Spirited Away

As we were last night! We watched this excellent Japanese animated film, about a little girl who accidentally stumbles upon the spirit world with her parents during a move to a new home. Her parents are enchanted by eating food left for the spirits, and the little girl, Jihiro, must find courage within herself to set them free from the spell. The animation was beautiful! I think there are some cultural differences that don't make the translation in these sorts of films, so it's fun to jump in with both feet and go for the ride. Smiling I don't know if it's suitable for young children. I might let my older girls see it. 2yo J.D. was up accidentally for just a few minutes of it (after falling out of bed and not settling down), and at one point during a scene with a fire-breathing witch, he stated calmly, "Scary." He didn't seem upset by it, though, and went right back to sleep.

I can't believe I don't have this film listed!

Miyazaki-san is BRILLIANT, and one of our favorite filmmakers. "Spirited Away" is his masterpiece, an awe-inspiring tour de force that works for adults and children alike. Josie and Lou have seen it (after we previewed it) and in spots they cuddle close to me but they don't seem overly traumatized. The story has a moral--several, actually--but doesn't pound it over your head, and toward the end I always get weepy, but they're happy tears.

In fact, I want to watch it now! I'm going to see if I can talk the girls into letting me watch it. Smiling I'm going to put this in the listings. Watch the top right Review box; it'll pop up in a sec.

Do I review by posting a comment under your review?

Sorry for the dumb question; just making sure that's how I do it. Smiling I did search the site before posting a journal entry because I thought it might be a movie of your liking & might already be here.

yes, just make a comment

Submitted by Lynn on Tue, 01/27/2004 - 2:20pm.

That's how you review anything here; just add a comment. I'd love it if y'all would start reviewing things. Some of you already have; Shaun reviewed some of her book suggestions, and I've reviewed some items. I'm getting books from publishers now and will be able to write reviews without buying books now! (We love that.) That's how I ended up writing the review for the new edition of "Your Pregnancy Week by Week" when I'm 99.999999% sure there are no pregnancies in my future, or at least til my next life. Smiling
