What's on your needles right now?

I'm doing a ribbed scarf for my Mom out of Bernat Galaxy yarn, which is very pretty but difficult for me to knit with because it has all these little bumpy pieces of fuzz in it. I think it will turn out very nice though. I have been doing lots of dishcloths lately too for Christmas gifts, I need to make me a couple after I finish this scarf.

I'd also like to get some circular needles and a good hat pattern and give that a try soon. And wool soakers. Oh and felted moccasins! Oh I could knit all day long and everything would just fall in around me! Sigh- one project at a time... Smiling

Funny you should ask ...

I'm making a scarf using Light and Lofty in Sage Green. The texture speaks for itself, so I'm just using a simple garter stitch.
It's a sensual treat to work with this yarn .. so soft and soothing. I believe Lynn would call this "fiber therapy."

how funny you started this thread..

No pun intended.. Laughing out loud
I had three hours to myself today, and I picked up my crochet basket, and started on a 1/2 finished blanket. I hadn't done anything on it in over a year and half....my shoulder is a bit sore, but look forward to getting back into it...the new yarns out there are just to beautiful not to be doing something with it!!
Fiber therapy!! Smiling

On my needles

Submitted by Lynn on Sun, 01/02/2005 - 7:49pm.

I feel compelled to say first that I finished a sweater for Louisa today. I finished knitting it on the 30th and I am counting it toward 2004 rather than 2005. (I don't have an actual total; I'm going to keep track this year.) It turned out pretty cute, though if I were to make it again I'd use smaller needles. I used 9s and Encore is really better suited for 7s.

Yesterday I did the calculations and cast on a yoke sweater for Josie in some vintage orange wool from the 70s that I'll be doing some contrast pattern work in some handspun; the handspun is reds, oranges, golds and pinks. I'm going to use a mosaic pattern that makes little dancing people around the yoke. Smiling

I'm also plotting out what yarns to use for a version of this tea cozy. I don't have Kureyon; I'm going to use up a motley collection of bits of light bulky handspun.

I also have plans to make a new pi shawl out of three natural colors of Romney I'm spinning in the grease--white, gray and dark gray/near black. I'm finding I really like wearing shawls pinned behind my back to make a sort of shrug and I have only one big pi shawl that's getting a bit ratty. I keep finding Josie draped in it dragging it across the floor.

the sweaters that never end

Submitted by Shaun on Mon, 01/03/2005 - 11:19am.

I have a baby sweater on circular needles (easy top down one piece cardigan) in this muted green wavy yarn (has a kind of chenille look when knitted) and one on deck in a tweedy brown. But I'm stuck -- the sweater has been abandoned for months, and the baby is soon to outgrow it! I really need to get with a friend and have them help me get over the hump: getting out of the first sleeve and continuing on.

As you can see, I am a very novice knitter!

and also!

Those of you in the Portland area, I need two more students for my Your Sweater Your Way class which starts 1/11/05 (next Tuesday). We'll be knitting a yoke sweater like the one I'm making Josie (sans little dancing people)--except you can choose any yarn, any gauge and any size. We just need two measurements, the length from hem to shoulder and the widest chest measurement. We're calculating out the pattern as we go. Once you've done it you'll be able to make a yoke sweater for anyone in any yarn--it's really easy, I promise!

I'd love to, but...

Submitted by Anhata on Mon, 01/03/2005 - 5:26pm.

I'd start off missing the first class. I'll be in California visiting my grandmother for her birthday that week. Would that be a problem? I'd miss all the explanatory stuff...

As for me,

Submitted by Anhata on Mon, 01/03/2005 - 5:41pm.

I have a pie wedge shawl on one pair of circular needles and am a little over 1/6th done with it, a Chemo Cap on another pair of circular needles that I'm almost done with just need to do the ribbing, and a very long list of things that I want to get on the needles very soon. Shall we start a thread on what we plan to get on needles this year?

I'd love to do something like that! I'm in GA though... I am thinking about doing an online class though- making wool soakers at Wooly Wonder. Ane I have been very pleased with the free downloads at Common Threads- thinking about getting a subscription over there. I have no-one IRl who knits to get any ideas or help from. I'm excited to see so many knitters here though!

a scarf

Submitted by Becky on Tue, 01/04/2005 - 6:50am.

Purple, an ordinary ol' scarf in an ordinary ol' garter stitch (I just wanted to showcase the pretty color) with an ordinary ol' wool/ acrylic blend. Some very ordinary brand, I forget what and don't feel like going to look at the label. It's a birthday present for a young friend who will be thirteen next week.

Just learning to Knit

Submitted by Sherrie on Fri, 01/21/2005 - 1:49pm.

Hello, I am new here and teaching myself to knit. Right now I am knitting a kitty blanket on size 10 needles with left over yarn from a crochet project. Next off I will be learning to cable, again kitty blankets. I find that I am less intimidated with Kitty blankets because they don't really care if the stitches aren't even and the local humane society gets the benefit of the blankets. They send one home with every kitty adopted.

"The" Poncho

Submitted by silverbear on Wed, 03/23/2005 - 7:33am.

There's a fine line between hobby and obsession. I had a running start, and I hurdled that line like an Olympian.

When St. Martha of Nutley strolled out of prison on March 4th, I was captivated by the poncho she wore. I did a google search but couldn't find any poncho patterns which replicated the poncho.

A few days later, my sweet husband returned from a one year assignment in South Korea, and the poncho was forgotten.
Last week, while cleaning out the junk mail folder of my hotmail account, I spied an email from the Mary Maxim company announcing the arrival of the Martha poncho kit. It appears that I was not the only one obsessed intrigued by this new garment. Mary Maxim was deluged by requests for the pattern. So, too, was Lion Brand yarn.

Off to market I traipsed for four skeins of Lion Brand Homespun and a 9 mm crochet hook. A few hours of obsessive crafting later, and voila! I was part of the leading edge of a cultural phenomenon. Yes, I've already started to make another poncho. Stop looking at me like that.

Photographic evidence of my poncho obsession can be seen on my blog.

Intimidation!

Submitted by Vonnie on Thu, 03/24/2005 - 5:26am.

I am rather intimidated by everyone's abilities/knowledge here. I was inspired by Martha's poncho and decided to dig out my crochet hooks and yarn from eons ago. I never even made a single item previously! I'm a beginner's beginner, folks! But, a friend is bringing me a CD Rom tonight that teaches the basics. I want to make a little doll blanket for my DD. Really straightforward & simple. I have always wanted to crochet so I could make little hats and scarves. You all have inspired me!

Ease of crochet

Submitted by silverbear on Thu, 03/24/2005 - 5:45am.

The "Martha Poncho" only looks complicated. Basically, it's a big granny square, with only 2 corners instead of four.
I'm working on my 3rd right now. This one is for my mother-in-law. No, really, I swear it is!! Big grin

Great blog, too Smiling You've been keeping that very quiet! Smiling I'd start one myself if I could think of a good name for it (the blog, not the poncho. Now THAT would be going too far Big grin )

Still the same sweater...

Submitted by Sparrow on Tue, 03/29/2005 - 7:29pm.

...That I started in college, far too many years ago. I did put it down for a while to make two scarves. It's in a denim blue wool and it seems to be going in fits and starts. This is the first sweater I've attempted--it was supposed to be a challenge, and it has been! Maybe one of these years I'll actually finish it. Eye-wink

Works in Progress

Submitted by lgunnoe on Wed, 03/30/2005 - 6:06am.

Don't feel bad about having a "work-in-progress," Dara. If we started a thread where we listed all of our various started-but-not-finished projects....I bet everyone here would have at least one....and unless you were in college more than 10 years ago...I bet your sweater wouldn't be the oldest, either ! Eye-wink Personally, I have a cross stitch wall hanging that I started somewhere in the early nineties...still in the hoop...still not finished!
