A couple of different ways

One way:

Get your basket of socks with holes. Examine the first sock. Say, "Darn!" and throw it in the trash. Repeat til basket is empty.

The other way (preferred for handmade socks, for instance).

Now Honey....

You know I have no earthly idea what to do with a darning mushroom other than frame it Sticking out tongue .

Seeing as how these are special hand knitted sox I can understand you wanting to save them spiden. Don't pay any attention to the other mending methods that some of us employ Eye-wink .

Hand knitted socks

If I had hand knitted socks I would want to mend them, too! I have to learn how to knit 'em, first.....it's taking me a long time to graduate from dishcloths and teacosies! Smiling

knitting socks

Lyn that is a good book on knitting socks. I think knitting socks are easier than knitting a sweater and they take less time to knit than a scarf.
I have a really simple and easy pattern for a larger gauge sock made with worsted weight yarn that can be worn around the house to keep your tooties warm in the winter. I have do some searching in my pattern box but when I find it, I will post it. Smiling

a variation on Lynn's "darn" toss meathod....

and its practical too!

if you have a puppy (or a cat that like to tug), tie the socks with a knot or two and then rub it with something that smells doggy (so it dosnt smell like your other socks and the puppy can tell them apart). then you have a free toy for you puppy to play tug with (and leave your shoe laces alone!)

Thank You

That was a great website, very informative.
I made my family knitted socks awhile ago and a few of them are starting to get worn spots and one has a hole.

socks are easy, honest

Find a good book like Folk Socks and a local sock knitter to show you in person how to turn a heel, but even if you can't find a live person you can learn to do this. I taught myself from a book. Children in the Fair Isles used to turn out a pair a day whilst walking around doing their chores. It ain't that hard!
