My friends son was really ill all over DS13's bed and carpet last night Sad

I have washed the carpet four times with cold water and disinfectant but it still smells of vomit. Any ideas?

Baking Soda

Submitted by Anna on Sat, 08/21/2004 - 1:27pm.

When DD8 threw up all over her carpet, I cleaned up the solids and then sprinkled baking soda over the spot. It absorbs odors. I vacuumed it up the next morning. You may also try to use some Carpet Fresh deodrant powder made for pet odors (I think, it also contains baking soda). I treated the remaining stain with some carpet shampoo. Everything, including the smell, came out (I just went to sniff her carpet to make sure Smiling )

Good luck!

I have put baking soda on it and will vacuum it up later. There is no stain (dark blue carpet) so at least I don't have that problem. Hopefully the smell will be all gone. I'll keep you posted!

Thanks Smiling

still smelly!

I left the baking soda overnight and then vacuumed it up but the carpet still smelled! I shampooed the carpet and that seems to have reduced the smell somewhat, but it is still there. I think I will shampoo it again later and then maybe try one of those scented powders that you can vacuum up.

I am getting very depressed about this! DS has a lovely carpet and I really don't want to/can't afford to replace it Sad

Sorry!

DD8 threw up on the carpet the week before summer break (mid May). I didn't sniff the carpet until August... There is absolutely no smell now so don't give up hope yet! (Our carpet was treated with some Stainmaster stuff, though, and that might have helped keep a lot of the stink out. When the carpet was new, it completely repelled liquids. They just puddled up on top.)

Another idea

I found some carpet stain remover stuff and although there isn't a stain, I though I'd try it. Ther stuff has a really strong chemical smell which is actually preferable to the vomit, and maybe when the chemical smell fades so will the vomit smell. Maybe....

To add insult to injury, a visiting seven year old pooped herself at my house today and I didn't realise until she had gone home. I could smell a poopy kind of smell, and tracked it down to the two chairs in my living room on which she had been sitting. Out came the chemicals again....

This happened to me last year with another child too. WHY is it always me?? Sad I do have a really strong sense of smell, so it's worse for than me than other people, too. Feeling sorry for myself and my smelly house? Yup! Big grin

pet supply shops

If that carpet stain remover doesn't work, try a pet supply shop-- they should have some things to help with "pet odors" that would also help with human odors. There is also petplanet.co.uk, although it is virtually impossible to get off their mailing list once you are on it.

continuing the saga.......

The child who threw up in DS' room the other day came over today and after he left, DS noticed.... a patch of BLOOD on his bed! I'ts circular and a couple of inches across and has soaked right through all the bedding. I rang the boy's mother and she thinks either it must have been his nose or she said he has a nasty scab on his leg that he may have picked.

Upstairs smells of vomit and downstairs smells of poop.....

I am beginning to feel persecuted!

I am thinking of having a sign made for my front door 'Please keep all bodily fluids to oneself' Big grin

You could buy space suits in

You could buy space suits in assorted sizes for your guests to put on at the door.

Vomit in carpet

Submitted by Julie B (not verified) on Sun, 04/13/2008 - 6:30am.

My 2 year old son threw up on the carpet and we immediately got out the carpet cleaner. It still smells terrible. Is it too late to put baking powder on it to freshen it up? I am kicking myself for jumping to the carpet cleaner because with my cats I always get out the baking powder first. Any suggestions for me when I have done things in the wrong order?

Thank you.
