What'cha Studying?
Well, we used to have the "College Mom's" thread on the old site, but that name's not gonna work for the bunch of us who are in school right now...any good names, anyone?
Here's my schedule for this semester:
Monday-Wednesday:
"China" (2 credits hours) ...this is the last of my General Ed. World Civ. requirements.
"Introduction to Interior Design" (3 hours)
"Content Literacy in Secondary Education" (3 hours)
Monday Evening:
"Professional Issues in Education" (3 hours)
Tuesday Evenings:
"Human Sexuality" (3 hours)
This is my last full semester of classes! This summer I have to take "Teaching and Learning Strategies in Career-Technical Education" and "Professional Presentations." I'll do my student teaching next fall and graduate in December with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Family and Consumer Sciences Education, certified for grades 4-adult in FCS Ed. and in vocational/career-tech Child Development/Child Care. I'll also have minors in both Child Development and Family Development. Impressed yet???
So....what'cha studying??????

no sex classes
Too bad. Oh well.
Monday:
Aesthetics of the Avant-Garde [in music] 1945-present
Survey of music after 1900
Thursday:
18th century dance music
Also Mondays and Wednesdays I have to TA a Music and Shakespeare class, which is a lot of work to keep up in since I don't actually know any more than the students do.
I'm jealous!
Well, I'm not in school anymore, and I wish I were, but at least I get to study all the time as part of my work.
So right now I'm working on Schopenhauer (a 19th-century philosopher). I'm really digging it, not so much because of his specific philosophy (a lot about the Will as the primary life force; Becky, look for him when you talk about Wagner!) but because I am so interested in epistemology, or the criteria and limits for what we call "knowledge." Love it!

well.........
TV Class on Wednesday mornings 5-6 (yes, I record it!) Gov't
then on Thursday evening I have an Intro to Psychology class from 6-9.
I had to get going this semester but I am taking alittle at a time until I am tuition exempt, which will be in Spring '06.
My plan is to take a bowling class this summer, something fun that will take care of a phys ed credit and then take 2 more classes Fall '05......then Spring '06 to buckle down!!!!!
I would like a degree in education with some interest in the early childhood developement stages. Since I am just in the begining stages and know it will take me awhile to get a degree I am TRYING to stay flexiable. But my first goal is to be a teacher and then build on that.

Whoohoo! No classes for me!
Whoohoo!
No classes for me! After taking 16 hours last semester, I found my true calling in life: to just be mom and wife. Besides, I have enough going on with the farm, the house, cheerleading coach, hobbies, and helping out the little that I do at the kids school. And maybe I'll get that one more little baby, if I can talk DH into paying for it. LOL!
Too Cool, everybody!
Yes, Lenora, I'm impressed--I always am with you!
My list is not nearly so meaty or important. I'm just auditing, but I really love it.
Last Fall I had "Beyond the Field", which was two classes clustered. Creative non-fiction writing about the natural world, with painting included throughout. It was technically 2 classes with 2 professors, but we met Thursday nights from 6-9:30. This class was through the Lifelong Learning Program at Westminster College (NOT the college where I work). I'm glad the Art is done, although I'd like to experiment a little more on my own.
Writing Professor loves me, and I got a pretty good kick out of him, too, so I asked him if he'd sign me into his Poetry Workshop this semester. I have to have permission for all my classes since I'm just auditing. This is a regular daytime class TR 3:40-5:10, so I have to squeeze my way out of work in order to attend. I think I'll post my chicken story for you someday soon--You'll love it. My professor wants me to send it for publication.
So, the poetry is a lot tougher, though. Half the battle is being in there with all those "kids". I love them in my office. I have a different perspective in class.
Also, on Thursday nights I'm taking Spanish I and II through the LLP. I'm dreadfully behind!
Goals?
To stay at the University part time, to quit the bookkeeping job, get a mindless second job so that my brain has enough capacity to keep taking as many writing classes as I can.
Looking forward to reading about all of your progress and discoveries!
Love, Jul
Headed into Mid-terms!
Well, next week hearalds the 6th week of this semester...ours are 15 weeks, plus finals week, so 5 weeks is 1/3. I had one "exam" already...in the only class I have that has more than 2 exams. I MUCH prefer three exams or four-counting-a-final. Just two exams seems to put more weight into each test and I like mine a little lighter! But all in all, I think the semester is going well.
I got a 98 on my first Interior Design presentation board...had to "design" a line of coordinating textiles (not "pick-out" ...acutally draw, color, and present!). Considering my lack of either background, and/or interest in ID as a career, I'm pretty darn happy with that. Interior Design (as opposed to "Interior Decorating," which is not the same thing at all) is a pretty rigorus and demanding educational track.
BIG NEWS I recieved a "Recognition of Excellence" for my scores on the "Principles of Teaching and Learning" Exam. That is the two-hour essay test that we have to pass in order to get our liscense. It was one of two exams I took in January, the other being the liscensing exam for my content area...I have to pass both to teach in Ohio...
Anyways, I was pretty confident I passed the content exam...but actually though I would have to retake the PTL exam...guess not!
The test is not about repeating information, but taking everything we have learned and then using it to answer questions based on scenarios and documents in case studies. It was pretty difficult, and I was still writing when the proctor called "time." My actual scores haven't come yet...I thought the certificate was that when I got it...the actual "numbers" are due any day now!
The Summer schedule is posted, although we don't register until next week...it's gonna be miserable.
I have 10 weeks (two classes) of school starting directly after finals and have class on Tuesday and Tursday nights from 5-9 pm. DOESN'T THAT JUST STINK????? But they are my last two "classroom" classes as an undergrad, so I'm not gonna fuss too much. They will include current teachers who need the courses for certification in FCS, which is why they're offered only at night.
I hope all is going well for the rest of you...I saw where Jana was procrastinating on some homework.......Don't you know better than that, Jana???
<-- procrastinating on an assignment right now, too!

Blessings,
Lenora

still dreadfully behind!
We had our second big Spanish test last night, and I got a C on both of them. I'm not used to getting Cs, so part of me is mortified, but then when I realize that I have spent exactly zero time on this class outside of attending, I guess that's pretty darn good. Made my classmates laugh in the stairwell after last night's test, when I resolved that I would start studying when we begin Spanish II next week!
Poetry is going much better. I still don't entirely fit in, but things are getting more and more relaxed. I guess the "kids" are getting used to having me around. The reading is OK--I'm actually starting to see more of what's there--but it's the writing that I really look forward to.
Voice lessons are going well when we actually get to have one. Did I tell you the price was raised, so now I only take a half hour instead of a full hour? If I get more cashflow I'll go back to an hour. That was much better.
How is everyone else doing?

doing good
I have two midterms next week. Just kind of trying to keep my head above water.
B on my first Government exam so that is good!
Hanging in there. Trying to decide if I want to take a quick class in the summer or not.
Jana
Hello fellow students!
OK, I'm going to dip my toe in again! Hello to all my all homemaking buddies! Having a baby is so time consuming - I don't know how I'm going to manage to write up the PhD when I can't even manage to keep up with you guys. However, this thread is very pertinent because I HAVE to re-register for my PhD. This is next week's task. If I do nothing else this must get done. My supervisor will think that I've disappeared of the face of the earth. And you can have a baby and find time to study. Right?
Zillah
Hi Zillah!
Exciting to get an update from you! Hope you get in that writing groove soon.
Speaking of babies, mine is standing her with no diaper trying to climb up on me so I guess I should go.
PS way to go Lenora!
Shaun

Hi
Okay I don't belong here at all, as I'm studying precisely nothing, but congrats to you all! You're all doing so well!
And a big hi to Dr Zillah
Don't forget to come see me and DS sometime when you're up this way. How is DD? She must be huge now! Is she toddling?
Baby news
DB is well, and huge, but not toddling yet. Or even crawling. So we're all safe for a little while longer yet!!
Hi Zillah!
It's so good to see you! I'm sure that baby Sadie will be happy to help you with the paperwork of your PhD!
...especially if you leave any of it within reach!
I had two exams today...babk-to-back
I'm whupped!!! My second Interior Design project is due next Monday and we have an exam in that class in Wed. March 9, so that will be consuming me for the next week, I suppose.
I did get my student teaching application turned in last Friday: Essay completed and early. (Deadline tomorrow!)
Well done on the government exam, Jana. IMHO, summer classes are usually a bit easier. I have found them a pretty good investment...time-wise...it's also nice to NOT get out of good study habits and it always feels good to keep progressing toward your goal.
Honey, I bet you are actually studying quite a bit to keep DS and friends in engaging learning activities!
Blessings,
Lenora

hi Zillah!
When I was three and my mother was writing her M.A. thesis, she used to give me paper to scribble on while she wrote. So she would work at the dining room table, and I would "work" on the floor next to her.
I have to hand in a CV to an art history prof to apply to take an art history class this summer. Not sure what to say.... For non-Americans, a CV in the US is much more elaborate than in the UK (what British people call a CV, we'd call a resume). Except that I am a first-year master's student and have nothing elaborate to put there! So I am puzzling over this and the deadline is tomorrow. Yikes.
The End is Near!
O-Kay, study friends! We're rolling along to the end of the semester....like a locomotive going down hill, for me! This is what I have left for the semester:
China: medium size paper (still reading the second novel), comprehensive final exam
)
Interior Design: Major Presentation: 3 boards and a binder(in progress), Completed workbook (almost done!) and exam (not comprehensive).
Content Reading in Secondary Education: Reflection paper(first draft done), test, comprehensive exam.
Professional Issues in Education Group project(in progress), big paper(rough outline working) (no exam)
Human Sexuality one test, comprehensive exam (practical application experiments at every opportunity!
This is the most comprehensive exams I've had in one semester since I've been in school.
I'm registered for summer and for student teaching in the fall! I have an appointment today at 12:30 at the school that was my first preference for student teaching...with the teacher who would be my cooperating teacher. Pretty cool!
Also, I'm being inducted on Sunday into Alpha Sigma Lambda, which is the national, academic honorary for "Adult Learners." The University of Akron has about 8500 non-traditional students ("old"
) and they offer membership in this organization to only the top 100 students each year. It's quite an honor and I am very proud to be included!
I'm off to get ready for my "interview!"
Hang in there, everyone!
Blessings,
Lenora
Congratulations Lenora
Well done! Is there anything you're not good at? I just console myself with the fact that you smoke, as that seems to be your only flaw
Been sailing so I missed this!
Hope your interview and induction went well
Zillah
I am almost done with my first "adult learning" semester.
While I am so looking forward to be done, I am proud of myself for hanging in there and actually making make B's in both. I am not taking anything this summer. Will just spend the summer with the boys and enjoy the the time together. But will take 2 classes next semester.

Schopenhauer and Wagner
Actually we're talking about that in the 20th-century survey course b/c of their continued influence in the early 20th century. Especially on Debussy.
