Is it your auction or someone else's? I would think it would be far more sensible to apply for student loans rather than depend on the kindness of strangers. If I understand correctly you cannot be turned down for a student loan and the interest is far less than 10%, plus you do not have to begin paying on the loan (just the interest) until you graduate. The loans that are subsidized by the federal government are nice because you do not even pay the interest until you graduate, in fact I think the govt does instead! I just don't understand asking strangers to trust that they will receive their money back.

Another option is to check out scholarships. So many students just ignore them and they may only require you to write a paper on your interest in receiving the scholarship. Really, if a person is willing to send out personal information about themselves for as little as $10 why not spend a little extra time and effort to research scholarships instead?

Personally, I barely trust auctions as it is. Now if a graduating adult student were to auction off hints and tips for attending college while raising a family I may be willing to shell out some dough for it. Honestly though I know how little spare time one has in that situation and I wouldn't spread myself too thin in offering a subscription type service or excessive correspondence while attending university.

Anyhow, I wish good luck to the returning student. It takes a lot of guts to return after 14 years and if one is so inclined their success is well assured. ~Tiffany

I'm going with a bit off

My understanding is that this person has applied for loans but is still waiting for it to come in, so there is a delay between when the money is needed and when it would come.

There's nothing wrong with asking for help, but I would think the first step would be to ask for help from people you actually know, like family or an employer. We did one get an advance from my husband's employer, and when buying a car we got an interim loan from family until the money we were expecting (the settlement from my grandmother's estate) actually arrived.

Nothing wrong with helping strangers too , but I often think it's a bit presumptous to think that being aggressive and clever are good enough reasons to ask for money. I get that vibe from online bids for financial assistance (this isn't the first one I've heard about.)

I agree with Shaun. Also, ho

I agree with Shaun. Also, how do you know that a stranger is actually asking for the reasons stated? Anyone can lie.

Have you met with the financi

Have you met with the financial aid department? If you lay it all out on the table they may have some ideas for you. I would hate to have to wait an entire year, too. I had gotten the idea that you were waiting on grants not loans. Also ask about the college's payment plans and exactly when you must pay the total due for your classes. Often if you are waiting for grants and loans to come in they will understand. They deal with these things everyday.

I am surprised that you already have your books. If you are going to wait you should seriously consider returning you books asap. I found that the longer you wait to trade in textbooks the less money you will receive on them. It also seems that every professor uses a different textbook to teach the same subject and even the same professor may require an updated text each year.

Good luck with whatever decision you make. ~Tiffany

You'll make it!

I can appreciate your situation. I know I am a person who likes to exhaust every possible option, and even some impossible ones!, before changing my plans. But if something makes you uncomfortable in your gut, then you know it's not right for you anyway.

Tiff has good suggestions - maybe you have already tried them but if not it sure can't hurt!

Good luck!

OK time to fess up...

It's mine. I'm really in desparate straights here. This was a middle of the night, last ditch effort before the deadline. I kind of have the same feeling as all of you about these types of things, but I am so stuck.

I know I am probably going to have to wait a quarter to go back, but it puts my degree a year off because the program is sequential.

It's really all about finally making a decision and having a direction, and I'm ready to go NOW. Want to get started ASAP and get it done. I don't trust myself to have the same drive if I have to wait. Plus I am really impatient.

Thanks for your honesty, guys. I never felt quite "right" about doing it in the first place, which is why I put it out for comment. I think I'll take it down, put my books away, and have a little patience.

Thanks again

Nicole
