Josie Joins the Sorority

Today, my friends, is a milestone in my life: I taught Josie how to knit and she actually got it. I made her a little pair of needles out of doweling and blue wooden beads and she picked out some pink cotton dishcloth yarn. She quickly picked up slip knots and casting on and I taught her "the rabbit goes into his hole, puts on his scarf, comes out of the hole and hops away!" Josie laboriously knit her way through two whole rows of garter stitch before deciding that was enough for one day. She is now, like any good knitter, carting her little workbasket with her around the house. I have been waiting for this moment since I was a little girl myself. I'm verklempt! Sob!

Congratulations...
to Josie and to mommy, too!
I'm a little embarrassed...
I'm 32 years old and have tried twice to learn to knit (using two different videos) and both times I was UNsuccessful!!! Your daughter is HOW old??? Maybe there's still hope for me. Congratulations to Josie!!!

I love it
I am so happy to hear that people still teach their children things like knitting. I too have taught both my DDs to knit. One yr we made washcloths for their teachers and grandmas. It is something you can do just about anywhere. When you are done you have something useful and they have fun along the way.
there was a bit on tv that showed a grade school that taught knitting at recess. This was to the boys and girls. All grades. It was so cool to see these kids get into knitting. They have the choice of going out for recess or staying in and knitting. They have gym period so exercise is still done. 90 %[or so if I remember right] of the kids stay inside to knit. They asked this boy would you rather play PS2 or knit,,,he said knit.
It is also calming to the children and I am sure this can help the teacher.
too bad not all schools offer this lovely craft
Lynn when I saw this at first I thought you were going to tell us Josie had begun her cycles...forget how old she is
My mom has tried to teach me
My mom has tried to teach me to knit multiple times but I have yet to get it. Maybe next time.
Aw!
I wish you could teach me too Lynn!
My mom taught me to crochet a chainstitch long ago 'way back when, but alas, none of us is a knitter.
