Clearing Clutter/Liberating Self Nov 1st
Submitted by Hope on Mon, 11/01/2004 - 6:17am
Here we go....our new thread begins on a Monday and it's the 1st day of the month. Must mean we're in for a productive week right? *Right*????? We could move some old stuff out and make space for the new stuff coming in at Christmas time. Maybe even move some furniture around to give the newly de-cluttered space a new, fresh look.
If you're in a rut try de-junking. Wonderful new experiences will come your way when you're not bogged down

Not Really a "Member" on This Thread
But I am definitely trying to declutter once again. Amazing at how fast it builds back up, isn't it???
Yesterday, I purged DD's dresser and closet of clothes that do not fit her any longer. They are bagged up and in my car to pass on to cousin. Of course, I have a box from older sister of same cousin in my car I need to go through. Most of them are going to be too big and will just be stored until later, though.
This week I want to dejunk the following:
* Bathroom closet (where do all of those almost-used bottles come from?)
* My dresser - I have a sock drawer and two junk drawers that are despicable!
* My closet - need to get it back in shape
Maybe if I check-in her more often, I will be motivated to get some things purged in my home!
Y'all have a good day!
Vonnie
Hi Vonnie
We don't have "members" on this thread....you can come by any old time you want
.
When I re-did my bedroom, and the floors in the closet were actually clean, I started using a basket system for certain items. All my older housework pants and shorts are rolled up and in a square basket in the closet. I wanted to seperate them from clothes I would actually wear out and about. I also have all my old around the house socks in there as well. The ones that still had enough life to do housework. It's worked really well, no more digging around looking for things.
OK then all of you.....Christmas really *is* coming now. When I get back from holidays I'll be busy painting, but will check in on the Christmas Countdown and get myself some kind of ready. I hope to do a little Christmas shopping when I'm stateside.
Today? I have 14 hours to get myself ready to go. We have to leave home at 4:30am to get to the airport. So....pack, clean my purse out, get golf clubs packed properly for a plane trip, clean up the house abit and whatever else. I'm soooo looking forward to some nicer weather
.
I'll check in later, must get DH out the door to the office right now.
Monday!
Have a wonderful holiday, Hope! I'm wishing great golf-weather for you!
I can't even begin to recount the end of last week or the week-end...but it's a new month as well as a new week so I'm just looking forward from here!
I don't have any hours at the high school this week. I'm almost done with them, and needed a "research week" so I won't be back there until next week. I have a clear slate as far as assignemtns go, but have tons of research to gather, read, and organize into some semblance of order.
We had guests for dinner last evening, so my house is in good shape. I need to drag the garbage cans to the curb for pick-up, but the bathrooms and floors are done (usually a "Monday-thing").
I've spent a bit of time this morning with my calendar...getting November and December documented, as much as I possibly could! Now that marching band is over, our week-ends get back to normal....maybe I'll get an extra "date" this month!
It's Reality Check Week for the Christmas Countdown....budget, wardrobe check, household declutter, good health habits.....anybody besides me gonna have "extra" work this week

Hi Vonnie! Decluttering unites all of us! Good to "see" you!
OK! it's almost noon: I have 2.5 hours until scouts, so I need to get some research done!
Have a great day, all!
Blessings,
Lenora

Wishful thinking
I reckon Hope's mutterings about a productive week are designed to make us overlook the fact that she isn't even going to be here for most of it! How long are you away for btw Hope?? I know this thread will slide without you pumping us all up!
Hey Vonnie... we need somebody else's voice around here, especially with Honey still AWOL (she's getting someone to look at her computer apparently, but it didn't sound great - I get very rare emails via someone else's computer!), and Cari incommunicado - no emails at all. With Hope away that could just leave Lenora and myself, the yin and yang of organisation!!
Please help us with the middle way!
I was looking forward to telling you all about my newly decluttered desk, but I got sidetracked and now I can't find it again!
story of my life really, especially the getting sidetracked part.
I've made a good long list today, though mostly of lists that I need to make, so I can see a nasty spiral appearing, and I can almost hear the hysterical cackling of DH and my parents! Well hell, I've done my Christmas card list from scratch, so what do I care!
I've also started a list of cooler weather clothes that we'll need to get hold of next year, and things that we already have that will be suitable. I've also spent much of the afternoon looking at family entertainment type performances for the next few weeks... I think I've gotten it down to a puppetry performance of The Little Match Girl for sometime the week after next (depending on DH's travel plans), a Christmassy evening on DS' 6th birthday (DH almost certainly won't be around) and possibly a Christmas music performance later in December once DH is definitely back home.
I need to get over to Organized Christmas and get hold of the emails. Somehow I didn't get them last year and I haven't had them this year, though I'm definitely a member and I thought I set up my preferences properly. No Rudolph Club stuff either. I'm going to be hunting for the shiny foil strips I have somewhere for making paper chains (assuming I still have them), checking that the advent calendars are where I think they are, sorting through my Christmas file (which nods a head in the direction of the Christmas Countdown), and generally preparing what I have for the school holiday boredom fest. I need to rearrange those art supplies so I can really make use of them.
Oh yes, I found a lovely site recently... full of printable paper toys. I haven't made any up yet, but they look gorgeous - very Victorian. I actually found the site via www.activityvillage.co.uk which has quite a bit of stuff for younger kids, but here it is...
www.thetoymaker.com - look for holidays at the top I think. They even little Christmas decorations and an advent calendar.
Actually Lenora, I think your girls might like that site too, especially your younger one. It's well worth taking a look.
I'm done here, or it really will be all hot air and no doing. I also need to collect DS in a few minutes, so I'd better not get too caught up on here!
Kerri.
" Let me explain... no, there is too much ~
Let me sum up..."

(A quote from "The Princess Bride" which seems oddly appropriate.)
ACK!!

I am. Truly.
I have literally lost about two weeks, I think.
Much has been going on with adjusting children to a new country and helping my oldest son deal with the death of his natural father. There has been a bit on all of our plates and the stress of it all hit me rather belatedly this week.
DS8 went to school for one day and then his school had a ten day break. (That always happens to us when the kids begin school ~ they always seem to be starting at term break, or something...) and DS12 will be starting school tomorrow. (Sigh of relief from me... I have been with both of the children almost non-stop 24/7 for the last two months. I am about to go out of my freakin' mind!!) *Crazy-Face icon inserted here.* I mean it ~ I am about to go out of my mind with the need for getting *AWAY* from these people.
I am soooooooooooooo happy that they are going to school!! And as an aside: they look quite dapper (and OH, so cute!) in their school uniforms.
A few moments of peace for myself will be a luxury that I won't even be able to believe at first... And I need it. I really, really, really need it. (Have I mentioned that I am about to go out of my mind?)
Declutter?

hehehehehehehe.
Did that.
Whole House ~ In the USA.
Now I need to clean, organize and clean this house...
Though I really *should* clean, declutter and organize the shoe cupboard. Oh, MY...
I did pick up Christmas Wrap and Everyday wrapping paper ~
I must get started with International mailing for Christmas...
YIKES!!
And Hiya, Kerri ~

You'll be hearing from me via email ~ I have not had computer time, overly... and you have been on my mind... even if I haven't written. Again.
And tomorrow?
I am beginning Morning Pages again...
*Hugs All Around*
Cari
PHEW!!!
I am just so damn glad you're back with us! I knew you'd be having a lot to go through with everything; I was just worried about how you were coping with it all. You sound frantic, but no worse than anyone else would be in your current situation.
School uniforms should be mandatory in every country of the world, and for kids who can't afford them they should be supplied from some kind of fund that is kept absolutely private. They are wonderful for both parent and child because it saves you having to think about what to wear, it saves everyone from the hassle of buying a ton of nice looking clothes to compete with everyone else... it's just so much less fuss! Having had a uniform for my infant school, then no uniform for primary and then back to uniform for most of high school and back to none for 6th form, I know of what I speak! I'm also getting to be of the opinion that all primary school girls should wear some kind of pinafore, because it's so much easier for younger girls to stay neat in a pinafore than in an ordinary skirt.
Figured out the emails for Organized Christmas - there aren't any any more! Bummer. I changed my homepage to get the messages regularly, but I think it may have driven me nuts by tomorrow and I'll probably be back to Yahoo UK pretty fast!
I realised I haven't done a charity drop in ages (saw a Salvation Army van drive by earlier today!) so I can't have been doing much decluttering recently. Need to get back on that. I do have a few items ready to go, but not enough for a drop yet. I'll definitely go before Christmas, so probably by the end of this month to try and get the stuff to people who might need it before Christmas.
Cari, I don't think your boys would be especially excited by the paper toys site I mentioned in my previous post, but I think you probably would!
ok, I'm done for now. I seem to be watching some silly election. I'm so glad I found out about the electoral college this time because at least it makes sense now, even if it isn't sensible (to me!).
Kerri.
I just have to translate
Pinafore in UK=jumper in US
jumper in UK=pullover in US
What do you call them Hope?
You definitely
make communication easier Becky!
Does your American translation of pinafore get across the fact that this is a dress, not trousers, because 'jumper' sounds to me like it might come from what we would call a jumpsuit (especially for guys working under their cars!) and therefore might be closer to what we'd call dungarees - the trouser version of a pinafore. Although I guess one could have a dungaree dress too, which is the adjustable straps of the dungarees instead of fixed shoulder straps of a pinafore.
honestly... trust me to take something as simple as Becky's translation and make it more confusing than ever.
and just for the record I believe we also occasionally call jumpers pullovers or sweaters too. But not to be confused with a fleece.
I'm going now before anyone thinks I've been drinking.
Hey Lenora... how's it going in the irritatingly slow to report state of Ohio?? See... told you I've been watching!
But only because I didn't have to stay up to the wee hours of the morning to do it.
Kerri.
Now you know
why Brits get so irate about both languages being called 'English' when clearly American is a whole different language. And while we're on the subject...
My daughter just showed me her spelling test where she has to do a correction for the word 'laundromat' because she heard laundry mat (can you tell she doesn't often bother to revise her spellings!). I took a few minutes to remember that the English equivalent is 'laundrette'. Some ex-British colony and Commonwealth country this is... they are far too heavily influenced by American television, and the poor kids are constantly confused as to which spellings are right and which are not.
Grrr....
Apparently the real drinker here is actually the one who sounded most sober - must be practice. Time to break out my old pal Jack!
Kerri.
A jumper is only what you'd c
A jumper is only what you'd call a pinafore dress, Kerri. NOT a jumpsuit.
I think Singapore should get to use whatever words it wants, as a sovereign nation.
I think I need a drink after
I think I need a drink after all that!
Those things guys wear when working on their cars are called "cover-alls" in the US, Hope.
Not overalls--those are the things farmers and carpenters wear.
Pinafores are the full aprons (usually frilly) that go over a child's dress.
Speaking of clothes and such, I still have to dig out my winter things. Its been fairly warm here, but turned off cold today and I wasn't prepared. I should have known. For the last 2 days the geese have been flying South. . .honking all the way.
Since I have to search out winter clothes today, I think it will probably be a good time to declutter old and no longer worn clothing. DH moved the horse trailer into the driveway for me to make it easier to load things up, so no excuses. . .gotta get moving with it today!
Apologies
On behalf of my state for keeping you all in suspense!!!
I dozed off around midnight; DH woke me about 1:30 AM to go to bed. He brought me coffee in bed this morning, probably to soften the blow that our local levey for a new high school didn't pass (by only about 600 votes) and that Ohio's Issue 1 did pass. Both outcomes suck. (And that's not a term I ever use.)
The outcome of the national election seems to have not gone as I preferred, either. I'm rather an agnostic when it comes to national politics, but did consider Kerry to be the "lesser of two evils" in this election.
On other subjects: Kerri, I'm totally with you on school uniforms! They haven't really come to the front in public schools, except in some of the urban elementary and middle schools...but I sure wish they would! My DD9 wears "jumpers." I love them in winter over a turtleneck and warm fuzzy tights!
Ladies have "jumpsuits" which are pants/tops connected, though they havent been in style for years... We'd probably say "coveralls" for the uniform kind worn by mechanics. Your description of "dungarees" we'd call "overalls" which are bib-pants with the buckled straps. My kiddos wore those often as toddlers. DD9 still has one "jumper" made like "overalls" but with a skirt......
Cari! Hallo there! I'm so glad you're back with us!
LOL on "dejunking" your entire American household!
I'm at home today...at least until class this evening. I have two assignments to complete, and more research to find/print/read.
I'm expecting 25 people for our Girl Scout ceremony and dinner (here!) on Friday! Our little girls are "flying up" from Brownie Scouts to Junior Scouts.
I may not be "back" until after that!
Blessings,
Lenora

hi
Passing through very quickly to say I MISS you guys so much!!!
Hopefully I'll be back with you all soon.
I'm using the library PC at the moment, and I only have 30 minutes or so which is nearly gone already
My PC is with a very nice chap called Ron who is fixing it
Honey xx
ps I HATE school uniforms, Kerri! I object on principle on uniforms and homework. I always was a bit of a rebel
Saturday!
Hello, girlfriends!
Well, the G.S. ceremony/dinner last night was a wonderful success. Had all the mommas in tears and the girls bursting with pride and importance! My mother....the ultimate event-planner/hostess...called me this morning to tell me how impressed she was! I guess we never get too old to be pleased by a "good job" from our moms!
We have a birthday party for my niece today. We're playing LaserTag then going back to my sister's for pizza and cake. Should be fun! (I never turn down the opportunity to act like an adolescent
)
It's my turn to feed the confirmation class (11 kids) tomorrow for dinner...they have confirmation in the afternoon, then a half-hour dinner break before Youth Fellowship. I'm thinking: chicken parmesan (using chicken patties) with pasta, salad and garlic bread. That's easy enough to do.
I have a busy week next week...HA! What's new?, and DH is off to Minnesota and Chicago for the week.
I'm hoping for some desk/planner time this evening....I get that "panic" knot in my stomach until I get things laid out so I can SEE that it is possible to get it all done! Until then, I'm gonna just run around in a black-lighted maze of fog and shoot beams of light at everything that moves! (It can be very theraputic!
Have a great week-end, all!
Blessings,
Lenora

Wow!
Becky told me about this group, and I recognize so many names! I've been posting on the Flybaby group, but I'm taking on the basement and garage this week, with DH helping watch the boys. Big clearing clutter, liberating self kind of thing. I won't post much, wondering if you guys are going to start a new thread this week. Man, it is so good to "be back" with support of Imaginary Friends, ha ha!
--Karin
Becky, I haven't read through the posts on this thread yet. Did you mention to them an idea of starting Christmas cards for our group? I'll collect names, maybe keep it by group (Flybabies and Clearing Clutter), and we can send cards out this year if you'd like. I don't care if it's 2 or 20 people. If you guys want to participate, click on "write to author" under the post and send your snail mail addy. If you're already doing something, I'll catch onto that later. Ciao!
no, I didn't
But we were talking about holiday cards on the Flybabies thread. If you want to participate, Karin covered how to do so in her post.
somebody needs caffeine
Becky - did you realise that you were responding to Karin's post and telling her that she herself had explained it on Flybabies?? That's exactly the kind of thing I do... either don't realise who i'm talking too, or realise but then stick that person's name in when I meant someone else because I was already thinking of the first person!
I'm decluttering myself, DH and kids off on holiday for a few very short days. I wonder whether my SIL will take it personally that we made this decision the day after she came home from her 10day holiday in China!?!
it's amazing how much washing I've managed to do today, and squeeze myself into the doctor's office too (and DH - he has gout, I have a mole just in the wrong place for my bra!). When there's no time at all to do anything I tend to move a whole lot faster. I need to work on creating imaginary or somehow real deadlines for myself in future.
Still have a bit more washing to do, packing list and packing, and go pick up DH from work... probably very early. He says the medication must be pretty strong!
Technically he had two days off according to the doctor but he insisted he had things to do if we're going away. Oh... and dinner!
Karin, good luck with your basement. That's going to feel really great to offload a ton of stuff like that. If you have sentimental guys deciding they can't live without decrepit and disgusting things they haven't seen in years you may have to step in! Post as much as you like, and we rarely manage to get a new thread up each week at the current rate - more like once a month, though I suppose we could get more chatty as Christmas approaches.
Must be time for Lenora and Cari to pop their heads up for air...
Kerri.
no, no!
I wasn't responding to Karin in the post! It was supposed to be a continuation of Karin's post, and was for y'all's benefit. I meant, since we were talking about holiday cards on the Flybabies thread, if those of you who prefer this thread would like to participate, please see Karin's instructions above.
GASP! WHEEZE!
That would be me....Popping up for air!
I taught my first "entire" class yesterday! My supervising teacher was very complimentary, and the kids (11-12 graders) were great! It's really nice to teach an "engaged" group of students!
DH is off in Minnesota...he'll head to Chicago on Wednesday and will be home Friday.
I'm totally stalled on HGP/Chirstmas Countdown right now, although I did get a few more gifts bought last week (including gift certs for Laser Tag!)
I'm going to the University for my first class, then to the dentist (lost a filling)
I have a Kappa Executive Board meeting this evening, and I've already made arrangements to miss my evening class.
I spent the bulk of the weekend reading horrifically boring research studies for two papers. YAWN!
Kerri! Have a lovely holiday!
Karin! I've got "basement liberation" on the books for next week! Did I tell you guys that I'm "decluttering" my MIL? She has been approved for an apartment in a Senior/Disability building just 15 minutes from here! She gets the keys on Friday! Although we've managed pretty well, I'm REALLY looking forward to having some "alone" time in my own house!
We've started bringing up some of her kitchen stuff from the basement so it can be run through the diswasher, etc. She's going to have to part with TONS of "unnecessary" stuff, which will be hard for her, as she seems to have an affinity for knick-knacks, and probably has three times as many clothes as will fit in her closets (most of which she can't wear,) but she doesn't want to part with any of it. DH says he's going to be "firm" about either selling or donating the things that won't fit or be used in her new place. He wants to start working on finishing the basement this winter.
I've got to be off to the shower, so I can get my hair dry before going to campus. It's about 33 degrees here right now...we're only expecting to hit about 40 degrees (went down to about 21 last night!)...wet hair is NOT good when walking across campus in freezing wind!
Blessings,
Lenora

Popping up for air ~
And resubmerging myself again...
I will log in later to do an update ~

I am only flying through...
and realized that I show up as online and Kerri would have spotted me.
Then I would have been ratted out...
So here I am posting a fly-by post.
Which is something, I guess.
*HUGS*
Cari
p.s. Hello everybod-eeeeeeeeeee!

One down.....
One to go! Papers, that is! My paper for Family Financial Management is finished: Deliberate Downsizing: Making the transition from two incomes to one. I had fun researching and writing that one.
My paper for Middle Childhood and Adolescence is The impact of gender and self-efficacy on academic achievement. Gotta keep plugging away on that one, now.
DD14 and friend went to do some volunteer hours at the Humane Society. They generally end up washing food bowls and playing with the dogs. My friend is then taking them to see the Sponge Bob movie. (Glad I got out of that one!)
I did get all my "fall" decor down and put away. Depending on how much I get done on the other paper, we may dig out some Christmas decorations tomorrow...it may have to wait until later in the week, though. We'll see.
DH is out braving the crowds doing some shopping! He's traditionally a "Christmas Eve" shopper...so this is a switch! I loaded him up with advertisments and used a big marker to circle what I needed. Hopefully he'll be successful and not come home grouchy!
Well, that's my update for now...back to being academically-productive!
Blessings,
Lenora
Getting on the Ball!
Well, I've been a "homemaking" lump for a couple of days! I whipped the main floor into shape this evening, though, so I feel a little better.
The girls and I will do chaos control in the bedrooms tomorrow...and laundry, so when DH gets home on Friday all will be in order!
I'm having lunch with my pastor (my friend!) on Friday and then DH and I have plans with another couple on Friday evening. I have a scholarship fundraising "Style Show and Luncheon" to atttend on Saturday. I'm also coordinating the morning refreshments for a dual-church conference with our district superintendent (of the denomination) Saturday morning. I'll go in early to get the coffee and cider (warm and spiced, yum!) ready and the muffins and breakfast-breads presented. I really should attend the meeting, but the Style Show is a committment I have as an officer with that group, so that's where I'm going.
I think I have enough research pulled for the two big papers I have left this semester. I need to get those outlined next week. I still have 5 other "assignments" to turn in this semester, but thankfully, they're spaced well enough that I'll be able to get it all done with out freaking out!
I've registered for next semester already! I have one class that I have to get "permission" to take...but that's basically a formality. I can't believe I've only got one semester of classes left to finish (plus two classes that I have to take this summer). I need to register for my formal state exams soon. I'm thinking about taking them in early January..just to be done with it. The Student Teaching application is eight pages long! I also have to "fluff" my portfolio (specific samples from most of my courses and classroom experiences). It's a THREE INCH binder and is almost full. Sheesh! The application and portfolio will be turned in sometime in February.
Well, it's almost 12:30 in the morning...Aunt Flo is being a horrible guest this month...she's usually not so difficult. Another dose of advil and the rest of my herbal tea and maybe she'll settle down enough that I can sleep.
Blessings,
Lenora
Like Carianne, I'm just doing
Like Carianne, I'm just doing a fly-by. Dejunking has been hard to keep up with around here lately, although I have rid my family of some old clothing that no one seems to have noticed missing yet. I feel like a dog chasing its tail and never quite catching up to it. . .I keep seeing everything that needs done but not quite making it.
I am so angry. I just came from parent/teacher conference at the kids school, where I did not see ONE teacher! with a dozen teachers between the 2 kids, none were found in their rooms where the parents meet with them. Two had people with them, but I saw no others teachers in the building. Grrrrr!!
Hello? (hello? hello?...)
This empty cavern has an echo!
Hope and Kerri are on holiday...Honey's computer is on holiday..Cari needs a holiday...Sheesh! I vote we all hop a flight to some tropical island and "holiday" together!
DH has pulled up all of MIL's kitchen boxes from the basememt. They're now all over my dining room. We need to get them sorted, washed and reboxed this evening.
I'm behind on some reading, so I also want to catch up on that....and do some "outlining" for my papers. I've set a goal to get at least one paper DONE by next Sunday...and then wrap the other up over Thanksgiving break. I did finish two other "smaller" assignments, too...that feels better!
Not much else going on, I just hated to see our thread off the homepage, completely!
Blessings,
Lenora
I'm baaackkk
Hi all!
The computer guy managed to get it fixed thank goodness and we got it back yesterday
I think we need to have windows reinstalled, as we're still getting lots of problems but the system is at least useable. Great news though! We visited my Auntie yesterday and she announced she had been saving for a long time for a new PC for DS13! I had no idea so I was quite gobsmacked. It's wonderful news as this one really is on its last legs and it isn't very up to date. A new one will be better for DS13's homeschooling and as he is really interested in computers it will be great for him to have a really up to date one. All I ever do with it is emails and the internet so I will keep this one downstairs for me and he will have the other in his room. Aren't we blessed, with such a lovely thoughtful Auntie?
It's wonderful to be back, I can't tell you how much I have missed you all. The odd hour in the library just isn't the same. Reading along with everyone here is so much a part of daily life for me, even when I don't post. So I feel like I'm come home
On the decluttering front, I am doing pretty well lately (probably because I haven't had the computer!). I am in the middle of thoroughly sorting out my room, which I've been doing a little of every day for the past week or so. I have decluttered clothes, shoes, hundreds of items of paperwork, loads of stuff. I need to get started on DS13's room soon, as now the new PC will be coming in there soon we need to seriously declutter and rearrange some furniture to make room for it.
Well, right now I have to declutter all the dirty dinner dishes into the dishwasher! See you all tomorrow
Boy it feels good to say that.
Great to see you back, Honey!
Great to see you back, Honey! And you're right. . .what a nice Aunt you have.
Lenora, it will feel good to have your house back to yourselves, I'm sure. Even when we care a lot for someone, its easier when its just your family under one roof. . .I've been there a time or two.
I'm not getting much decluttering done at the moment. . too much other stuff going on. I am doing a small bit of decluttering as I pack for our move within the next week or two.. . should be lots more but I'm moving slowly!
Can't decide whether to have a yard sale or haul stuff off to Good Will. . .after the move, of course.
Junk, junk, junk!
Lenora, I DID read right, decluttering your MIL. How neat for you and your MIL! I hope her move/transition goes well. Oh my, you've been working so hard at school, too!
Fern, what a frustrating time with conferences!
Honey, HI!!!!! What a good job you've done decluttering! It really feels good, doesn't it?
Fern, I really liked doing yard sales, before I had three kids running around and trying to keep stuff, too. I just donate most to Goodwill, if the stuff is in good shape. If you claim deductions on your taxes, there are some great programs to help you make a list of everything you give away, too keep track of its value for tax deductions, too.
Well, my decluttering the basement has gone better than I expected. I still have a lot of work to do there and in the garage, but I filled the truck with stuff to get rid of and did it. And in the boys' room, too. Old clothes.
We are doing some work on the house this winter, so I need to clear out the basement as much as possible. I talked with DH about renting a storage area for month or few when we sell the home, and stuff it with as many boxes as we can, clear out the house a bit. Well, why not clear out stuff we're not using right now, eh?
CHRISTMAS CARDS. A few people responded already, and I've added them to the list for this forum group. If you want to participate in a group Christmas card mailing, just click on "write to author" after this message and send me your snail mail addy. I understand if you don't want to send cards, I didn't send any last year, except to DH. BUT if you want to receive a card from me (I can't speak for everyone), just send me your info and tell me that, and I'll send you one, anyway.
Since I'm already putting them together it wouldn't be much to add a few more.
Decluttering. I've shown DH where I keep my Going to Goodwill bag and where to put things we declutter. He went through four boxes in the garage last weekend and got rid of things, too. YEAH!
Well, back to the grunt work. It's going to be a busy day today...
--Karin
Hi all...I'm home
I've been back a couple of days now, but needed time to check in and visit with everyone and make sure they were fine. Also needed time to read backposts before I started posting again. A Monday morning seemed the best time to jump back into the fray.
Honey, what a pleasant surprise to see you back on and pecking. We have so missed you
. Nice Auntie, nice Auntie, nice Auntie!! It will be great for both you and "J" to have your own puters.
So the move is finally on Fern. It seems to have taken a long time. Just think, a couple of weeks of madness and it will be over.
Speaking of madness
, how's it going this week Carri?
Lenora, you are looking like your busy usual self. You go girl! Getting MIL organized and settled will be quite a task I'm sure. I hope she adjusts quickly.
OK then Kerri, refresh my memory...I'm old...when exactly are you making the "big" move?
Hi Karin, I quickly skimmed the Flybaby thread(don't remember much though). It seemed you were mucking out the basement. Yaaay for de-cluttered basements!!!! I'm surprised you have time with "J" just getting home after a year away
and :nodding guy:
.
Let's see, I think Becky was on here somewhere talking language. Here goes
pinafore-as Fern described it, a fancy apron affair worn over girls dresses. We don't see them much, as they're not a fashion trend right now.
jumpers-a dress, usually aline(hhmmm sp?), without sleeves and worn with a blouse or turtleneck underneath.
coveralls-worn by, mechanics, plumbers, painters, or anyone wanting to keep their clothes clean. One piece with sleeves, loose fitting to go over other clothing.
overalls-bibbed jeans or pants.
jumpsuit-one piece, like coveralls but snugger and more dressy uppy. Again, not a trend at this time so we don't see many around. Even the guys got into wearing them in the 70's during the disco mania. Along with platform shoes! That was a sad time for mens fashion...nothing scarier than a man in a jumpsuit
.
sweater-knit top.
fleece-merely a fabric used to make any number of garments.
kangaroo/hoodie-a long sleeved top with a hood. Can be a pullover or zip front, worn by both sexes.
leotards/tights-heavier, pantyhose-like stockings, only worn in cooler weather.
cape-over the shoulders, open front, no sleeves but usually has slitted openings to get your hands through. Worn in place of a jacket or coat.
poncho-like a cape but more casual. Is not open down the front and pulls on over the head.
We have laundromats.
And...I like the idea of school uniforms. They eliminate the brand name "dress stress" kids have to endure(and parents).
Now, onto my big huge to do list. I'm still dealing with my return from holidays laundry, which I'll finish up today. I also need to compact and store the now empty luggage.
I have some phone calls to make regarding the new house and a meeting to set up with the builder re some changes.
Also need to meet with the lighting people this week and make decisions on fixtures so the wiring plan can be nailed down.
I've a meeting at my bank later this week to shuffle some old pension plans into a different place.
Also need to make a trip to the lab for some fasting bloodwork my doc wants done(part of my yearly check).
Final decision needs to be made on new appliances(fridge, stove) and the information gotten to the cabinet fellows.
I *need* to get groceries.
Will the weather allow me to get some last minute raking up done in the yard? It sure would make spring clean-up easier.
Did I mention my house is a mess...it could use a Round Robin.
Oraganize stuff to give away. Truck is coming to do a pickup on the 25th.
Plan for Fri or Sat night to go to DIL's and help her get her house decorated for Christmas. She wants it done before she has the baby, which could be any day. I must be on call now for granny duty for when the hospital trip happens.
I feel like I'm forgetting something, but that's what my upcoming week is looking like at this point. Most of it is run around in the car stuff, which I hate doing, so I'll combine several of those chores into one or two big city trips.
About holidays. We had a blast!!! I could just move down to Arizona in the winter(alot of Canucks do). We stayed in Scottsdale, handy to a good deal of shpping and golfing. The weather was perfect, and warmer than I'd expected. I took too many of the wrong clothes. Even on the day it rained I felt warm. Great shopping, beautiful golf courses, and wonderful places to eat. The dining highlight was BIL's birthday at the Biltmore. WOW!! Get a load of this.....a glass of house wine cost $40.00. We'll be taking about *that* for years to come
. I can't believe I'm laughing about it. Oh well, BIL got to sit and dine in Ronald Reagans(is my spelling brain drained today?) chair, whoop-de-doo.
It's back to reality for me, cold weather, eating in front of the tv, laundry, and scraping up bargains wherever I can
.
OK, gotta get going on this laundry. It sure is good to be back home with you all. Later gals.
That Monday feeling.....
Why is my tap dancing class on a Monday? The last thing I feel like doing on Monday mornings is dancing! I do enjoy it when I get there though
Good exercise, too.
I didn't get a lot done today.............
Morning - tap, followed by errands at local shops
Afternoon - napped for two and a half hours!!
Evening - grocery shopping
So, no decluttering today. Tomorrow I have a free day so I'm planning on finishing up the sorting out in my room.
Words............
Anne, I am so glad you like 'gobsmacked!'
Hope, a leotard is like tights? Over here a leotard is like an all in one thing that covers the torso and the arms to the elbow. They're worn for dance or yoga. Some people wear them for tap dancing..........not me, I hasten to add!!!
Do you have 'bodies' over there? A body is like a leotard but is more of an everyday thing, you would wear it with a skirt or trousers over the top. I don't wear those either, I am kind of long in the body and I have trouble getting the poppers to meet underneath, if you see what I mean.
Christmas......Karin, I have a list of names and addresses as I organised the cards last year, if it's any help to you just ask. It's probably easier if people send you their addresses anew this year though as so many people have moved!
Apologies to everyone, but I am not going to take part in the Christmas cards this year. I have done for the last two years, but this year I am having a very simple Christmas and doing only the bare minimum. I haven't got all that much heart for Christmas this year without my Auntie who we lost in April, but I have to do my best for DS13, so I am still celebrating it but in a more low key way than usual.
Thank you all for the welcome back!
I'm back too
from that tropical island... but we drove up there instead of flying. We went to Penang which is quite far north in Malaysia. Of course it's still monsoon season so we had to be careful at dinner time because that seemed to be when the rain insisted on arriving. Hope's glass of wine would have covered a couple of our dinners for 4 I reckon... possibly all our meals for the 4 days in fact!
so now I have to figure out a new day to decorate the house with everone, and before DH disappears (which could be next Tuesday). The kids are finished with school by the end of this week, although only one is going to school for most of the week, and we had a public holiday yesterday anyway (Eid). Next week and the week after are partially taken up with their holiday Chinese classes - we chose the intensive version over the every week type so we could still go away. This was settled before we decided to go away at the weekend!
My next main job is the Christmas cards. I need to do some clearing up too, but my SIL was bored on her three and a half days off this weekend (2 public holidays) so she did a fair bit of cleaning!
I also need to put together some Christmas packages pretty quick. Fortunately I dealt with the vast majority by sending things off with my parents, but there's still a couple left. I went through my Christmas file last night and dejunked some papers into either the bin or my scrap paper box, but I'm really not feeling very Christmassy yet. Knowing that this happened last year too I was hoping the family decorating day might get me more in the mood.
oh yes, and I need to download my photos... better get on to that, and maybe then I can print out and send some recent ones to people who don't have email access.
Kerri.
I understand about not wantin
I understand about not wanting to do Christmas. I'm very sorry about your Auntie, too. I'm trying hard at Christmas this year because DH is back, but my heart's not really in it yet, truth be told. Last year kind of kicked me hard.
Honey, I'll just wait for folks to send me their addys, because there might be a bunch who don't want to participate. But like I said, I'd still love to send one to YOU and others with absolutely no obligation for a return.
You guys don't know how much you've meant to me over the years.
Decluttering, I got rid of about half of my Christmas junk collected over the years, kept the good stuff, and a bunch of new things I bought at like 90% off last year. Simple lights for outside and some character ornaments for the boys. At that price, it's not even worth trying to untangle the old lights and figure out which bulbs are out, etc. Cool thing is everything is in green and red boxes now. So cute! When I take the stuff out to decorate, I may get rid of more. We'll see...
Love having DH home, hate the additional piles of stuff everywhere. Little does he know I really DID declutter his stuff before he got back!
Not the work things, but his clothes, shoes, etc. He doesn't even miss it, can't remember what he had. Maybe I'll get him some nice new shirts for Christmas to replace the ones he'd had for, well, since we were married in 1991.
Take care!
--Karin
What, nobody posting?
Man, I had kind of a rough day. Nothing major, but I'm already overwhelmed with DS23months' therapies, that adding more to do just broke me a little today.
SO, I'm up tonight and just going through things like a madwoman, getting rid of stuff. Mostly the Paper Monster. Piles and piles of it. I need sleep, but I need quiet time to think and get some things straight. So, I'ma declutterin' Momma tonight!
One garbage bag full, more to follow...
--Karin
Morning all
I missed posting yesterday I think. I've been busy though, and will remain so the rest of this week so don't expect too much in the way of posting from me.
Watching Honey and Karin de-clutter like mad is reminding me that I'd better get some boxes *quick*. I'll be de-cluttering in a flurry myself, but probably at the last minute. I have until next Thurs to get stuff ready to go. Yup, I'll most likely end up doing it the night before(eye rolling guy).
We don't have "bodies" Honey. We used to have tops that snapped under the crotch but they're "out" at this point in time. I don't recall them having any special name.
Christmas cards....this is the second year in a row that I won't be doing them. I can't imagine getting my shopping done on time this year let alone cards. Much as I'd like to, I'm going to say no to doing cards this year and eliminate some stress. I think cards should be a pleasure to sit down and do, not something one is scrambling to get done. Next year should be a different story I'm hoping. You are a sweetheart Karin, and I will send my address along to you, but I sure don't expect a card.
I was supposed to have a home day today, but have now got a Drs. appt to get to this morning. DH also dragged home an invite from work and I have a Homebuilders Association early annual Christmas party to attend this evening. Oh joy! I hate that thing!! So much for my home day.
I'd best get myself into the shower so I'll be ready to go see the Doc. I'll check back with you this aft.
"Celebration"
I did so well last night I celebrated with a very small midnight snack, a really good little steak. Yum! Then I proceded to do the dishes to hide the evidence, sliced a little bit of my thumb off with the beautiful Wusthoff steak knife when I cleaned it in the sink. So I stayed up most of the rest of the night in our little ER clinic. Nothing major but what a bummer. Pain? A 1. Embarrasment? A 10. I tried to get a doctor's orders for no more dish washing, they laughed. Didn't they realize I was serious?
--Karin
I still feel great, though, getting so much paperwork done. Liberating. But I have so much more to go...
OUCH!
Poor Karin! I can beat you on the "embarrassing thumb tricks," though! Here's the story:
A few weeks ago DH and I had a date. We went to a little bar-and-grill that serves all-you-can-eat prime rib and crab legs on Saturday nights. While cracking a claw, I poked one of the little "pointy things" on the claw right into my thumb! It hurt a little, and bled a little... then I got over it...that Wednesday morning I woke up and the WHOLE tip of my thumb was hot, swollen, and really painful! It hurt so bad that I couldn't hold a packet of sweetner to open for my coffee! I ended up having to open up my thumb and use hydrogen peroxide and antibiotic cream....twice! It took another WEEK for my stupid thumb to really heal...it still has almost a "hole" in it and the skin is just starting to look normal again.
I hope my little crab-leg induced thumb infection alleviates some of your embarrassment! At least a knife is a reasonable reason for a cut!
It's so good to have you all "back," Honey, Karri, Hope, Cari! I was missing my friends!
DH and a friend got all of MIL's furniture moved from the storage unit to her new appartment yesterday. We'll be moving her bedroom furniture and other things this week-end.
I've been reading research all morning. I think I'm going to stop, have some lunch, and give myself a manicure. My nails really need some attention.
I've got class this evening, and of course, all day tomorrow.
I've set a deadline of next Wed. to finish one paper, Then have a week to wrap up the other. I've got a good start on both so hopefully, real-life won't be too compromised!
Have a great Wednesday, all!
Blessings,
Lenora
~"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming ~WOO HOO! What a ride!
Hi
Just popping in so you all don't think I've vanished again
Talking of how well I've been doing with my decluttering, my Mum and I are helping my Aunt's husband sort out all her things this week so I think my clutter may be increasing again. How can I not keep letters I wrote her when I was seven? Or old photos of my ancestors? I am trying to be good and not fall into the trap of keeping everything just because it was hers, but I still think there will be quite a few nostalgic items that I will want to keep.
Totally off-topic, Lenora, did you realise that Dawn who wrote the This Woman's Work blog at http://www.thiswomanswork.com/ is blogging again? Remember she stopped a few months back? I recently found that she's started again. I had quite a lot of reading to do to catch up! Just thought I'd let you know, as I know you were a fan too. Apologies to everyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about!
Well it's past midnight here. I'm off to make myself some hot chocolate and go to bed with a book. Goodnight all!
more lists
as long as my whole body, never mind one arm! DH did a similar thing with a prawn Lenora, and then nearly passed out when the doctor had to burst it. That was Chinese New Year last year, on holiday in Malaysia. Next year we're apparently off to Bali, but I'll be taking a beefed-up first aid kit! Karin, if it still hurts don't be shy about takin some painkillers and sneaking a bit of a break. You'll be all the more refreshed for it!
Honey, I know this is probably insane of me to be saying this to you, encouraging you in any of your bad habits, but... keep whatever you want from your Aunt. Box up anything you can't yet part with and then tackle it properly in another year or so. It'll keep in your loft (with a few pieces downstairs if you can bear them), and then when your wounds are a little less open and painful you can look through things again and be a bit more reasonable about what to keep. Ancestral photos should probably not go up in the loft though!
My mother's having minor surgery on the 30th to install the bit she'll need for her dialysis. They'd rather she doesn't suddenly deteriorate and then have emergency stuff and get stuck on haemodialysis. Hers will be the kind she can do at home and walk around with. Her medication will come by the pallet-load and will weigh approximately half a ton every month. Needless to say they're having to rethink some things, and since our stuff will be stored there for a while next year I now have an added incentive to cut out the crap. As if I needed that kind of an incentive.
And DH kindly reminded me this morning that we've gotten DS almost nothing for his birthday, which, for Honey's benefit, is on 1st December. I will have the car for 5 days in the next two weeks because of extra Chinese classes, but I'll only have five 2hr blocks of time in which to shop without the kids since they break up for their holidays as of tomorrow. Actually DD is due home in little over half an hour and has no school tomorrow. So planning is the name of the day since I won't have time to run round like a headless chicken. We'd expected DH to be going away between now and then, plus all the chaotic family holidays and crises since the beginning of October have totally messed up what I normally do for Christmas. Normally I've overdone the kids' presents by this time, so it's just a matter of picking out suitable things for the birthday. I begin to feel a great deal of sympathy for my parents having a child's birthday to celebrate near Christmas. And I feel even more for my cousin who had a planned caesarean on about December 22nd last year to avoid going into labour during Christmas dinner!
Other Chritmas preparations include the dratted Christmas cards - I suggested to Honey that she use ecards to cut costs and the feeling of effort involved in writing. Need to plan parcels too, clear up before the decorations go up (there's currently nowhere to put the tree because we have a standing fan there!), print out some recent photos (still haven't done that for those being ultra observant!), prepare for Saturday's primary school orientation (and uniform and book buying frenzy) and wrap a small present for DS to take to school tomorrow for their gift exchange.
I think we're all getting worse at this instead of better. I've got OrganisedChristmas up as my homepage this year and I'm not getting any further along than I ever did. I look forward to maybe having a real freezer next year, along with properly seasonal weather (freeze-your-arse-off cold and nasty dangerous slush!). I currently have a clear blue sky and enough hot sun streaming through the window next to me to make me consider turning the nearby fan on as well as the air-con!
Lenora, I wouldn't mind betting that both you and your MIL will be happier with her living more independently nearby instead of under your roof. No house can have two mistresses, and both you and your MIL are used to being mistress of your own home, so no matter how well you get along this will still be better for everyone. And the girls will have somewhere else to go to at times, which will be good for you and them, as well as your MIL. It sounds like the best of all possible worlds and I hope it works out well.
Hope, would it be possible for you to get started on your decluttering during commercial breaks of your favourite programmes or something?? Sometimes that jolts me into starting something I've been putting off. There's no more commitment than a few minutes at a time which often seems less painful. At least make sure you have all the supplies you'll need: boxes, tape, packaging materials, some kind of labelling system...
Kerri.
Hi All. Glad to see someone
Hi All. Glad to see someone has the declutter bug. I'm trying to get it, but it isn't to active around here right now.
Things were so hectic last week that I slap dab forgot a doctors appointment. They called to "encourage" me to come and they rescheduled me for tomorrow. I will be SO glad to get it over with. I detest going to the doctor. Can't seem to get started on anything because of my appts., my dad's appts., my kids appts.. . .you get the drift!
It would be nice to have 3 or 4 days where I don't HAVE to do anything but clean and declutter. . .no needy friends calling, no one showing up at the door, no need to check on anyone. . .just me and plenty of boxes and trashbags.
Who can tell me about ceramic top cook stoves? I got a white on white because I got a great deal on it, then started worrying after the purchase was made, about how the white top would work out. I've never had one of those type stoves before.
Those things you call "bodies", Honey, were called "body suits" in the US. They were very popular in the early to mid 70's but I've not seen any in shops of late. Although, they would be a pleasant change from all that lower belly stuff the teens are showing these days with short tops and low riding pants. They used to be worn with what we called hip hugger pants. They were popular since one doesn't have to keep tucking their shirt in, but they are a pain in the patooty if you have to run to the restroom much!
Anyone dealing with preteen/teens outgrowing Mom and Dad might relate to my article that was published a while back on iParenting.
http://preteenagerstoday.com/resources/articles/outgrowyou.htm
Sorry in advance if I'm not supposed to do that. I just remember wondering if I was the only person in the world dealing with these things.
Any tips on decluttering nerves before a doctor's appointment are welcome.
Great article, Fern!
My DS13 doesn't seem to be embarrassed about being seen with me, it's more when I open my mouth and say anything! I am apparently not allowed to say anything is 'cool', nor to refer to his hooded jacket thing as a 'cardigan' or a 'woolly'.
I think I am fairly 'cool' to his friends though as mine is the only neighbourhood house where the kids are all allowed to come in and play a lot. DS often has several kids in at once, which makes me popular with the other kids AND the parents! Makes sense to be the house where they all hang out, I think. I'm hoping that continues as they all get older, then at least I know where mine is and who his friends are
Ulterior motive, me?
Oh and...........
I forgot to say good luck at the doctor's Fern. I myself had the letter last week to book myself in for a smear test (not sure what you call them? Pap test?) and I haven't done it yet. Must get around to that.
Umm decluttering? None going on around here today. Hope to resume normal service on Friday.
Pap test
Named after the guy who invented them, who had a long last name whose first three letters were "pap."
Thanks, Honey. And I know jus
Thanks, Honey. And I know just what you mean about the talking thing. My kids had just as soon my mouth never open, ha ha.
I decluttered that doctors appointment. I am SO glad to have that behind me. Test results in a few days, then hopefully I can forget about it for another few months.
I always thought Pap smear was the silliest name for such a test, so I am glad to know how that originated, Becky.
Nothing else getting thrown out around here today, although I need to do some serious work on my desk. Maybe after supper and the kids settle down for the evening.
about the pap smear...
it looks like my SIL - the one who got rushed to hospital the other day with heavy blood loss - may have cervical cancer. Several things about this aren't ringing true yet for me though. For one, she should have had a pap smear 6wks post partum, which is 10wks ago now. It could be a misunderstanding or a mis-translation from my less medically informed in-laws though. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that. WHilst I can't honestly say I like the woman even a tiny bit that's really not something I would wish on her, let alone on my BIL.
so all of you due for your pap smears - GO GET THEM DONE!!!
lecture over.
I spent most of my morning pages this morning planning how I was going to win the war on clutter over the next few days. It hasn't been dealt with and over an extended period has been getting totally out of hand. Since then I've cleared the dining table, coffee table and a kitchen counter thing (the type that pokes through into the living/dining room), folded half my laundry (just bedding now) and found a home for the last two files of morning pages. Not a bad start, but I have to keep the momentum going.
I completely lost the cycle for the recycling, which is collected every other Thursday, so now I really have to just throw it away. It's been taking over my kitchen and it's driving me nuts. That, plus a bag of leftover exercise books from DD's school year and the charity drop stuff I'm going to put together should really help me get back on track, feel a weight lifted from the house so I have the energy to deal with the rest.
After that I have a furniture move planned. I have an odd shaped built-in desk, which extends into part of my bedroom. I put a small cupboard and then another small cupboard behind there to create a little private nook some time back. Haven't been using that private nook at all and the things on top of those cupboards extends the visual clutter on my desk right up to the wall (visually I mean - I can't see any floor or the sofa bed properly) and it makes me feel really hemmed in. The reality is that this chair under my bum right now is where I spend my time, no matter how many nooks I create for myself - it's my control centre! - so I may as well mae this comfortable and find a new home for those little cupboards. Plus, one of them is the old computer cupboard which I eventually removed because I was sick of not being able to get at the wiring. I had the scrap paper in it, right at my fingertips, but now the scrap paper is across the other side of the room and only the kids get to use it. It's driving me mildly bonkers!
So there you are... the time has come for rebellion! And I need to sort all this out and get some kind of peace before I clutter the whole place up again with sparkly stuff. Even the number of cushions is driving me crackers since I added the two Christmas cushions. I have to subtract a couple because it's too much.
I find that the clutter is both agitating and enervating at the same time. It annoys the hell out of me and maes me restless, but I can't seem to find the energy to do anything about it! Now I'm past that and ready to really deal with it, and about time too.
who's with me??
Kerri.
fyi Honey
there seems to be a problem with your email because my last mail has been delayed by several days. I'd have sent you a private message, but we both know it could take weeks before you spotted it! Are you over quota again??
Kerri.
Excellent day
for my decluttering efforts. I think I've done most of the things I set out to do today and I kept the momentum going. I've tossed out tons of stuff today, found and lost my desk (I'm experimenting with a switch of printer and in-tray - not keen yet), prepared the charity drop stuff, moved my furniture - who knew my sofa bed fitted there!!!
And I've started eyeing up the kids' room for changes too - I'm getting complaints that my room has changed and theirs hasn't. I think I've probably started something here...
HURRAY FOR ME!!!
and while I'm all enthusiastic I thought I'd try and energise anyone else who's been desperately in need. I know I've been completely out of it, but clear visual lines and furniture changes should help me immensely. Even my pretty yellow (fake) tulips (small ones) will be put away till I need pepping up for Spring!
I think maybe the 4litres of Coke I've drunk in the last ... maybe 3 days... has something to do with the fact that I've been bouncing off the walls. There again, probably not. I may just have reached my personal limit.
Get going girls!
Kerri.
Morning everyone
Where to begin?? Let's see, I went to the Dr on Wed and she ordered me some rest. Yeah right, I had appts yesterday that could not be put off. So today I've scratched my city to-dos and moved them to next week. I'll just lie about and nurse my cold today, and in those moments when I'm bored with lolligagging I'll load junk into those boxes to give away. This was not a good time for me to pick up a cold virus.
I sat down with the lighting people and figured out a lighting package for the new house yesterday. Lighting is a difficult choice for me as I dislike just about everything I see. There sure are some gingky looking fixtures to be had
. Now that I've changed the lighting package I'll have to meet with the builder again and change the hardware package(again) to a different finish. I can't imagine them keeping all these change orders straight.
Sorry about the finger Karin....that's what you get for trying to be sneaky with your eats
.
I think Kerri is right Honey, just pack Aunties stuff neatly and look at it at some later date. Maybe do an album with the letters and pictures?
Kerri, commercial breaks are not long enough for me to work at de-cluttering. I watch very little tv anyway, and the couple of shows I do watch, Desperate Housewives and Survivor, I can't miss a second of. I don't even channel surf during commercials. Nope... I'd *never* get up and work during the breaks for fear of missing something.
I think I'll post a TaDa list later on. That might motivate me to do more. And now??? I'd better go post on that other thread that some kind person pulled up from the ashes. Rats!!!!!
morning all!
No problems with my emails generally, and my inbox isn't full. It's a puzzlement
Busy busy today. I just had to correct that. I accidentally typed 'busy busty'
We brought my Auntie's things home yesterday, mostly to my Mum's house initially as she has far more room than me. At some stage we will go through it all together and sort things out properly.
On the list for today are laundry, cleaning, walking to the shop for bread (or sending DS13 - teenagers come in very useful
) and ironing.
What I feel most like doing is having a nap...........
You know what I might do? I have a friend visiting this evening who is one of those rare and weird people who loves to clean and tidy! What if I leave it all until then? Just kidding, but it's tempting!
Come on now gals..up & at em
Honey, I think it's a grand idea...letting your girlfriend do the cleaning.
You could do a swap. Offer to sit and knit her one of those wonderful dishcloths if she'll clean your house.
OK gals, there's "stuff" to be gotten rid of. Kerri's right when she says we'll all feel better and more energized if we clear our space.
So far this morning I've done my dishes, had a facial, picked my mail up at the Post Office, went to the store and got some boxes. I'm off for a teensy nap now, but will fill some of those boxes when I get up.
Later gals

Up, at 'em, and down again!
I've been on the go since the kiddos left! I've dusted, vacuumed, swept and mopped the main floor, done 3 loads of laundry (wash-dry-put away!) and swiped the downstairs bathroom. Now I'm taking a lunch break before hopping into the shower!
DD14 has a group of friends coming over for videos and munchies this evening. I'm with you, Honey...I'd rather they be here...and comfortable having fun around us, than "out there" somewhere!
We did set some ground rules: PG-13 or under for the movie(s), maximum of 10 guests, we need phone numbers for all, everyone stays on the main floor of the house, and nobody gets to leave until their grown-up picks them up! DD14 says that everyone is "good with that," so we'll see how things go! I already know most of the kids that are coming, but not all their families. I told DD14 to make sure everyone had our phone number, in case the adults wanted to call first. Two of the girls, I've never met their parents...and those are the ones that didn't call! ...I can't imagine......
anyways...that's what is on my adgenda for this evening. We told DD14 that if all goes well, we'll aim for making it a regular (if not weekly) event through the winter. We have no local skating rink, no rec center, nowhere local (and/or supervised) for them to go, so they might as well be here!
Tomorrow, I'm off to the library with the laptop to FINISH that paper! I think no more that 4 hours should do it. I'll be dancin'a jig when that one's done! That paper is for my "Family Financial Management" class. The topic is "Making the transition to being a single-income family." Not surprisingly, although there is a wealth of articles on choosing child-care, balancing work and family, women and careers, etc. there is NO research being done/or published by acadamia in this area that I can find...and I have access to an amazing number of research/article indices....hmmmmmmm
I do think MIL and I will both be happier with the new living arrangements. I've really been concerned that she has no social contacts...it's not healthy...hopefully she'll make some friends there and find something/some way to bring a bit of personal enjoyment into her life.
Honey, I think Kerri is very wise about giving yourself some more healing time before making decisions about your Dear Auntie's things. I did know that Dawn was blogging again. She actually only cut back to about one post a week (I was in withdrawl, even then) and I caught her almost the minute she was back to daily writing! I love her style of writing, her amazing insights...and, of course....those FABULOUS kid-photos!
Well, It's well after noon...and I'm still dirty! I'm off to the shower! Have a great day all!
Blessings,
Lenora

Wide eyed and napless
I am very, very tired today. I never did have that nap OR do the cleaning either! I am not really sure what I did, but the day flew by anyway (It's 8.50 pm here). All I seem to have achieved is one load of laundry and some cross stitching.
My friend is coming over later, she has left her DS with me for a couple of hours as she has a date. The boys play together, hers has special needs (challenging behaviour/ADD) and my DS13 is wonderful with him, though I say it myself
I am very proud of him. Unfortunately he doesn't have any males older than himself in his life at all, so it's nice for him to have my DS as a friend and influence. I am lucky that although I have always been a lone parent, my DS has relationships with several men. Oops that sounded dreadful!! You know what I mean, I was referring to his grandfather, uncles, friends of the family etc. He and my Dad (who is only young himself, at 56) have boys' nights at the movies, do 'manly' jobs together, go off to the barbers together, that kind of thing.
I didn't find it upsetting sorting out my Auntie's things actually, it was a relief to have the opportunity. As we are estranged from her husband we were more worried that the photographs of our ancestors, birth certificates etc would be lost forever. However we wrote and asked if he wanted help sorting her things out (as that had always been my Aunt's expressed wish, as he knew) and he rang up and said yes, so we were able to do it. I think he wanted it all out of his way.
Ahhhhhhh!
DH and BIL just left with most of my MIL's furniture from here. There is still a ton of stuff in the basement and some stuff in the storage unit that must either be brought here, or given away.
I'll be heading down to her new place later to help unpack, put away and get some groceries for her.
I think it will be "weird" not having her here, though. We'll miss her...especially DD9, I think.
I'm just taking a quick break from my papers....must "get-on-back" to that!
Love to all!
Lenora
Uh oh..........
Now I have the computer back my decluttering activities have ground to a halt altogether.
I discovered a website where people who are tracing their family trees can share information. On Friday I input details from old certificates that I have inherited from my Auntie, and found a woman who lives 10 minutes away with whom I share great great grandparents!! Can you believe it? She has traced our great great greats also, and I now know that my family have been based in the East End of London since about 1820. This lady I have found says she has many stories about our shared ancestors, passed down to her by her mother and she is typing it all out for me.
How fab is that???
new cousins!
That makes you third cousins. (Trust me. No one ever follows me when I explain it.)
Uh-Oh
Uh-Oh, Honey! If you are just getting interested in genealogy, you have no clue what you are getting into. Wonderful, Wonderful hobby to have, although it is very time consuming if you get seriously into it. Great thing to pass on to your DS also.
Just working around here today. Not much decluttering going on, but am doing a little packing up.
Clearing the Clutter
Hi all... I am new to this, but I've been reading through the posts and sympathizing with everyone's clutter troubles. I can't seem to figure out where it comes from though. DH and I are trying really hard to stop it. We are newlyweds of one year, and eveyone seems to pass their junk on to us thinking we must need it. We really received everything we needed from our gift registry, so it's just added mess. I suppose I feel guilty about getting rid of it. I think I place too much sentimental value on things. For instance, I save cards. I have every birthday card since i was five. I always mean to make them into new cards but it never happens. I guess I need a push to just throw those things away. Also, when our wedding invitations were printed they accidentally gave us an extra hundred. So, they are sitting in a box in my office. I know it's silly but I can't seem to throw them away.... I know how expensive they were. But what could I EVER do with them?
All in all I just feel like I am being wasteful when I take boxes and boxes to Goodwill every week. I know I am happier without it, but I hate to "lose money". Any ideas?
oh lovely...
problems I can actually come up with answers to!
cards - either throw them all away in one go without looking at any of them. That's probably the best way of getting rid of all of them, without geting sidetracked and sentimental. Alternatively, decide to keep only the cards from your nearest and dearest. I've done this with my kids, only keeping the ones from us and grandparents.
Invitations - keep ten. Throw the rest, or rip them in half to use for shopping lists. If you keep ten you're guaranteed not to run out, even if you find you want to use them on scrap books or anniversary occasions every now and then. Ten is plenty. Any more than that and you'll both be sick of looking at them!
and why would you feel guilty taking things to charity when you don't need them?!?! That's just greedy!
Maybe you could find a way to donate to your favourite charity, or to something that's a bit closer to your heart than basic Goodwill or whatever. Seriously, you need to shift your perspective so that you don't see thes donations as wasting money, but as a way of passing on the good fortune you're receiving when people give you things.
And a final word of warning on that subject... you need to find a tactful way to say 'no thanks' to all these generous people. Let them give it to charity direct. They're just trying to assuage their own guilt at giving things away!
other than that, hello and welcome to this little group!
We're always happy to have fresh blood around because it helps to pep everyone else up, and in this messy pre-holiday period we desperately need the pepping! We get very easily sidetracked, but I'm sure you'll find that only by getting rid of what you don't need before the holidays can you really hope to cope with the massive infux of 'stuff' that seems to drift in. Nobody here knows where junk appears from either, or if they do they aren't telling... I reckon it breeds, because it only takes one piece of paper or one thing in the laundry basket, or one thing popped down where it doesn't belong, and the next next thing you know you'r swimming upstream against the chaos!
dump the guilt and keep us company. Some days are better than others, but there's no point feeling rotten about the bad days. It's more useful to find a way to grab a good day and fly with it!
Monday evening pep talk over. There's something wonderful about Monday evenings... oh yes, being alive to talk about surviving Monday!! Sorry to all of you who are still stuck in your Monday, bu I promise that I've seen the light at the end of the tunnel and it's coming your way!
Kerri.
Hello and welcome!
When I started my decluttering efforts (which was maybe four years ago, a year or so before I found this site). I initially got rid of almost 100 trash bags full of stuff in the first couple of months! This was from a two bedroomed flat
I don't know where I used to put it all. Prior to that I never ever parted with anything unless it was actually broken. If something was in good condition I had to keep it even if I hated it! Go figure. Of those 100 or so bags, some were clothes, toys, household objects. I was able to pass on quite a lot of toys and my son's clothes to a friend, and the charity shop (thrift store) took a lot of it, too. Most of the paper clutter went in the trash.
You could have a yard sale. I have had a couple of boot sales (British equivalent!) but I just get rid of it all to friends and charity now. If you have a sale it's best to take the unsold stuff straight to the thrift store - don't take it home!
Do you have anything that a friend could make use of? Or that you could take to the thrift store? I also have people passing stuff to me - I am a lone parent and am often offered things by family members that they don't need and they think I might. Sometimes it's a lovely item that I am pleased to have - in eleven years I have received a new-to-me sofa on average every two years from family members who were replacing theirs! I also was recently given a great table by a friend. However, it wasn't such a great decision to accept the two whole sets of curtains for evey room in my flat which didn't actually fit so I never used them. I kept them for about seven years in grocery bags because I didn't like to give them back to the person who gave them to me, and I didn't like to take them to the charity shop either in case I offended the giver............mad when you think about it, eh? I also accepted the most hideous pair of extremely loud 1970s style purple curtains, which became another thing I never used but kept for several years. In the end you just have to say to people 'you know that so and so you gave me? We're not really using it now, so would you like it back or shall I pass it to someone else/Goodwill?'
As for that paper clutter, I have that problem too. When I did the big declutter I had every single birthday and Christmas card my son and I had received in the previous seven years! Go through them, keep anything that is really special to you or is so pretty you want to use it for a craft project and get rid of the rest. Another thing I try to do is to ditch magazines as soon as I have read them.
The other regulars are all shaking their heads in disbelief now at ME giving advice!
I am about the least organised person on here! What can I say? I am still a work in progress, and still have a lot of clutter, but nothing compared to my Bad Old Days. The thing is with clutter, it keeps increasing! Just gotta keep on keeping on
Speaking of which it's time I got off here and went and did something. Onwards and upwards.......
Hiya "Pink"
Good to have you post with us. I think we all sympathize with your reluctance to let go of things. Attaching a dollar value to "stuff" is the kiss of death to de-cluttering. Just remember that all those useless-to-you items are taking up valuable real estate. You have to store them, clean around them, feel guilty about not using them and so on. Passing them along means you can help out some other person who could make good use of them. Just jump in with both feet and start small....it gets easier with every bag or box you pass off. Like Kerri said, someone passed them off on you right?
That being said, I have to get onto packing stuff up for pickup on Thursday. I'm home all day today, so will see what I can accomplish. I wish this pickup group did furniture, but they don't. Just clothing and household items.
I'm slow moving as a result of a pulled back muscle(details are on the whimper/New You thread), but must get some things done around here today. Laundry is waiting, and the rest of the day I'm donating to de-junking.
I spent all of Saturday at the kids place helping them get the Christmas decor up. One very pregnant DIL laid out on the couch barking orders to two wine drinking mothers. It was an interesting time.
Yesterday I had no choice but to take advantage of some decent weather and rake up any remaining buildup of leaves. We're sure to get another snow any time now, and it will very likely stay this time. I only got 1/2 done before my back gave out, which is better than not doing any at all. Yes, I have a large yard to deal with. It took a little over 3 hours just to do my front yard, and I wasn't even raking the whole thing, just where the leaves had blown in and piled up. If it does snow now and I don't finish, I'll have a little cleanup to do in the back in the spring. I swear I don't know where these leaves came from. I raked twice already this fall.
Now then, I'd best go get dressed and get my shoes on as it's already after 10 and I've not done anything yet but drink coffee.
Later gals...hey....toss something today...it's Monday
.
Leave the leaves where they are
They rot down and fertilise the ground or something, don't they?
I didn't have a good night last night. There was an argument next door to which the police were called
It's usually very quiet around here
I'm not particularly bothered as this person is moving out on Friday anyway. I always found her okay though, she seems pleasant enough. I think she was having a row with her landlord. It did stop me from sleeping however and I finally dozed off about 2, only to wake up a couple of hours later with Cramps From Hell. I have never had them so bad in my life, I was in agony. Alright, slight exaggeration but I was in a lot of pain for a couple of hours which is how long it seemed to take for painkillers to kick in. Consequently I slept late and didn't get dressed until 2pm. I didn't even make it to tap class.
So THAT's my excuse for doing nothing today!
All I am intending to do this evening (it's 5pm now) is grocery shopping and putting out the trash.
Hope, when is your new grandbaby due? Do they know the sex?
Off to write my grocery list. I need to try and do a frugal one - for the next few weeks I am trying to shave money off the food budget to help out with the Christmas budget!
Hope
be careful with that back, because as much as you're saying you can't take the time now to rest it, you're gonna be even more ticked off if you end up completely bedridden for a few weeks because you wouldn't take a day or two off now. At your age I'd expect a little wisdom!
I'm supposed to be doing some morning pages because I've got to get to the kids' Chiense classes in less than an hour... oh hell! This would why I don't normally switch the computer on till after I'm done.
Kerri.
Clutter Be Gone
Well, I managed to get rid of quite a bit in my office today. Thanks for all of the advice everyone. I *know* these things, but it helps to hear them again. It really motivates me to get right to what I'm supposed to be doing.
I wasn't expecting to have major holiday company, so hadn't been too worried... but my Mother announced to everyone that I would be giving a tour of my new house after Thanksgiving dinner. So we are in a panic trying to finish half painted rooms, looking for Holiday decor, etc.
Hope- be careful with your back. My Dad's a Dr. and he says that the problem with back problems is that usually they aren't that bad, but people don't take care of it and rest and then they turn into bad back problems that never seem to go away. Besides, if you live where snow comes and stays that's definately a legitimate reason to not rake leaves. Also, if you have leaves under the snow it helps prevent bad slippery ice. Really, you are just doing yourself a disservice to rake them.
My husband and I live in a Townhouse, and don't have a yard. When we bought it we were so dissapointed to not get a "real" house with a big yard, etc. There was nothing available at the time and we only had two weeks to find something. Now I am counting my blessings big time on not having to take care of the yard. I have a teeny garden on my balcony that is perfect. We've resolved not to buy a house with a big yard until our not yet existent children are old enough to take care of it.
hope everyone had a great Monday... it can set the tune for the whole week!
Well said!!!
You go girl!! You hear that Hope??? Now pay attention and don't tell us you don't have time. I had a bad back as a teenager, and only extreme care while I was at university (including dragging my special back stool thing backwards and forwards with me every term!) has meant that my back is now no problem to me at all. The moment it twinges I am EXTREMELY careful. A friend of my parents had massive problems with slipped discs and stuff... he had to be off work for ages at a time. Back problems, like most other problems are not to be taken lightly.
I'd vote with everyone else on the leaves. You won't even see them under the snow which seems to hang around your area forever. Or get DH to rake them - it's a man's job!
On the other hand, I'm not sure I'd agree about not having a yard until your kids are much older. When you have them you may find you miss having somewhere completely safe for them to run around and let off steam, and somewhere you don't actually have to take them to or be present all the time at. Take it from someone who's been living in a flat for years with overactive kids who are now 8 and 6... Soon... soon... and then we'll have somewhere for them to run around properly like other kids can. I hate this dratted country some days!
I'm in the middle of burning dinner, so I'd better get back to that... Relax, it's only chicken curry, but it could do with a teensy bit of attention and some potatoes. Honey - I just chucked out a pack of curry paste that was in my cupboard. If you have any you haven't started yet, please look carefully at them and chuck if you're not sure. I can always send you some more.
Kerri.
You KNOW its gonna be a good day when....
...you flip on the TV and the first image you see is Jon BonJovi's backside!
(Where's the lascivious, drooling, smiley-icon?)
Welcome Pink! These gals are nothing if not motivating! Even on my worst days, someone will list a task that will make me think "I need to do that, too." I'm not even gonna think about clearing desk clutter just now, though....I'm in a research paper "crunch."
I have an exam in Middle Childhood and Adolescence this morning, so right now I'm focusing on that. I should be able to wrap up one paper tomorrow and finish the second one this week-end. (I sense a martini binge for the week-end after that!)
I have absolutely nothing to do for Thanksgiving...except show-up and eat!! I've had a couple of moments where I get that panicked feeling of, "I need to be doing something for the holiday!" Then I remember I have nothing to do! Weird!
Hope, do be careful with your back! You've got serious "grandmama duty" looming when the new arrival comes, right? You don't want to be out-of-commission for that!
I'm off to switch a laod of laundry and then get back to my study-notes. The test covers gender-roles and gender-identity in adolescents, self-esteem/self-concept development and adolescent sexuality. It's made for some really great conversations with the girls, especially with DD14. DH came home while DD14 and I were folding clothes and discussing STD's and birth control...poor guy..his neck gets all pink when he's embarassed, but to his credit, he's willing to contribute to the conversation....uncomfortable or not!
O-kay! I'm off!
Have a great day, friends!
Blessings,
Lenora

Catching up
Morning everyone
. I did pop on here the last couple of days and read posts, but was just too lazy to post myself.
For whoever it was that asked we are going to have a baby any day now. Actual due date is Dec 5-10, but it's been tricky for DIL to hold on this long, and we've had 2 false alarms already this week. Baby is in position and wanting out. This means I can't sit around in a state of personal disrepair as I like to. I have to be washed up with hair presentable for when the call comes to do granny duty.
Lenora, you are so hip. Bon Jovi eh?
I get excited when I turn on CNN in the morning(which I do every morning) and find Dr Sanjay Gupta on there first thing. That little revelation will have Kerri razzing me about my age again
.
My sympathies on the miserable Aunt Flo visit Honey. You should be over the worst of it by now I guess.
Thanks all of you for the back advice. It is much better now and is only twinging a little if I move the wrong way. I actually have a very strong back, and don't usually have issues with back problems. I think all the overcompensating I did for the knee injury this past month had me using muscles I would not normaly be using as much. I did treat it gently and got over the worst of it in a day.
About those leaves....how great it would be if I *could* just let them sit and decompose. Can't do that up north here. The leaves here are pretty thick, and if I left them on the grass they would kill it. The leaves would be sitting from Sept to May, by which time they'd be a sodden mess and the grass would be starving for air. The only good place to pile the leaves on is the garden and the flower beds, preferrably get them tilled in so they don't blow around. DH is not the best raker(won't do it my way) but he's great for bagging. I did the leaf piling, and he came out and did the bending and bagging for me.
Today is the junk pickup day. I have 5 large, full, heavy garbage bags of clothes and bedding ready to go, and 7 boxes of household items and Christmas decorations for them to take. I have it all outside by the front door, and expect them to pull up any minute now and cart it away. DH and I went through his closet and drawers last night and I must say, he did a good job letting go this time. Not without alot of complaining though. YES!!!!!! Finally the Speedo is out of here!!!! Why did he ever want to hang onto something he'd never be caught dead wearing?
Todays chores? I just don't know for sure yet. I do have some laundry on the go, and I should go to the city and look at another lighting store. Really though, all I want to do is sit here and play with my new watercolor set. Like I needed to pick up a new diversion right now(eye rolling guy). I had no idea watercolor would be so much fun. You should just see the picture I painted yesterday
.
Now I must go here and eat a wise breakfast before I perish. Us old gals(
) must get our bran on time ya know. Later all
.
Hi
No decluttering for me today, but then I have only just got home after 12 hours out of the house so it's not my fault
Tomorrow I am decluttering the egg that has been on my front windows since the night before Halloween. It's not visible from the street, only from inside the house, which is why I haven't got around to sorting it out yet! I have a telephone engineer coming soon and he may have to get up the front of the house so I want to clean it off beforehand. Well I can't have anyone realising what a slob I am, can I? What's the best thing to get egg off windows with, any suggestions?
Happy Thanksgiving to those who are celebrating today
I'm off to read and relax.
Honestly Hope!
You silly twit... this guy had back problems about 15yrs ago - he's actually had surgery done so he even managed to carry DS when he popped in for a flying visit. I was certainly NOT saying you're old enough to be my mother. And as for health... a deadbeat horse would be a better bet than me. But I'm very glad not to have a bad back on top of everything else!
At least that was one thing I've been able to control and overcome. I'm stuck wth the rest of this rubbish.
On that subject, which was already off topic... My mother's having the surgery done on Tuesday which will enable her to have her home dialysis. They're doing it now so they don't have to wait for it to be an emergency. Have I told you all this before?? Suddenly feels like I have. Anyway, her surgery's set for Tuesday. What I feel is probably slightly beyond concern or worry or sympathy, but considerably closer to empathy since I'm likely to be doing this myself in another 20yrs or so. As far as we can tell my disease started about 10yrs earlier than my mother's. I had this unpleasant vision at one point of myself with one bag for the kidney dialysis, and another for the bit where my intestines used to be, thanks to the Crohn's. Very humourous, in an extremely BLACK way.
Decluttering?? Umm... I have to sort out what presents I have, gather them into little groups so I can really see where I'm at. Definitely done with my SIL and a good way further on with the kids. I think DH and I aren't really buying each other anything, except that I'm doing him a stocking, for which I'm already well on the way. Have a nice CD for him too, which we'll both enjoy!
And I still feel a desperate urge to redesign the kids' room. And chuck some things out. Apparently Barbie's stay is officially over, so I can add her to the charity stash I didn't get out the last few days. Must see if there's anything else...
It's a dismal wet day out there and I want to hibernate more than ever.
Kerri.
Hibernation
I am feeling like I want to hibernate, too. Which is making it diffic ult to go out and do the Christmas shopping - I just don't wanna
I am having trouble getting out of bed lately too. I've been getting up about 10 quite often, including today, which throws my whole day out as I end up not dressed until midday. I've been going to bed about 2 though, so I guess that's why. I need to go to bed earlier, obviously. I am still not very good at that.
I had a bad back as a youngster too - which I put down to a bout of what I now think was pleurisy, when I was 11. For years afterwards I had trouble, and lugging around all those school books in a huge shoulder bag didn't help. No lockers at my school! (Or any schools I know over here, for that matter).
How long will your Mum be in hospital Kerri, or is it a day thing? It can't be nice for her looking forward to the op, but it will be so much better to have her dialysis at home than in the hospital.
I guess I should go and DO something, as its' now 11.20. My friend is coming over this evening and I have a suspicion you might bring her new boyfriend, so I think I'll dust and hoover. I've a big pile of ironing too, and a load of egg to remove from the windows
Have a nice day
Aftermath!
Well, as far as major holiday's go...Thanksgiving was acutally rather disconcerting! We slept in...then went to my mother's for dinner at 12:30 pm. She did all the cooking. My sister took the girls for a sleepover with my niece, so DH and I came home to an empty house...much too calm and relaxed to qualify as a holiday!
You all know that I certainly don't go out on the Friday after Thanksgiving...but DH braved the chaos at 5:30 am to get something-or-another at one of the electronic/computer stores...he was up, out, home, and back in bed without my even noticing! SNORE!!!!!!! I didn't get up until almost 11:00 am and still haven't had a shower!
I'm going to be at the computer most of the rest of the day...and probably most of tomorrow, too. Once I get my two papers done, I have one more assignment (not due for another week) that I'd love to have out of the way!
I did get my laundry room completely cleaned/decluttered the other day. Walls, woodwork, washer/dryer, storage, every bit! Since that is our main entrance...the floor is always a mess....rugs are no help, either! I got everyone's winter hats/gloves/scarves out and organized...and a good thing, too. We woke up on Thursday to a beautiful layer of white over everything! It only amounted to about an inch....and the hard surfaces were too warm for it to stick there. IMHO, it was the perfect "first" snow! Enough to be pretty....but no shovels needed!
My sister just called...kiddos enroute! I need to hop in the shower!
Happy Friday, all!
Blessings,
Lenora

Quick checkin
Breezing through here. I've been busy at the kids place the last couple of days helping them catchup with the laundry. DIL can't do stairs or bend over right now, and we can't trust DS with laundry duty(does not ubderstand seperation o colors), so I did it for them. I hope this baby comes soon.
Nothing happened around my house tody except that my DH is happy (
) and I made one heck of a supper.
: *AND*......I drank waaaaay too much wine.
Oh brother!!!!
Check the typos. That's what happens when you drink too much.
But I can hear the sunshine
- it comes right through your post Hope! Hope you haven't got a hangover to spoil the fun!
I have my Christmas tree UP! It currently has only two strings of lights on it... but it is up, which is a huge start. We went to my in-laws yesterday (cake-cutting for DS' birthday on Wednesday), then came back and had quite a looong nap. Scrambled together some canned soup for dinner (we only had lunch at 3pm thanks to my in-laws screwing things up - DH was really pissed!) and then went back to bed after some reading and computer games. This morning I drove DH to work so he didn't have to borrow the car from his father while I take ours - did I tell you he was pissed at them?!?
Then in another 15mins I have to take the kids to their classes, so I have two days of having the car in which to finish all of DS' birthday presents and the majority of Christmas presents. Last class tomorrow, so if I want the car again I shall probably have to beg. No, DH is off somewhere again apparently, but by then I don't really want to be venturing into the crowds, even midweek.
My SIL's gifts are officially done. DH now doesn't want to buy anything for his parents... did I mention... yeah, maybe I did...
The kids have advent calendars and new Christmas books and I have the one remaining Christmas album I have been itching for for years (but which didn't exist!) - surprisingly enough, Cliff Richard. Hell, even my mother was shocked on that one, but DH knew. Even before I shoved his nose in it, told him to buy it and then walked off! I even did my SIL's Christmas shopping this weekend. In exchange for her looking after the kids for 5 long hrs. A change is as good as a rest!
And for the record, the house looks like it was hit by this morning's earthquake on Hokkaido. It wasn't, but it's got that look! My charity drop bags made it into the car too thanks to DH - isn't he a wonderful guy!
Now we'll actually be able to see the Christmas tree, when it's worth looking at!
I have to go look at the other threads in my remaining 5mins or so.

Busy times make for one crazy woman
That would be me....slowly but surely losing my mind(insert crazy hair pulling face here).
DS, DIL, and MIL consumed a great part of this past weekend. I have granny duty for about 1 1/2 hours early this aft and again early tomm morning. DIL's Dr appts and ultrasounds are coming fast and furious. Let this baby come *now*...please. It's only a week off due date anyway.
Syds second birthday is on the 11th. DH and I went out and found her a pony(not a real one). Shes been trying to ride the dog, and the ornamental cat table, so we thought a rocking horse would be a good idea now. It's a hoot. It makes gallping sounds when you ride it. It talks, it whinnys, and it sings a real stupid song. And it's *loud*! DS is going to kill us for this one. I can hardly wait
. She's going to love it
. I phoned over last night and interrupted DS's football on TV. When he answered the phone I had the horse sing the song to him then I hung up. He did not phone back...HA HA....that means he's disgusted...HA HA.
My new house is causing me some headaches at this stage. Too long a story to go into, but I'll have some of the issues dealt with by the end of this week. Sheesh, I know what I want, why can't those contractors make it work?
Kerri, if I'm not mistaken today will be surgery day for your mom. I'm sure all will go well. My thoughts are with you(and her). AND...I think driving anywhere in Singapore should be considered a days work don't you? My hats off to you, I could never drive there.
I need to go to bed earlier too Honey. It's hard though, when one really enjoys those late night hours.
Sounds like you had a nice break this Thanksgiving Lenora. You deserved a couple of days like that in your schedule. Only thing that would have made it better is if you could have spent your free time watching movies instead of turning out papers.
OK then, I can't put off making these phone calls any longer. If I want floors in my new house I need to get those guys straightened out today.
Have a great and productive Monday all(Tues to you Kerri)
.
Completion!
Sheesh! Am I glad to have those papers done! I think I've permanently damaged the nerves in my behind from too many hours in a hard chair! I told DH that an ergonomic and soft computer chair would make a great Christmas gift for me!!!
I actually still have to format the reference page for the big paper...and depending on how I feel, I may add a bit of "fluff" to the smaller one...but the worst is over!
I learned one interesting fact this week-end....when all my laundry is done, we don't have enough hangers for our clothes! Blessed, to be sure, with such obnoxious abundance..I need to do a going-through of the closets, I think! I've got the DDS' bedding in the laundry process, with mine done on Saturday.
I did get my holiday garland and bows hung on the deck.. Since we live on the front corner of a cul-de-sac, my closest neighbors (and my friends) have a clear, but boring view of the backside of my house (we face the main street, not the circle). I like to have some decorations that way! I was hoping to have DH pull the rest of the decor out of the basement and put it in MIL's former room, but he didn't get to it. I may bring up a bit at a time, but since he's out-of-town until Wed. the heavier boxes (my Christmas dishes) will have to wait.
Kerri,I'll be saying prayers for your MIL...and for your DIL, Hope. May all go well (and quickly on the new baby for Hope).
I LOVE the rocking horse, Hope! It's such a "grandmama-gift!"
Good-luck of the house plans. I'm sorry it's such a chore to keep up with all of that!
I must be off...first to change a load of sheets, then back to this chair-of-torture to finish the reference page.
Blessings,
Lenora
Been busy.
Decluttering like a madwoman! Getting to some home projects with DH, so no real computer time lately. I don't know, hope we stay married through the 1/2 bath addition, ha ha! He is such a guy. I see things a little farther down the line, try to explain how we could do something differently, you can guess how that goes over. SO, while we're trying to get so much done we're just getting rid of things left and right. Pretty good feeling. I'll try to check in more, he's back at work this week so I have some goof off time.

Drum kit
That's what I got my cousin's daughter one year for Christmas. She loved it! Boy, was I popular with her parents that year
still Monday
looking at Hope's comment I now know why it's still Monday here too... Woke up to a call from my SIL (who was in the kitchen!) asking if DH could take the day off to take their father to the doctor. I drove him over there and my FIL isn't in great shape - he's complaining of giddiness, and he's all over the place just walking across the room. Since it's been going since last night we're thinking that low blood pressure seems unlikely. That was our first thought. Fingers crossed it's something minor that can be rectified easily, but I'm not sure I trust their doctor - I don't think he's yet diagnosed properly on my FIL's knee problems, since the problems haven't been reduced even the tiniest bit and the only 'medication' my FIL is taking is glucosamine. I urged DH to go in with him if possible since I don't trust the doctor!
And yes, Tuesday is Mum's surgery. It's relatively minor I think, but if you've never had any surgery I strongly suspect that any surgery is major! Mention of pethidine had her running scared - she is not a naturally nervous person, so it was well hidden. She's supposed to only be in there for the day, but I can't call her the next day because by the time she's likely to be receiving calls we'll be out celebrating DS' birthday. I've set up a few e-cards to keep her going!
Hope... DS was due on December 3rd and arrived on the 1st - I'd been expecting him much earlier since DD was a week early. In some ways it's quite good because DD gets her advent calendar and Christmas book that day anyway, so there's less fuss over only one child getting things! The last week or so is always the hardest for all concerned I reckon. Anyway, I wish your DIL a swift and fuss-free delivery, and not one that requires everyone suddenly relocate at awkward times.
what thread are we on?? Decluttering?? You've gotta be joking! We wrapped DS' birthday presents last night and decided that a 6yr old should probably have some kind of toy or game in the mix, even though we know that his favourite present will be the science book which is an extension of the one he's been dragging around for a year. He has a science book, a science quiz (except Mummy didn't see the age when she grabbed it in front of them, so maybe DS6 isn't quite ready for the 9yr old quiz!), plenty of stickers, a sticker album for his Chinese class next year (for primary school level they have stickers for good behaviour and stuff), umm... the film of Mary Poppins (he was actually asking for it a few days before we found it for $4!), a glass with Winnie the Pooh on it (like his sticker album and the film he's watching now!). Not the best haul ever. He's also got his Christmas book which has a Christmas tree on the front with flashing lights on it, and his advent calendar. Think I still need to do some work this morning. My SIL will get all the glory otherwise, with the junior novelisation of The Incredibles that I found and offered to her, and the two soft toys I found for the kids, and offered when she said she had promised them soft toys anyway. Really didn't want to overdo it! A few Spiderman stickers and pencils aren't going to work against those, even if I chose them.
Oh crap... haven't finished the thing I was making for him. I totally forgot about it in the last few days. My father made a little sign of his name at my request, but despite spending absolutely ages on perfecting it, what he came up with was a tiny sign literally of his name, with joined writing. It's a bit fragile, so I have finally gotten a backing plaque, slappd some gorgeous metallic periwinkle blue paint on it, painted a gold star, and will glue both the star and the name to the plaque so DS has something a little more solid. Not sure where we'll put it after that, but it's a start!
And I have to send an e-card to DS' godfather whose birthday is today. It's rather creepy but all three godparents were born on the 30th of one month or another... March, June and November. It took us about 5yrs to notice!
Kerri.
Hello Everyone ~
Thank-You Kerri for my mystery gift! It was driving me buggy trying to figure out who had sent such a lovely gift. Thank-You so much. I have tried to email you to no avail. We keep having troubles with a highjacker virus ~ so a lot of people have not been hearing from me ~ who I thought were hearing from me and then just being quiet...
I hope to have my email up and running again, soon. Probably a new address in the works which will be a "keeper" address. I will send along word to you about how adjustments, etc. have gone ~ like I said... I thought you had gotten my mails but were just really, really busy.
And I forgot my password here. LOL

Luckily I had it written down in my day planner.
So I am back...
I think.
Good call Honey to send Kerri to my other online spot.
She found me. Thank-You.
I will catch up on posts in the morning ~

I just wanted to wave a hello to everyone.
(Good to see you Karin!)
And Hope... LOL and Lenora...
and, well... all of you!!
Love,
Cari
Hi Cari
Great to see you!
Time-wasting
I was scrabbling all over the place at that other site trying to trace you and you were here all along!
Glad it's an email problem... nothing worse than wondering what on earth you've said this time to make someone go quiet!
And I finally filled in the info on that book you sent me... only took me... how many months??
I have an aftermath list of my own to work through now that DS' birthday has passed, and top of that list should be the bills that are probably overdue by now. Dontcha just love that! And finishing decorating - that poor naked Christmas tree still has only two strings of lights on it. Have to get the kids ready for their new school year just after Christmas too, and wrap certain presents - all my SIL's since I'm finished with her, and my nephew since his father's in the country for a few days - saves postage. Speaking of which... Honey - give up this year. It isn't really going to get out in time, not even for Easter. It'd probably be quicker if I hand carry it over in June for goodness' sakes!
So clearing up will have to get done if I'm to achieve anything else!
good to see you surfacing Cari...
Kerri.
Kerri...
*Chuckle*
I know the truth.
You really have been drinking!
I am about to go out of my mind over here waiting for election results... It is weird being over here with everything going on over there. Our news here has not been studded with the election coverage ~ so I am getting my news updates online. Which was what I was doing when I popped in over here ~ and then had to comment.
I still have to do my morning pages...
then I will come online here and report my progress, etc.
I am a figment of your imagination...
I did not post out a comment with so much to do.
No sir.
Not me...
(I have joined Kerri in the drinking fest ~ could you tell?)
... And don't even get me started on the Anglo/American translation subject! Sheesh... sometimes it is amazing to me that we are even speaking the same language!!

LOL
Cari
(Really, I am going to start working, NOW...)
Right after a cup of coffee...
Gosh i messed up this post
Gosh i messed up this post
Just popped in lurking...
I guess we never get too old to be pleased by a "good job" from our moms!
Isn't that the truth!
Glad the dinner went good. Tears are always good!
Re: I'm baaackkk
Honey~You were truely missed. Gobsmacked. I try to use that 2x today. I smiled. Glad to hear about the tremendous blessing
from your Auntie.
As to decluttering without computer...You may have done alot, but where's the satisfaction and pride after you post.
I have very glad to see your name up in the forums.

"bodysuits"
That's what I always heard them called. But they went out of fashion right about when they stopped looking good on me. Fern says they were popular in the 70s but they had a renaissance when I was in college, in the nineties; I never see my fashion-plate students wear them though, so they must be out.
