Super-Size Me

Man nearly kills himself in only 30 days on all-McDonald's diet: This guy ate nothing but McDonalds and chronicled the effects on his health and waistline in a documentary, "Super-Size Me." In a month he gained 30 lbs, raised his cholesterol by nearly 50 points and damaged his liver.

Note that I am not a vegetarian; in fact, I used to advocate a low-fat, low-meat lifestyle and after all the research I've done I now cannot advocate either vegetarianism or low-fat eating (with the caveat: to each her own). But Standard American Diet abbreviates as SAD for a reason, folks. However you choose to eat, make it yourself out of fresh, whole foods.

OMG!

What an absolutely stupid thing to do! I suppose he feels it's a necessary sacrifice for the sake of "art." Although it rather reminds me of performance artists who hang themselves up by flesh hooks for the viewing pleasure of others.

It certainly couldn't be for the sake of informing the public, because...well, I mean, who out there *doesn't* know that fast food is bad for you? C'mon, raise your hand! I don't know why he singled out McD's. Greasy food is greasy food. You could get the same results going down to Jolene's Catfish House for supper every night. Them hush puppies is deep fat fried, you know. Smiling

I learned about the dangers of fast food decades ago...from Randy Stonehill! LOL!

American fast food, order me the chili fries..."

Well, yeah, everyone knows that it's BAD for you, buT DAMN! I didn't think it was TOXIC! LITERALLY! That's more than just fatty food...

As long as the fat is "good" fat (lard, tallow, coconut oil, palm oil) you'll be MUCH better off at the Catfish House! But you know I'm weird on the fat issue.

Oh yeah, especially the french fries...

...I heard a report maybe a year ago on public radio about the serious health threat in fries, potato chips, even bread or cereals like Cheerios. They have substances that can form acrylamides in the system, which researchers believe can lead to cancer:

But that's not necessarily a McDonald's-centered issue. People have an obligation to educate themselves. Caveat emptor! Seems like this guy is trying to boost the fat-suits coming out of the woodwork these days.

I am actually looking forward to seeing what sort of information the guy collected, so I can share it with family/friends who still make many unwuse eating choices. I am also reading the book :Fast Food Nation" right now, which is a very interesting history and expose of fast-food restaurants and American diet choices. I haven't gotten very far into it yet, but I'll share my comments after I've finished, if anyone's interested.

Our family has been trying really hard to not eat out, mostly for budget reasons. When we do eat out, we've been trying to get healthier things, like Togo's sandwiches or Mongolian BBQ. It costs a little more than McDonald's, but our family's health is sure worth the sacrifice!
