Free Public Schooling - well, not quite
http://www.usd469.net/~bts/_sgt/m2_1.htm
This is our local school district. Our "free" local schooling is going to cost some money!
Various fees included:
Textbook rental fees ranging from $30 to $55 per student depending on grade
Lab fees of $5-10
Band/Choir fees of $25
Sport fee of $15-25 per sport played
Drama fee of $25
There is a long list of fees.
We want to be active and participate, but we want you to pay for it!
So, what is it my taxes are going to pay for? How many thousands of dollars are they getting per student per year, and they still charge parents these fees?
We have homeschooled for years, but this year, we are putting five of our kids into public school so I can concentrate on my dyslexic child. With these kinds of fees, it would be cheaper to homeschool them all!

Nita, My son is also dysle
Nita,
My son is also dyslexic. He is taught in the Wilson Reading Method. Have you heard of it? What is your child's situation? My son attends public school and is doing very well. I hope you have a successful public school experience.

Tell me more!
Heidi,
I haven't heard of the Wilson Reading Method. Joelle has been tutored with Linda-Mood Bell and Orton Gillingham. I'm using Audiblox with her now. She is making constant strides, so I'm not really worried, but I want to give her all she needs. We just moved to KS and there is a person who does therapy that is supposed to help, so we will look into that also.
I'm pretty comfortable with her reading right now, so this year I really want to concentrate on her writing and spelling. She is 4th grade and should make great strides.
Oh, and some other things we've used this past year: Sound Reading Systems and . . . gee, I can't remember the name. Oh yeah! It's Sopris West's REWARDS. It's a program to help them break down multisyllable words and be able to read them. That has helped so much.
In fact, Joelle is reading the first Harry Potter book right now. She would have never tackled a book like that before. But she's reading it and enjoying it immensely!
