Loss in the family

We lost a member of our family today. Taps was played. Yes, it was a close member, been in our family for 8 years now.

We lost our pickup, affectionatly called "The Whore". She was a fun pickup to drive. A 1979 Ford F-250 4x4. May she rest in peace.

DH can spend no more long nights out with "the whore". No more sleeping with her, checking cows with her, four-wheeling with her. She has had a face lift, a body lift, new carpeting, engine overhaul. Now she is gone.

An unfortunate accident took her today. A fuel line leaked and caught the engine on fire just before DH and DS2 pulled her into the driveway after feeding cows. DH scooped up our son and ran to the semi truck for the fire extinguisher. But by the time he got back with it, she was engulfed in flames. Being the scrapbooker that I am, I ran to the house and got the camera and camcorder and documented the tragic event, after calling 911 of course. We huddled behind a nearby tractor, as we heard explosions of bullets going off that had been scattered in the floorboard. A few minutes later, the fire truck pulled up and finished putting out the flames.

What remains of the cab is an empty shell. A metal frame of a steering wheel, one popped tire (but 3 good ones and all rims are fine), melted dashboard, and wire frame and springs where the seat had been. All glass gone, mirrors, grill, headlights. Just an empty skeleton remains. Even paint is gone.

But part of her remains. The rear end was unscathed, and the feed box is fine. With a little work, a new cab and many parts under the hood, including an engine, we can rebuild her. Like the phoenix, our Whore will rise from the ashes and be a feed truck, once again.
