekend. Maybe make some sourdough bread.

So Jenny, it's okay to get maternity clothes early-ish? It wouldn't make me a big dork? I feel so silly because it's my first, so maybe I'm overexcited or something. The one you linked to wouldn't flatter me, but JC Penney has two nice things I'd like.

Good luck to DS13, Susan. What is he playing?

Jackie, let us know how you like the Fitness Playstation thing. I had no idea they could do that.

Hi Andrea!

TADA:
-took second mid-term exam of the week at school (ugh)
-made OB appointment
-took a nap!

I still need to do a load of laundry after dinner if I don't want to go to school nekkid tomorrow.

okay...the maternity stuff at Old Navy is gorgeous!

Rooney's picture

I love OldNavy...so immediately clicked on Jenny's link...cute, cute, cute dress! I saw they now carry pleasantly plump sizes...so I decided to peruse them... Sad The same dress for maternity, just on a big chick! Sticking out tongue boo hoo on OldNavy... lol
great day...popped in on all my friends for 45 minutes each to get away from the scraping on my roof! We are now having 20-35 MPH winds...that will dry up any remaining water... Smiling
We had a guy from DH's work over...his wife is in NJ waiting for house to sell...one lonely man...he played with the kids all nite. Gonna have him over some more...poor guy.
Have one more chapter to read of WinnDixie...I read it and cried and cried, the kids thought I was just acting... silly kids...

Maternity fun

Shaun's picture

OK Becky, IMHO you are a classic first-time mom, b/c only a first-time mom can't wait to start wearing her maternity clothes! (And then, as the old joke goes, there's the 4th time mom whose maternity clothes *are* her regular clothes . . .) I do like the fact that maternity clothes tend to verify that you are indeed pregnant, not just gaining weight.

Oh Becky, another thing -- you should have a Roomba. I think we will keep our canister vac for the attachments, but I can't see why you would ever use an upright if you have a Roomba. It is divine! It's like a sweet little robot pet. Big grin

Jo, your dinner sounded wonderful.

Speaking of which, I've ticked off most of the PODA, but still have to order groceries and review the Bible study stuff.
My own healthy feast: Shaun's Mock Bolognese Pasta Bake (made with cannellini beans and Boca Italian sausage -- always a hit), sauteed kale with garlic, and left over cream of Brussels sprouts soup.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, making a decent dinner for the family always helps me feel I've redeemed myself from whatever else hasn't happened or went wrong that day.

See you all tomorrow!
Shaun
"Where are we going? And why am I in this handbasket?!"

no red clay

jennye's picture

Don't want that stuff in my laundry!

Becky, I see no problems in wearing maternity now. They are SO comfy! At least to me. I'm probably going to have to break them out sooner than I like, though.

I didn't get as much done outside as I had planned. The tumbleweeds are getting too big for the mower. Went to the teachers house and got her taken care of, her burner is now working on the 'puter. A sandstorm hit on the way home. Now, when I say this, I mean one second it was fine, and the next the sun was gone and the truck went into the other lane! LOL! It blew from the north, and there was a good 1/2 mile of dirt road that was COMPLETELY COVERED in tumbleweeds. I just had to plow thru it, they were all over my truck, even blocked the windshield totally! I probably looked like one big giant moving tumbleweed! And the ones that were on the north side of the road were jumping the fence and FLYING! I kid you not, it was the darndest thing!

Home safe and sound, I called my mom. She took it well, after I convinced her it was not a joke (I've done that to her before. LOL!). So did Gram. But I'm NOT telling my dad for a while.

DH said all of the sudden he can't go to my dr. appt tomorrow, and I can't very well take Chance because it's the pokin' and proddin' one. So MIL, even though she has a cold, is going to watch the boy. No time in the morning to check in, so I'll talk to ya laters!

Eek!

Becky's picture

Glad you survived the storm, Jenny!

Actually Shaun, it's not quite that cute-- these are summer clothes. Can't wear them for months, even here, nor do I want to; I need to hide this pregnancy until there is an official leave policy for the graduate school (supposed to come through in a month or two). It happens that there are some fantasy clothes I've had in my head for a couple of years that I just know would be good for me, and have never found in real life nor had the patience to learn to sew. I looked at the JC Penney maternity site and, lo and behold, there were maternity versions of ALL of them-- so that's where they'd been hiding.

Hi guys

jamielea's picture

You guys are hard to keep up with, I'll have to try and read threw later and see if I missed anything.
Becky, I say wear em' while you can. Like Jenny said they are so comfy.
Jenny, glad your ok, were the kids with you?

No flying today and you can tell Sad We had a field trip to the petting zoo this morning and then a late lunch at the pizza place after that. Trey had a great time, Savannah couldn't care less Laughing out loud For $5 he got a pony ride, time in the petting zoo, a hay ride, and a train ride! I was impressed! There's another group going at the end of the month and Trey wants to go back so we probably will. Tomorrow's park day for the homeschool group but that's not until 1:00, I'm hoping to get some stuff done before that.
PODA (for tomorrow morning)

Andrea's picture

Hi everybody -

The dress is cute Jenny - I am actually going to Old Navy today for a couple kid things.

Becky, why do you feel you need to hide it? That is a bummer/

Jana - our Dyson is the basic yellow one - not sure of the #. There is also red, green, and Jackie's purple - I think they have more attachments. They are bagless and you just dump the canister in the garbage when it's full or almost full. I never let it fill up it is so gross to look at. I think there is a filter, not sure, have to read my directions.

Shaun, that dinner sounds great.

Well, I am off shopping BY MYSELF after I do a Zone.

Bye!

Andrea

Good Morning

jamielea's picture

No TADA's to report. My front yard has been full of cops all morning. My neighbor called early this morning and asked if we knew the people sitting in front of our house for over an hour, we said no, so she called the police. About an hour later (first one arrived within a few minutes) there were 5 police cars, and a crime scene truck dusting the car for fingerprints and going threw all the contents. I don't have a clue what happened but they took both teenagers (18 or 19ish) to jail?

Like I said, I've done nothing on my PODA yet, still barefooted and in pajamas. It's 10:30, I need to leave for the park in a couple hours, hope to get something done before that.
OH, I did call about the moon bounce rental for Trey's Birthday. Found a place where I can get the Moon bounce, a dozen ballones, a pinata and stick, and a snow cone machine all for $125. Or another place where I can get a character bounce (spiderman, same as his party theme) for $95. Not sure what I'm going to do, what do you guys think? DH says whatever I want to do.

Anyway, off to try to get something done. I will be de-cluttering 2 very large Hallmark bags full of stuff at the park today. Today's Freecycle at the park, hopefully I come home with 2 empty bags and don't fill my bags with others peoples stuff Laughing out loud
See yall later.

Man, all they did at the dr. was paperwork crap. Was really a waste of time. But, I got to Hobby Lobby and got a scrapbook album for the baby's book. So, all was not lost. Go back to the dr. for my first ultrasound and stuff in 5 weeks.

May take care of bills today, plus more tumbleweeds. Yes, I now have more to mess with. Oh, well. And yes, the kids were with me last night. They thought it was pretty cool, especially when the flying ones would hit my truck. My poor truck though, I have new scratches in my paint job!

I logged on really fast and woohoo check out the new decor!! I love it!! Feels like when you first paint and rearrange your bedroom. So new and exciting Smiling

Today was a great day. Went food shopping, went for sushi with Alexa and Dh. Was our first time. Alexa had some salad with ginger but it irritated her sensitive chin. She did like the miso soup though. visited Mil, went to look at pergo wood flooring for our kitchen. I think Dh is going to attempt it next week while he is on vacation. Woohoo.. A whole week of Dh home. I am so excited!! We also visited my Mom fast and now we are in for the day. I am going to make some chicken cAcciatore for dinner and relax tonight. Alexa was up at 6am so I might be in bed really early tonight.

Becky- I say go for it with the maternity colthes. They are really comfy and it is such a special feeling wearing them for the first time. But it is true- I still throw on some stuff now Smiling

Jenny- glad your appointment went well even if it was a boring one. Did you get to see the heartbeat at least? I am so excited for you Smiling

OK gotta be fast bc I am going to try to take a nap while Dh drives Dstepson to work and Alexa naps. Have a great day. I may not be around much the next two days- I am visiting a friend in the am tomorrow and having dinner at Moms then work 12 @#$%^& hours on Friday!! UGGHHHHH>>> Then we are on vaca though I cant wait! Love Jackie

DD was so funny today. I talked to her yesterday about homeschooling, at the shop, and today she said, "I don't want to go to school anymore, I want to shopschool tomorrow." Shopschool? OK, that's what I'm calling it from now on...

Becky, I still wear some of my maternity clothes. They are comfy, and I say, ride the wave, go for it, enjoy!

Anne, I know just what you mean about mothering the work crew. Guilty! I just can't stop myself from cooking for all of them. In a couple of weeks I'll have another huge crew to nurture as they erect the shop. Cool.

Jackie, my kids are sushi fanatics, even DD4! DH hates it though, so we always go when we are shopping in the big city without him. It's a fun ritual.

Jamielea, go for the one with the pinata and snow-cone machine. You can never have too many forms of entertainment at a kid's b-day party!

Jenny, what a pain in the putookus! I hate waste of time DR. appointments. Phooey. They could have sent you all the paperwork to your home, and saved you a trip. And I'm sure they'll charge you for an office visit anyway. Grrr....

Hey, Heidi, do you guys do half birthdays too? DS14 and I do because we are in July and I always hated being overlooked as a kid because I never celebrated at school. I have brought in cupcakes for *my* half birthday to school the last three years. It was really fun!

Have a great night all!

Andrea, it's not that big of a deal-- I just don't want to tell anyone in my department I'm preggers until after they have given out next year's TA-ships and have finished making their official leave policy, so that I am negotiating leave from a position of strength. There is a way to work it so that I would essentially be home for all but four hours a week. It's okay though, because when they give out the TA-ships will be roughly the end of the first trimester, which will be when I'm more comfortable telling more people anyway.

Jamie, that's great that your neighbor was looking out for you!

Heidi and Jo, I'm an August baby and my mom gave me a half-birthday/ Valentine party when I was five or six. It confused the heck out of the guests, so some of them brought presents when they weren't really supposed to, but it was fun for me to spend time with friends at a different time of year when everyone was not out of town for once.

Sorry about the paint job, Jenny. Your appointment sounds even lesser than mine was! At least I got to pee in a cup.

Anne, what kind of food is at JR Rocker's?

Jackie, have fun with your DH at home!

Still need to do another load of laundry. I wish I could do the Flylady morning routine thing where you throw in a load before breakfast, put it in the dryer after breakfast, and then bring it up at the end of the morning routine. I used to do that some mornings; but I have to get to school earlier in the mornings this semester, it seems, and the laundry room in our apartment building doesn't open until 7:30 a.m.

On the maternity clothes thing: dilemma solved for now-- a friend of my mom's specifically wants to make me some, so I will have her copy the dress and top I want (it will be a nicer fabric anyway, and by the time she's finished with them I will be more likely to need them) and buy the pants because they are cheap and on clearance.

Nice New Wallpaper!

Susannah's picture

I like the changes. They're pretty.

I've gotta figure out how to type while Emma crawls over me repeatedly. It's like I'm a carnival ride, or something. Climb up one side, climb down the other, run behind the chair and do it all over again...

Jenny, bummer about the paperwork visit. Man, I hope they didn't charge you! The tumbleweed ride sounded exciting. No wonder the kids loved it.

Becky, just hearing about you gearing up for baby clothes makes me smile. Smiling I'm so excited for you!

Jo, I'm sending GA weather your way; here, let me stick my head out the window and blow as hard as I can towards the TN border! Laughing out loud Maybe if I got a lot of people together... Actually, it was cold here yesterday...but not THAT cold. I have a feeling by Easter I'll be digging around in the closets for our summer clothes.

Shaun, your cooking sounds lovely. Wish I could learn from you. I can just barely follow a recipe; that's it. The ability to "whip something up" did not come in my genetic package.

That said, I baked some killer oatmeal cookies yesterday. Check it out; it's at allrecipes.com and it's called Grandma's Oatmeal Cookies. Yum! Love that Kitchen Aid. We're having them for breakfast, actually. My little boys won't touch my oatmeal with brown sugar, butter and raisins, but they'll eat the exact same thing in cookie form. Go figure. And I'm all out of breakfast cereal and bagels so it's really all I have that they'll eat.

The Spelling Bee was lots of fun yesterday and my kids surprised me. Even my preschooler boys participated and they knew almost all their colors and letters! I was surprised. The girls spelled much better than I expected, considering I haven't focused on spelling in a while. It was a "kinder, gentler" spelling bee in that mistakes were not trumpeted and winners were not announced until the end. We left early, however.

Then our three little friends came to stay while their mom went to the doctor, so I had a house full for a while. But they are good kids. We had lunch, baked the cookies, watched a couple of videos, and then they studied their AWANA. When their mom came back, she took my big girls with them to AWANA. I put the little ones to bed early (heaven!--J.D. was a bit of a pill all day) and went to pick up the girls at her house later that night. I went to bed at 10:30 last night, right after reading a chapter of LOTR: Two Towers to Anna Kate (Olivia conked out). That's early for me!

Things are heating up at DH's job and he has to produce two major reports by Monday. These are usually done by committee and just one can take months to compile. I'm not sure how he's going to pull it off. And I'm not sure what we'll be doing next year, or whether he'll still be employed. Sigh. The sad thing is, this weekend is Elias's fifth birthday and 1) DH is working, and 2) things are tight again. Drat! I really wanted to do his fifth birthday up big. Looks like a fishing trip is out of the question this weekend. Maybe they can at least go to the pond. I know my mom could come over Sunday for a birthday meal, cake, and a couple of presents.

Or, once DH finshes, he could take Monday off and maybe we can go to the zoo, or something.

Well, love y'all bunches! Off to start the day.

Love,

Susannah

jennye's picture

Anne, enjoy the mountains? Are you headed off to Cloudcroft? This summer we may have to meet there!

Jamie Lea, Chance would have been doing the rebel yell, if he hadn't of fallen asleep! He does it whenever we go up a hill (there are 3 of them in Portales and Clovis. LOL!). Glad the police got the strangers in the yard! After all that's going on in P-ville the past week, even we are locking our doors at night (even though they caught the guys). If you have no idea what I'm talking about, check out our paper at www.pntonline.com

Susannah, we seldom have big birthdays. We mainly just have a theme. Like, one year Ch'ree got a Scooby-Do cake, Scooby stuffed animal, and took her to the Scooby movie. The inlaws come over, and we have a cook out. I think Pizza Hut has a deal with cake, balloons, personal pan pizzas and drinks for 10 kids for $35.

Speaking of Pizza Slut, I'm meeting a friend for lunch there today. Also need to run a couple errands for DH for Lions club, and I have a sudden desire to sew some quilt tops, but I don't have enough whites, so going to Walmart. Also need to fill my prenatel vitamins (they are chewables. I can't handle those horse pills).

I think I figured out how to tell my dad. I'm going to let Shelby tell him! Surely he can't be mean to his granddaughter, and then the initial shock will have worn off a little when I get the phone! LOL!

I got the tumbleweeds done by the scale house yesterday. I think I'm going to start on the rent house next, or just east of my house. Maybe not today, though. Its too hard to do AND watch Chance. With the temps hitting 70, I sure hate a snake to sneak out and get him!

Need to do my news for the paper, then I better get dressed.

Shaun's picture

I thought I had lined up a sitter for this morning, but she didn't show. Turns out she didn't yet get that I wanted a regular weekly things, despite my spelling it out in the job posting, discussing it with her on the phone, in person, etc. She's already rescheduled on me once, claiming that her professor didn't tell her until the night before that she would have a student teaching practice the next morning. Hmmm . . . Ah, youth.

So I'll mainly be working for the rest of the day.

Susannah, cooking is my last stand as a homemaker. I can't clean, I yell, sometimes I look like hell, but dammit I'm going to feed these people well! I'm sure everyone has their "one thing" and that's mine. Getting take-out or eating out when we haven't planned it always makes me feel like I've failed a little bit, so I try to avoid it. (I do love take out or eating out on purpose!)

Tonight I think it will be cod and potatoes with B. sprouts. Or I may save that for tomorrow b/c I want to pick up some Irish soda bread at the bakery too.

And if you'd tasted my mother's cooking, you'd wonder why I was not genetically blessed to cook much better -- she is amazing! (Funny what a little cream, butter, and oil can do for a dish . . .)

OK. will check back in on each of you later!

Fried Chicken!

Shaun's picture

Andrea and Anne, KFC is what I'd really like to be eating!

I don't want to get into the ins and outs of how we decide what our family should eat, because I would hate anyone to think that we are trying to prescribe the "right" diet for everyone, but we did start eating fish regularly a year or two ago. The big excitement (tho less exciting than I had hoped) is that we are experimenting with other organic, hormone-free, free-range, yadda yadda yadda meats. Now that they are easily available and somewhat more affordable to us, we are trying out having them as a special treat once a week. Or what we thought would be a special treat. We made roast chicken a couple of weeks ago and I thought the carrots were the best part! I am very spoiled from eating very flavorful veggies and fruits and lots of ethnic spices, so roast chicken is just kind of blah.

Fried Chicken on the other hand . . .

One week that will be our "meat treat"!!

But for tonight we ended up with Broccoli Fettucine, and I made DH cook it! (Part of leadership is good delegating! Laughing out loud )

Friday, and now I'm getting sick! DH was all achy and stuffed up yesterday, came in early about 5 for the night. Go away! I managed not to get sick the last time they came thru, maybe it'll do the same this time.

Anne, we will meet this summer! We have a family reunion in Mayhill, we can meet in Cloudcroft!

Jamie Lea, do you remember that episode of Friends when they were reading a book about stealing ones wind or something like that. That book you are reading reminded me of that! LOL!

Mmmmm, KFC sounds GOOOOOD!

Susan, now I KNOW your house looks like the pages of Southern Living!!

Yes, P-ville seems to be a bit dangerous the past week or so. My inlaws knew the old couple that was murdered, will be going to the funeral today.

Andrea, yay on the table! Too bad the floor isn't in yet.
I have much to do today. Laundry is number one on the list. DH announced he doesn't have time to help me burn the garden, so I'm just going to chop down all the weeds and throw them over the fence, then till in the rest. AFter I get FIL to fix the tiller if I can't. I know DH is busy and worried, so I don't want to bother him with it.

Bought some light and white fabric yesterday, need to wash those and see what quilts I want to make next. Ya'll have a great day!

Hello!

Susannah's picture

Skimmed, and the mere mention of KFC made my mouth water. Although I don't fry chicken (I hate frying foods); I usually buy 8 pieces for 4.99 at the local grocery store. Mmmmm. Wish I had some right now.

Shaun, even the best cooks need a break sometimes. No guilt! Smiling

I found a roast sticky chicken recipe we've done a couple of times that was really good. Rub it with a spice rub (paprika, salt, cayenne pepper, white pepper, black pepper, thyme, onion powder, garlic powder, and maybe a few others I'm forgetting) inside & out. Pop it in a plastic baggie and refrigerate overnight. Next day, stuff it with chopped onions, roast it at 250 degrees for 5 hours, with occasional basting. Take it out & let it rest for 15 min. It turns out perfect every time. It's a good Sunday dinner 'cause it can be roasting while we're at church. And the gravy it makes is to die for! I found it on an OAMC site. I guess you can do the spice rub and freeze the chicken at that point.

Okay, OT; I needed to start a "chicken" thread or something.

I have lots to do and I'm putting it off. But I will get to it today. First, a quick round robin and restart the laundry. Then, clean up kitchen a bit and have a bite to eat. Then, homeschool. Then, rake (if it doesn't rain).

So that's my PODA.

Love y'all! I sure hope you don't get sick, Jenny. Drink lots of OJ.

Andrea's picture

I'm done with taxes - yay! We ended up owing 236.00 when all was said and done. Not too bad I guess. Heidi, I think I took all the deductions I can!

Hi Jana - love to hear what you've been up to.

I'm off for a quick snooze before DD gets of the bus.

I'm intrigued

-- by the chicken recipe, Susannah. I am trying a Bon Appetit recipe this week, where you rub a butter mixed with garlic, parsley, and lemon peel under the skin and over before roasting. Not sure how long it cooks. But I would like to try yours too! The gravy is the best part.

And the words "fried chicken" have always made my mouth water since I was a young girl -- must be the Cracker in me!

Jamielea, I think I have a friend who has listened to that tape -- she and her boys say "Doooooonnnnnn't . . . stealmyjoy." It is cute the way they do it.

Congrats on taxes Andrea! That is coming up for me on my "vacation" in april.

Not a lot of housework yet today.

What a Week!

Vonnie's picture

Feels like I've been AWOL for a month! It has been a hectic, stressful, busy week at work for me. And next week proves to be the same or worse. But, home is pretty good right now. Creditors are getting their payoff checks and things are looking up for us.

We're looking forward to the weekend. I hope everyone has a great one!

Vonnie

I have a brown thumb for yard sales

Shaun's picture

All I ever pick up is duds. I think I am totally overwhelmed by the cluttery-ness of the presentation and I literally can't see the good stuff.

Cod was delicious, thanks. Tried to cut back on the amount of butter called for in the recipe, which worked fine. After the kids went to bed we had Pomegranate Martinis! (Kind of like a Cosmo but sweeter.)

Mainly working today, but did some limited homemaking:
drying towels
washing sheets

Took the girls to the MegaMall so DH could take DD5 on the roller coaster a couple of times. Had a latte and browed the kids section of Barnes and Noble too. (Got a new Droon book for DD5 and "The Golden Egg" for DD1.)

Speaking of kids books and "spring," (in quotes b/c of the unspringlike weather), I have to mention two of my very favorites: The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes (a must!) and The Bunny Who Found Easter. If you see these old classics while yard saling scoop them up!

PODA
make roast chicken and veggies
run out for pour-a-quiche for brunch tomorrow (shame on me, I know, but I do not have time to make the promised egg dish)
finish current laundry loads
put away clean clothes
load DW

Perhaps we'll watch a movie tonight, though I'm thinking backgammon would go better with another round of martinis! Smiling

Hope everyone not checking in today is having a wonderful weekend!

I'm not pushing it today, that's probably about it. Sickies are still lingering and I'm just feeling really lazy. Dad took the news pretty good, I'm shocked!

susannah, I watched all the news this morning going down with my mom (hey, that's pretty close to watching something together when your 1,300 miles away!). Glad they got the guy. Though I was surprised when my sweet little Gram was disappointed that they didn't shoot the bastard! LOL!

Did you have Shelby tell him?

Becky's picture

I'm having a lazy day here too. I made some iced tea for DH and watched some Monty Python DVDs. Oh, and I put a chicken carcass in the crockpot to make broth for chicken and dumplings tonight. And went grocery shopping. Maybe it wasn't such a lazy day after all! Still need to wash some dishes though.

Fun day had!

Vonnie, Shaun, I hope things become more peaceful for you soon.

Anne-crocuses!? Not Fair! Those are a good 6 weeks off for us unless a miracle occurs. Sad

Susannah, I've made that chicken and it is excellent! Really, really good. Maybe I'll make that Sunday.

Jo, so do we!!! We are not as far north as you are, but it is still really wintery here. I can't remember a winter so bad and we've been her 13 years! I am so ready for spring - we do have tulip and crocus sprouts coming up but they are covered with snow. They always seem to survive it. OK, gotta try the chicken now, still can't believe the 5 hours though.

Vonnie, we missed you - hope you get some downtime soon.

You too Shaun, sounds like you guys have been very busy. How was the cod?

I made spinach linguine with scallops, parmesan, garlic, & olive oil tonite - the kids had grapes and we had brussels sprouts. It was good but not great - the scallops were frozen. I refuse to pay 13.00 a pound for fresh, though they are to die for.

Hope everyone has a really nice weekend!

Windy today

Susannah's picture

Leaves blowing everywhere, but I did manage to get a few piles raked up. Hope to be done with the front yard by month's end. PODA pretty much TA DA'd, except not much on the housecleaning front.

Vonnie! Howdy! Maybe things will settle down soon and we'll hear more from you.

Bad stuff going down in Atlanta.

That recipe is really good. Here are the spice rub proportions:

Recipe By :Lynn Nelson- FA mailing list/Busy Cooks website
Serving Size : 4 Preparation Time :0:15
Categories : Chicken

4 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons paprika
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon thyme
1 teaspoon white pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 large roasting chicken -- as big as possible
1 cup onion -- chopped

You just have to remember to prep it the night before. Mmmm good! Kinda reminds me of Leanne's garlic lime chicken with the spices.

DH is bummed because Chad Reed beat Carmichael at SX tonight. He's pretty caught up in this stuff!

So, anyhow, I hope to sneak out and yard sale for a short time in the morning. Then DH wants to go out and hunt a birthday present for soon-to-be five-year-old. Personally, I think a pack of Play-Doh would be sufficient to thrill him and it's about all our budget can manage. I will be devoting my time to cleaning house and yet more raking/rock & weed removal tomorrow. Here's hoping for warmer weather for my northern friends. It's chilly here, but nice wind for flying kites. Maybe I can drag ours out tomorrow.

Well, DH is done gone nuts about an Alison Krauss and US song (actually, Dan Tyminski on lead vocal) and it's about all he's been playing tonight! Major breakthrough in genres, that. This is sometime Eminem/metal listener we're talking about. Me, I'm a folkie.

Love y'all!

Out of money, problems with auto insurance, and what was intended to be a chocolate dinosaur birthday "cake" is a pile of crumbs on the kitchen counter. It's 11 p.m. and I have no cake for my little boy tomorrow. Also, I've got laundry piled up waiting to be folded and ironed, and no time to do it.

So, anyways, I searched allrecipes and found a yellow cake recipe I can (I hope) bake as a 9x13 tonight. I used up all my baker's chocolate. Canned frosting's cheap, I'll pick one up tomorrow. (Slap out of powdered sugar after this disaster). My mom's coming over after church, so that should perk me up. I've got all the stuff for the beef stew, anyway.

Off to the galley again. I'll probably be up half the night.

Love y'all,

Susannah

Bye-bye, quadruple post!

Well,

Susannah's picture

I yard saled, but also discovered a problem with the checking account. Sad

I did find quite a few things that will suffice as birthday presents for my boy though. Smiling Found some nice Lauri puzzles that I will wrap up for him (.50 apiece!!), a little toy tool kit still in package, and a dinosaur book. Also picked up a few trinkets and nice books for their Easter baskets, as well as some homeschooling stuff. Our former pastor and his wife were having a yard sale at their new church. She's a teacher and always has good stuff. I got some tangram cards and I've wanted something like that for a long time. Smiling Also, saw some friends there I hadn't seen in a while.

Got home, flew the kite for a while with birthday boy. Typical March day here, windy but getting warmer.

Just ate something for the first time today and I'm just sitting here letting the food work on me so I'll feel less tired. Need to get lunch for kiddos, then apply myself to some housework.

Love,

Susannah

Oh yeah, P.S., I have to bake a cake for Birthday Boy too! Can't forget about that. Whew.

Hi Susannah! Hope you were able to yard sale today. Anything good?

Andrea-you could probably substitute shrimp for the scallops and it would be a little less expensive. Sounds good, though.

Hi All

DH is back inside so better make more hot coffee......

Yes Heidi, shrimp would've been better! I don't think I"ll get those scallops again. Those snowman kits are cute!

Thanks for the recipe Susannah! HOpe DS has a nice bday.

Good Morning

Vonnie's picture

I hope everyone is having a wonderful day where you are. It is a gorgeous, sunny morning here. I think we're due for rain this evening, though. I am actually sitting here, ready for church. DH is in the shower & when he gets out, I'll finish DD's hair (hers does better when it dries by itself for a bit). I also need to make up our bed.

PODA:

* Sunday School & church
* Take FIL to lunch b/c MIL is serving at the Widow's Luncheon
* Finish laundry
* Go to grocery store
* Work on office work (I have a deadline for tomorrow that I am not going to meet. Power is out at my office for workers & the server was powered down, so I can't connect from home nor can I work there.)
* Organize my calendar for the week
* Choir practice at 4:30
* Pick out clothes for the week & press if needed

Well, I'd better get moving. Need to go make up bed so I can do DD's hair. "See" you all later!

table

Andrea's picture

Hi guys!

Well, DH put our table up yesterday. It looks great though there are a few "dings" on it. Going to try to cover with scratch cover. The price was so good I'm not going to complain.

Sorry about the cake fiasco Susannah - bummer.

Have a great Sunday everyone.

Andrea

Too sleepy for martinis

Shaun's picture

Passed out last night while putting the girls to bed. DD5 always says "Lay with me for just a minute," and I usually have to say no so I indulged her and before you know it I was out cold!

Susannah, sorry about the cake, et al. Sounds like you're feeling a bit overwhelmed at the moment. I'm sure your DS will have a great day anyway. Smiling

We had after-church brunch with some friends, which was nice. We are hoping to get something going for families with young children in our parish, some kind of social/community-building network. DD5 got to play with some new girls from church and had a super time. No pizza from the pastor, though, Anne! (I think our parish priest is one of those that has to have a vow of poverty, though I'm not sure.)

Still chipping away at the laundry pile. Somehow in the last few months we seem to have started using more clothes! I think we must have a new roommate hiding in a closet somewhere, because I am not sure how the laundry level could have gone up so dramatically otherwise.

Enjoy your new table, Andrea!

Happy weekend to everyone else. I'm back to the salt mines with freelancing. Oh sweet vacation (in april) how I long for thee!

Laughing out loud Wouldn't survive the shipping, I don't think, and has to be frozen too. Oh well, someday if we have enough $ to buy real containers and a canner...

I am so sleepy today. I will really try to get to bed by 8:00 and hope for an energetic day tomorrow. I have four crock-pot meals planned for this week! Smiling Wonder how many days I'll forget to put them in in the morning? Laughing out loud Remind me to do it at night ladies!

Andrea's picture

OH that dinner sounds good Jo! Not sure what we are having.

Shaun, I have done that exact same thing with my kids. It shows how tired we are I think! Maybe you can have your martini tonite.

Hi Vonnie, darn the power is out at work! Eye-wink You will probably have to make up for it later though!

I'm going to try to do some scrapping now.

Andrea

Yup, Darn Power!!!

Vonnie's picture

Well, I was able to do the hardest part of it this afternoon, anyway. My Mom is going to switch her day and pick up DD tomorrow so I can finish it before I leave. I should be done by noon or so. So, I should still have a little time before DD comes back home.

I'm working on laundry now. Need to put a load in dryer & another in washer. Didn't get to grocery yet. I NEED to do it tonight, though. I have choir practice in 45 minutes & I forgot I have nursery duty tonight. No ducking out of church tonight! That's why I went ahead and did office work this afternoon.

It is a truly gorgeous afternoon! Don't know what happened to the rain. I need to check weather.com and see what the forecast is for the rest of the week so I can at least pick out our clothes.

Y'all have a great evening!

Busy day with church, lunch, dropped DS13 at the hotel for the united nations re-enactment.

Flower arrangement is ready, will be picking it up tomorrow. I may try and figure how to post pictures and let you all see my new dining room and last years kitchen project.

Not much flying on Sundays. Have to go and do my bible study lesson for tonites small group.

take care,

another lazy day

Becky's picture

But hey, it's the weekend.

Anne, mm pizza. Good stuff. Especially being taken out for it!

I hope the yellow cake turned out all right, Susannah. Did you put chocolate frosting on it? Chocolate frosting makes everything better.

How'd rehearsal go, Vonnie?

Andrea, I think pre-dinged furniture is great because you don't have to be careful with it.

Jo, I have some Canadian maple syrup in the fridge. I think I might make pancakes tomorrow for breakfast, since you've inspired me!

I hope you can post pictures of the flower arrangement, Susan!

TADA:

-um... I think that's it. I might do some laundry tonight, but I might leave it for tomorrow instead! Not sure yet.

shoot, I didn't even get to see a dr! Too early for heartbeat anyway, I'm just 5 weeks along. Didn't pee in a cup, didn't give Dracula anything, didn't even get my bloodpressure checked. All I did was sign a few forms. One was a decline for HIV testing and decline for some other test, and acknowledgement that I received info on getting tubes tied and that I know that there are two new nurse practitioners that may give me check ups, but will not deliver the baby. How exciting can all that be? LOL!

We checked out Country Bunny a long while back and I loved it. I'd love to get a copy of my own! I keep my eyes peeled for classics like those. I got *A Story About Ping* for 10 cents at a yard sale.
