Clutter Out - Organization In Jan 05
Submitted by Hope on Sat, 01/01/2005 - 8:28am
This is it, the first day of our renewed effort. Let's not waste any more of our lives living in chaos. There's much we can do to bring peace to our surroundings, and therefore, into our daily lives.
Let's grab 2005 by the horns and "just do it".

Huh?
Who had birthdays? Honey and Lenora? I went to the homepage, where the birthdays used to be listed and they aren't there anymore. Ok then, if anyone had a birthday
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!
This is it eh? The 1st day of 2005
. It's going to be a busy and life changing year for me. Suddenly it's only three months until I move. OMG
, where has the time gone. I have to get busy here, and get the painting done on this old house.
Today I'm working at moving more stuff out of my way, and starting to wash down walls and mouldings, getting them ready for paint.
I'm thinking I should color dot all the stuff I'm packing up for the move, so the movers will know which room to plunk those boxes in. That would be an organized thing to do don't you think. I need to put color dots on my shopping list. $$$ Stores are a great place to pickup those things.
It's time to make myself a cup of Joe and get on with this "new year".
Have a great one...New Year that is
.
birthdays
That's a feature that went by the boards. Stay tuned, it's due for a comeback sometime this year.

New thread
So glad to see the new thread started Hope. That old one was taking me forever and a day to load, then get to the last page.
I'm trying my best to turn loose of some items I know I will never use. Like you said, we need to get rid of the chaos in our lives. Looking at all this stuff just wears me out sometimes.
I have lots and lots of glassware (Tiara) from when my Mom used to sell it. She gave it to us kids as gifts, plus I bought a lot.
Also am trying to declutter my clothing. I need to get rid of several items I haven't worn in a long time. They're just taking up space.
I'm so glad to have this support group. It helps just to read along with what others are doing sometimes.
massive decluttering, more to come
Hey guys--
I did a bunch of decluttering before the new year. Cleared out all the wire hangers--where do they come from? Got rid of all my no-stick pans; we're moving to cast iron and never use them at all. Freed up a whole shelf. Cleared out a bunch of the girls' toys; they never even blinked/noticed. Got rid of a bunch of handmade clothes I've been holding on to because I made them. Gave the local knitting shop all my old knitting magazines and a couple of books; I can visit them since I'm there several times a week teaching or hanging out. Went through Lou's clothes and gave the too-small things to our little friend Tovah. Gave away a whole bunch of cheap shoes I never wore.
Big jobs before me: Destashing fabric. Organizing and destashing yarn. Getting rid of books I don't want/need. Setting up my basement fiber studio including my table loom. Getting rid of the mystery boxes of other people's stuff in my basement (from way back when we had roomies). Going through my clothes again. Going through the stuff from the dismantled hutch and finding homes for the stuff we want to keep. Decluttering and organizing the back porch, which is mostly John's mess but I can't stand another minute of it.

Gotta join in here too.......
I am on Fly pages for the day to day stuff but over here you need to keep me focused on my office. Ladies, it may take me six months to get it into shape but I WILL! I WILL! I WILL! And I will keep it that way!
Jana
Woo Hoo!
My favorite threads are gonna be jumping now!
Hi Jana! Office space is high on the TODO list here too. It was MIL's room for the past two years and must be completely repainted before we can even begin to think about doing anything with it. That's actually my project for week-after-this! Happily, since the computer and file cabinet have been in the bedroom for the past two years, we've really streamlined the "mess" that goes along with it! It gets chaotic at times, usually with my school work, but I manage to tame it quickly enough. Hopefully, since that room will need to double as a guest room, I'll keep as good a control on it there, too.
Oops, family calling for a game of Cranium Conga....must go!
Happy New Year, all!
Blessings,
Lenora

I'll catch up
tomorrow afternoon, when both kids are at school at the SAME time and DH isn't home to see they get there like he is today.
I have too many changes for a short post - big year for us!
Kerri.
"Organizing," huh?
As opposed to just decluttering? Geez, Hope, why'd you have to go and do that??? When we were decluttering, I felt pretty good...but "organized" too? GULP!
I spent some time with my mission statement....then ended up leaving it pretty much the same. It speaks to my authentic priorities, and those haven's changed. Some of the "details" have changed, though, so I'll be working on that list later...probably next week.
My Grand Plan for the first part of 2005 will wait until I get my course syllabii...so I can figure in exams, papers, and such.
I bought the stuff to give the front room a good scrubbing. I need to wash the walls, doors, woodwork, etc. before DH paints the ceiling. I'm off tomorrow to pick a wallpaper border and paint colors. I'd love to have all the painting done by next weekend.
My biggest blocks of time this week will be spent reviewing for my exams on Saturday...ugh! But other than that, we're back-to-school and back-to-work and back-to-normal on Tuesday (DDs go back to school tomorrow, but DH is off one more day).
I'll see you all tomorrow, at some point, I'm sure!
Goodnight, friends!

Good Morning!
Kiddos are off to school and the beds are made...it's a start! I need to do a bit of laundry (like the Sahara is a "bit" of sand
), grocery shopping, do my "Monday Sweep and Swipe," get ready for Scouts after school, and....um....oh, yeah! "Organize" something!
I have between now (9:00 am)and 2:00 this afternoon to manage all that....then dinner and some studying this evening. I'm going off right now to wash a bit in the front room...before I hop in the shower. I've got a load of cold-water-wash laundry sitting by my side ready to go down with me.
Have a great and "organized" day!
Blessings,
Lenora

Monday mind muddle
I need a list....fast!
I have so many to do's I could pick from. I'm just sitting here with my coffee, and all the tasks are just racing around in my head. Yes, I need to write these things down, as I have a couple of phone calls to make today that I *don't* want to forget about.
I had planned to make a city trip today, but it's -43C with the windchill so I've changed my mind about that. If I don't buy paint today it won't be the end of the world. I'm not going to whine about the bitter cold and the snow. I'm just thankful I don't have the amount of snow they have in northern California, and hey...I have not been attacked by a wall of water. I have a car, food in the fridge, and my furnace works. In the larger scheme I am very blessed.
In a minute here I'll make a list of calls to make and chores I can tackle here at home. I think I'll do a couple of big visual impact jobs first, that should motivate me. Easy task will be to move all but two of the diningroom chairs to the move pile in the basement. I doubt I'll be hosting any big dinner parties before we move, so why have them in the way when I'm trying to paint.
Online banking should get done and my pile of filing dealt with.
Dishes, laundry, bathroom spiffing, and all those other little jobs that Monday brings.
Lynn, thanks for the reminder about fabric stashes. I have an embarrassing collection of *bits of fabric*. For a decade I've collected it, washed it, color blocked it and stacked it neatly on shelves in my sewingroom. I wanted to learn applique work, but it's been years now and I've not gotten to it yet. I think I'll let it go now. It's hard though, I've cared for it for so long
.
Jana, you have done your desk before...you can do it again. Get your timer and do a little each night. You'll have it done in a week.
Lenora, I can't imagine that you're not already organized. You must have a good system going for you already I think. How else could you be *so* accomplised.
Fern, I was wondering how the several pages of thread were affecting people. Becky questioned about a week ago if the thread was getting too long. I don't do slow, but if some of you are suffering it then we should get a new thread going every week, or whenever we're in danger of going over two pages, whichever comes first.
What else....hhmmm....DH went back to work this morning. Life is back to normal
. I love the guy dearly, but he certainly gets underfoot. He did get alot of niggly repair chores done while he was home, but I did not. I get waaayyy unfocussed when I'm trying to do things with him around.
Christmas is OVER...the decorations could go now. It's time to make room for a fresh new year, new dreams, great adventures. You can't move forward if you've got one foot stuck in Christmas. You need both feet to walk. So enjoy the memories, and pack away the fluff.
Have a busy Monday all, and carve out a chunk of time to enjoy yourself. Maybe think about something nice you could do for the mind or body this week. A little pampering will help to re-charge the mind, body, and soul. Later all
.
I think someone is going to h
I think someone is going to have to give me a jump start around here. I've been totally useless for 2 days now. It has rained cats and dogs and I'm sick of it. The yard looks like a river. I slept off and on all day yesterday. The kids went back to school today. I dropped them off, went to check on my dad, came home and did what? Well, I took a stupid nap.
I need to go grocery shopping, but its like pulling teeth these days. I just get down to the dregs before I can muster up the gumption to get up and go. Anyone else dealing with the winter blahs?
My man has been underfoot for about 3 days now too, Hope. I know what you mean about being difficult to focus on doing anything. In addition, I've had 2 teenagers underfoot! I think they were as glad as I that school resumed today.
Speaking of extra pages slowing it down for some, I wonder what happened to the feature where you could click on the page # on the page where you first click on to a thread?
Amongst my sleepy time, I have managed to load the dishwasher and run a dust mop across part of the floor. I plan to do a little decluttering of boxes and packing paper when I get home from picking the kids up from school. Most of my moving boxes are in the garage awaiting a trip to the dump, I just need to add a few more to the pile.
Seems I'm having a good whine here, so I'm getting off for now.
Jumping back in, because
I have to do something about this house! I have spent far too long on jollification! It's been endless this year. I have only had one day since Christmas Eve when I wasn't invited somewhere.
The house is a complete wreck, I have about fifteen loads of laundry to do, a mountain of ironing and the Christmas decorations and tree still have to come down.
We are out visiting friends again tomorrow afternoon, but I hope to at least get some of the laundry done before we go. Hopefully I'll get some general tidying done in the evening, too. Every room needs it. Wednesday I am babysitting and Thursday I am out all day again - I just need a few days at home!
Motivation!
...seems to be thick around here! I got a great deal done yesterday! I scrubbed the entire fron room (and have the sore legs to prove it!) and picked out paint colors (shades of green) and a border. I'm buying the ceiling paint today..and maybe the rest of it, too.
The main floor is tidy. I got my kitchen counters bleached this morning, and did another load of laundry.
DD14 and I hit the grocery store after scouts, which finished a little early. I didn't get any studying done, but I have only a quick errand to run today then it's study-time until the kiddos get home!
Have a great day!
Blessings,
Lenora

Morning all
Honey, I will be direct and to the point(with a heart full of kindness and concern of course
). You are in charge, for the most part, of how you spend your time. If you want and need a few days of hometime then you have the power to make that happen. It all boils down to how badly you want it.
Fern, two teens and a DH underfoot??? I'd want to sleep my way through it too. Seriously though, if you are so tired you must need the extra rest. Listen to what your body wants. Need some light therapy maybe?
I'm a shut-in today, simply because it's too dang bitterly cold to go out. Dogs won't even come around today to rip the garbage open. I wonder if the garbage will even get picked up at all. If the temps are too low those garbage crews don't work.
I'm going to spend my morning in the office downstairs, seeing what I can get rid of and doing some filing and shredding.
I'm running out of space to pile up packed boxes, so I think I'll go through my entire craft area and see what I can de-junk. Then pack much of it up. I can't see myself doing any craft projects before we get moved, and the space can be better used to stack packed boxes.
Planning some spa time for myself this aft, and that should take care of my day. Life is good
.
maybe next week
just not really feeling like posting...
sorry guys! It's not even that I'm doing nothing, or doing so much I don't have time to talk. Just no ... mood really. Not even a bad mood or a blah mood, just a not posting mood.
be grateful - I spent two hours writing a counselling email to an old friend (of DH's originally!). Me not posting should be seen as a blessing at times - life's too short!
Kerri - with you in spirit... sorta...
Hi Kerri
We miss you when you go quiet
. I hope you're taking good care of yourself, and that your funk passes over soon. Does the disaster in your neck of the woods have anything to do with your mood? Mom still doing well??
I went to bed last night with my plan for today made. I *must* go into the city and make a few stops, check on house progress, and pickup some lights I ordered(the electrition will be bugging me for them soon), and get a gallon of paint I need for the weekend.
I got up this morning and it's -50C with the windchill. That's -58F for the non-metric thinkers. It must be the coldest morning so far this winter. Of course it is.....I'm going to town!!! I have 6 stops to make, and I think I'll just take my extra keys and leave the car running all day. Not very green of me, but hey.......I don't care today!!!!
I made some real progress in my office yesterday. Since I got this laptop last spring, I've spent almost no time down there, and was tossing paperwork in there in piles. Yikes! I still have a days worth of work to do in there. I had no idea how bad it was, and I have to laugh when I think back to yesterday morning, when I thought I'd be finished in about 3 hours. I'll work on the room more when I get back home.
I just can't think of anything else to post this morning. Do I need more coffee? I guess I do
. Later gals.
Morning
Nothing's going to happen here this morning other than the dishes, which I've already loaded.
I'm heading into town to play with Syd this morning while DIL takes Sophie for her 1 month checkup. Should make for a fun morning. I've been itching to play with the great smelling, sparkly play doh Syd got at Christmas
. I'm sooo child-like sometimes
.
My trip to town went well yesterday, I picked up the paint I need to start on mouldings, baseboards etc. I also picked up some under cabinet lighting I'd ordered for the new house. Took in two new home decor stores, one not great, but the other outstanding with reasonable prices. I did not buy anything, just wanted to check it out for future purchases.
When I get back home around noonish, I will head back to the office in the basement and put in a few hours of effort there. I have some more filing to do, and want to see what I can trash. I'm thinking at least 1/3 of what I have stashed and filed down there is garbage now.
Where's my laundry at....gee, I'm not sure....it's been a few days. I hope I didn't leave stuff in the washing machine. I'd better check on that.
Gotta run. See ya later.
I LOVE play doh!
Love the feel, love the smell, love everything about it!!!!!
I have a couple of errands to run, which I'm actually doing before I shower....it's too cold to go out "damp."
I've got to conquer the sock-basket today....I'm caught up on laundry (which only happens once in a great while)...so it's time for that dreaded chore. I HATE matching socks, which is why we have the sock-basket in the first place!
The DDs got their gift for Epiphany this morning...it's the "12th Day of Christmas!" I popped the few bits of decor that I still had up back in their crates and sent it all back to the basement. I went ahead and pulled up Valentine's Day (one small box and the front door wreath). My first weight-loss goal is set for Valentine's Day so I thought it might help me stay motivated!
O-Kay...I have to get out of here!
Have a great day, all!
Blessings,
Lenora

Started my morning off with a
Started my morning off with a trip to the grocery store for myself and my dad. I don't like shopping for one household, much less two. However, we had weather in the teens this morning (nothing like Hope's weather though) and didn't want the sitter to get my Dad out in it to go for groceries.
Will deliver Dad's stuff later today, so I put my stuff up and his refrigerated items, now I'm procrastinating because I know dishes are next on the agenda. Ugh!
DS is the typical 12 yr old boy. . .every shirt he has is under the bed, on the floor or hanging off the ceiling fan. Finding something clean for him to wear this morning was a chore. I'd been warning him he'd better get his dirty clothing to the laundry room. He didn't pay attention, but I have to say he didn't complain when I took him the only 3 shirts he had clean this morning and told him to choose one. . .he hates all 3 of them.
Hopefully I will get to a few more boxes today that I haven't unpacked from moving. Also need to get into my clothes and see what I have suitable for wearing to work since I'm going to work soon. I think it will suit me well these days since my kids are older and the hours can be arranged around my dropping them off and picking them up at school.
Off to scrub the stupid kitchen. And do the stupid laundry. And clean the stupid bathrooms. I'm in no mood for cleaning today. Can you tell?
I guess it's afternoon
Well, I just got up, so "Morning all"
.
Auntie and I had a late, miserable night, so I just went straight back to bed after DH headed to work this morning. It's now 1:30 and I have a long(stupid, thanx Fern
) to do list in front of me.
I've already got the laundry on the move, and made a call to the new house plumbers re: some changes they needed to be on top of.
Still to do
-empty dishwasher
-swish the bathroom
-finish laundry
-brown paper wrap and address a package for mailing
-phone SIL in British Columbia
-work in the office room
-wash railings and ready them for paint
-wash floors
-wash baseboards for painting
-find some paint DH needs to finish a basement project
-de-junk and do some packing in my craftroom
That's enough . No way I'll get it all done at this late point in the day. This is more like a next three days list.
Lenora, I think you might be the only person I know who decorates for Valentines Day.
Oh Fern, you're giving me flashbacks of teen boys bedrooms. I'm sure I didn't see DS's floor for 8 years.
I'd better go, I'm in a "state" today. I feel like throwing out anything that needs cleaning. Later gals.
decorating for Valentine's day
I do that, but not until February.
(I think Lenora UN-decorates for Valentine's Day actually.
)
Yup
I was thinking the same thing about Lenora
. I didn't say anything because I didn't want you all to start thinking I was obssessed with her antics.
You are right Becky... unless she has some special Valentines Day things for dolling herself up. Like heart shaped pasties or some such thing.
Lowering the tone
Oh, we're back to THAT kind of topic again are we??
Did I post to say the Christmas tree was down? Took it down finally, on the 5th. The same day I got rid of three bags and a box to charity.
I treated myself to 'Home Comforts' by Cheryl Mendelson recently. I've wanted it for a long time and to be honest, my finances are in such a mess after Christmas, I decided another £10 wouldn't make a lot of difference!
What a great book
It actually is making me feel like I want to do some spring cleaning or something
Valentines Day - one time, when I was about 20, I returned home from work to find a big bouquet of red roses on the doorstep. Didn't know who to thank, as I was dating two guys at the time
I had to wait and see if either of them mentioned it. One did, but sadly not the one I would have preferred them to be from
HE didn't even get me a card. Isn't that typical?
I need to get moving. I have two hours until we have to leave for DS13's maths lesson. I need to get showered and dressed and then either iron (the pile is gargantuan) or do some organising - my bedroom has descended into chaos over Christmas. I have new year goals of treating myself nicely for a change, so my room is NOT going to be the dumping ground it usually is, this year!
Have a nice day
Morning all
Honey, it helps to get the tree down I think. Staring at it post Christmas can really grind motivation to a halt. The Christmas decor is all very beautiful, but when it's put away the house somehow feels refreshed.
It's the weekend, so DH is home of course. He's still abed, but will putz at his fixup jobs when he wakes up.
I emptied the diningroom yesterday and washed it down so it's ready for paint.
This morning I'll go down to that office and do some stuff in there. DH wants to paint some shelves in that room so I'd better get my mess out of the way.
I see I could move more furniture out of my living room. It's not anything I'd be getting rid of, but could be piled up elsewhere until we're done painting/or move.
That's it then, being DH is home all my intentions could change with the wind, but for now I'll go with the above plan for this morning.
As glad as I am
to have taken the decorations down this year I have to say that our house doesn't look so much refreshed as more like we're getting ready to move out. I know, we are, but we're not getting rid of the house, and my SIL doesn't know we're moving out. And it shows up how badly the walls need painting too. I made that comment, but I've also made plenty about poor cash flow to stave off the painting until after we're gone. Don't want to end up paying for that as well as the sofas. I don't mind paying for those, particularly since it was our kids who did most of the damage, but I can't pay for everything, at least until I know we're getting it ready for sale. My SIL can follow her own suggestion and get a can of paint and do it herself when we're not in the way!
I hit a bit of a low on Friday after the undecorating, so I'm hoping I will get back up to speed again next week. I need to tackle it all cupboard by cupboard, rather than doing it randomly. At least when I took the decorations down I sorted out what we'll be taking with us. I also left a letter for my SIL in with some baubles which I hope will put her in a better mood next Christmas. I didn't make any comment on feelings because as I said, I couldn't guess what hers would be by then. I concentrated on detailing the decorations, what had been taken and what left behind, and asking that she try to get the family together for Christmas since everyone had such a good time this year. DH said it was very touching and it made him cry. Not sure if he was pulling my leg or not!
I gotta go... I've been shut up in my room most of the morning now, and it's nearly half ten!
Kerri.
I WILL be getting all the decorations
down and out today! And I WILL dejunk my mail basket!
That is all I can offer!
Happy Sunday!
Jana
Christmas decorations done but mail
basket not so great!
I did dejunk some *crap* that made it's way here but belonged to my mother or sister and I also dejunked some weeds in the front bed and lots of spots on my carpet!
Jana
Oh! Oh! Oh!
My mission of dejunking the office...I did something towards that today. Can't believe I forgot!
I had a stack of things that needed to be shredded. While I was visting my granny I made mention of it and she said she would do it if I brought it to her SOOOOOOO.......I dejunked a large bag of paper from the office floor!
YIIIPPPPEEE!
Hey, baby steps, right?
Jana
Delegation
is an important skill Jana! Probably made your granny feel useful too. How sweet of her to offer. And how sensible of you to take her up on it!
I found all of my desk yesterday - shocked my SIL - and then the kids seemed to take this as a signal that it was a good place to dump sticky art projects to dry. Let me tell you that glitter glue just doesn't dry in such large blobs!
I have written down every storage place in my entire bedroom (which is the place with most storage in the whole house) and I will go through each place one at a time. First I have to take a flamethrower to the kids' room though. I asked them nicely all last week. I bullied them and shouted at them and threatened them all weekend and now I've taken away their favourite soft toys, I'm going to do the job myself with scant respect for their junk and they'll get their soft toys back when they keep it reasonable. I'm trying to be more tolerant and accepting of them as I can be of other people, but Monday isn't the day to expect it of me, especially when even my Sunday looked like the Monday from hell!
so I have plenty planned. Have to dejunk some more half-rotten bananas into a banana cake for my MIL. I had to stop my FIL from throwing away the poor speckly bananas I'd been allowing to overripen, much to my MIL's amusement! I would've given her the one I made on Friday nigt, but by Saturday morning it had at least one slice off the end, and the last piecesgot eaten this morning. This is one very popular banana cake. www.mealsforyou.com and it's a banana and chocolate bread or something. My MIL isn't normally that keen on cake, and usually goes for plainer stuff (foam pieces as far as I can tell!) but she was most impressed with this one at Christmas! I wasn't even planning to serve it for them at Christmas.
how on earth did banana cake get on this thread??
Kerri.
