May not be chicken pox!?

Submitted by Ameeqt on Sat, 06/12/2004 - 10:40am.

DD4 was diagnosed with chicken pox yesterday. This morning when she woke up the "chicken pox" looked like an angry red rash more than the bumps associated with c.p. so I looked online to try to figure out when they would raise and blister. Everything I read told me that they should already have raised and turned into blisters. I called the nurse line connected to my HMO and they thought at first it may be a "side effect" of the antibiotics she's on from last weeks sore throat. Than the nurse said that she didnt think it had to do with any medicine she is on but that she would have pediatrics call me back because she didnt want me taking her anywhere if she was contagious.

After all this, I have made a decision to only give her the benedryl, Completely stop giving her the Amoxocylin (sp?)(antibiotic), and I am debating weather I should stop giving her the Zovirax, which is a new medicine that shortens the life of many viral diseases, herpes, chicken pox,
shingles....etc.

I feel completely clueless, frusterated, and Im starting to get angry. These damn doctors want to treat her symptoms not the cause of the symptoms. They just keep giving me more stupid medicine!! Meanwhile DD is itchy and cant wear any clothes besides underwear because everything makes her skin irritated. Thank God she is otherwise healthy and has no fever.
She just happens to look like an alien.

If anyone has any ideas on what this could be or what I should "look" into I would really appreciate it!

DD had chicken pox in Kinderg

Submitted by Fern on Sat, 06/12/2004 - 1:27pm.

DD had chicken pox in Kindergarten. Little brother started to break out a bit later and the doctor gave him Zovirax. It stopped them on him right then, but a couple years later he was exposed and caught them. I'm wondering if the Zovirax is what caused them to not break into blisters.

You really need to check with the doctor before discontinuing stuff on your own. Especially with antibiotics. . they tell you to finish the entire dose. Not sure, but I think it builds up immunity to the antibiotic if you do that. . . where the antibiotics may not work well in future.

Seems like a whole lot of medicine for a little kid. I gave mine benadryl to stop the itching, tylenol to stop the fever and the doctor told me to do lukewarm baths to soothe. I made it a point to not let the benadryl run out on them. Seems harder to stop the itch once it gets going.

Hope she is better soon.

Fern is right on the antibiot

Fern is right on the antibiotics-- the kid doesn't develop immunity to antibiotics, the bacteria develop an immunity, but of course antibiotics do need to be stopped when there is a reaction.

Update!

DD does not have chicken pox. She has hives.! She is allergic to amoxocillin! I finally (after waiting all day) talked to a dr and explained my concerns and told her that I didnt think it was chicken pox because none of them had blistered and by the time she called the had started getting redder and had spread from bumps to large 1 dollar bill size patches. So now she is on benadryl only! I havent given her any antibiotic since Friday night and she is much better. They are almost all gone!! Smiling
Thank you for your advise. I am sad that she doesnt have chicken pox. We had a chicken pox party in the making for early this week.
Some girlfriends with children who havent had them where going to come over and keep her company! And I was happy to get them out of the way when the kids where so young.
DS13 has been exposed tons of times and never got them. DS10 got them at 5 months old, DS9 never had them and neither has DD4. I got them at 14 and I didnt get really sick just really itchy!
DD had no fever or anything. I guess my gut was telling me to stop the antibiotic. I knew something was up. I usually dont stop the antibiotic (or any medicine) early. I'm just glad its over and we found the root of it all!
You guys are the best!!
Thanks again

amox

Submitted by kittycat45 on Sun, 06/13/2004 - 7:47pm.

my DD2 at the time had to have amox.. and she got the same reaction. We have pictures of her with hives the size of tennis balls. I too had to do the benadryl, and cool baths. She was not otherwise affected too much so that helped.

my Dr. says that a child can "outgrow" the allergy. I am not sure of this as only once or twice since then have we had to put her on anything [shes 13 now] and we used a different antibiotic. Thank goodness there are ones to choose from.

just a suggestion,,,,,,I bought her one of those braclets to wear that say she is allergic. I thought in case I am not there in an emergency she would not receive any 'bad stuff'. You can get them at a drug store or hospital supply store.

also be prepared to have to write it down a zillion times for school medical forms,,even field trips

glad all is well now

Mommy instincts are usually correct.

My DD8 had a horrible case of hives a few weeks ago. We never could determine what had caused them. She was one big hive, head to toe. They started while we were staying at a hotel, so it must have been something there.
