Medical question, please read

jamielea's picture

I guess I'm looking for someone who's felt this way, or know's someone who has....
About 2 weeks ago I was talking on the phone when I started having a weird feeling in my ears, sort of like I stopped being able to hear or something, then I got dizzy. It wasn't anything major
But this morning I was sitting watching TV and my ears started ringing, I felt dizzy, a little nauseous. I started to walk upstairs where DH was and as I was walking upstairs I started feeling really off balance, bumping into the walls and such. I got upstairs and sat on the bed in front of the fan and it felt like the room was spinning upside down. This is as close to feeling like I was dying as I've ever felt.
I've had slightly high blood pressure for the last couple months, and also am prone to gestational diabetes, I had that with DS6 and just failed my first 1 hour test with this pregnancy. I called my Dr. and I'm supposed to go in today at 3 to see him.
My question, it's only 11, DH is at work now, and both the older boys are at school. I'm getting a little scared about being here by myself with DS6 and it happening again? Anyone ever feel this way??

when you press on your leg lets say what color is your skin?
when you let go ?

I had near toxic[ya know the one you can get when you are pregnant] what ever and they checked my skin that way.

also how fast were you moving?? did you stand up too fast and the blood RUSHED to your head?? I was told that sometimes the baby can be blocking vessels and then when you move the pressure is off

please let us know you are OK

Get seen now

I see you're not on the site right now, so I'm sure that you're probably taking care of this, but do let us know how you are asap.

I had one instance during this last pregnancy that seems simliar to what you are describing. I got up in the night headed for the bathroom and just about passed out. I had that same feeling in the ears, same wave of nausea, shakiness, weakness, & wondered if it were high blood pressure. But if it was, the BP was normal with the next checkup. Maybe it just spiked for a minute. It happened only once.

Thanks everybody :) I'm home

jamielea's picture

Thanks everybody Smiling I'm home from the Dr's office with orders to check into the hospital this afternoon for 48hours of observation. My blood pressure was 161/98 and I'm not sure about my pulse but he said it was too high. I asked if I could just be on bed rest at home, but he wants to run these tests so looks like that's what I'm going to do. I'm freakin out a little as this will be the very first time I'll be away from DS6 overnight, ever. As much as I hate to go, I'd hate even worse to ever feel the way I did this morning so hopefully they can fix this quick and I'll be home by the end of the weekend. Thanks again for all your advice and I'll let you all know what's up when I get home. Smiling

hope it's just high bp

Becky's picture

That's high but still low enough for docs to bring down quickly and easily. Good luck!

Sending warm thoughts your way

This must have been a terrifying experience for you, Jamie Lea. I hope they get a quick handle on things for you.
Best wishes

Better safe than sorry

Cliché I know, but for a reason! No point taking chances during pregnancy because there's all sorts of stuff happening. I remember that high blood pressure can be linked to eclampsia, but haven't a clue what the other symptoms are like for that!

take care, and take a good book if you can... and socks. Why is that hospitals are so cold!?! Fingers crossed it's nothing. Don't worry about DS6 - he'll be fine. Let him see it as an adventure, like camping without the tent since it's just the boys shifting for themselves for once!

Hospitals are cold because the doctors and nurses get hot, since they wear lab coats and run around all day.

Be Well, Jamie!

I'm glad you're going in for observation. That's a pretty high BP. (Can someone remind a forgetful old woman how far along Jamie is?) I will be very surprised if you don't get put on bed rest for the duration, Jamie. Perhaps we should think about a care package, gang. Having been on bed rest (for nearly three months!) I know first hand how miserable it can be. Maybe we can find a local postpartum doula to come in a couple days a week and chip in towards her? Oh well, that's skipping ahead!

Something to consider, keeping in mind that I Am Not A Doctor: If you are diagnosed with pre-eclampsia (even if you're not), please consider the Brewer Diet. I followed it during my toxemia/pre-eclampsia/pregnancy-induced high blood pressure with Josie, and instead of a 31-week preemie (what Dr Pete expected) I had a 37-week full term baby. We would have gone all 40 weeks because I was stable that whole time, but Dr Pete was getting really really nervous that I'd go eclamptic; he'd never had someone diagnosed so early with toxemia (29 weeks) hold on to a baby that long.

Also consider taking epsom salt baths. Some alternative health care folks (and some regular ones) believe magnesium deficiency contributes to toxemia. I won't tell you to take magnesium supplements, but I will tell you to take a bath with tons of epsom salts. Your body will absorb just the magnesium it wants from the water, and it feels good too. Actually, most people are magnesium deficient; I suggest everyone try it. I feel better with more magnesium, pregnant or no.

Prayers going up for Jamie!

If you could use a doula, let us know, Jamie.

I just got home,

jamielea's picture

after much begging and promises to my Dr. I didn't sleep at all last night, I just couldn't get comfy and someone was coming in every 15 minutes. The Dr did lots of tests while I was there and I'll come back soon to catch you all up on all of it. The good news is my baby GIRL Smiling looks great.
The bad news...I am on bed rest now, and failed my 3 hr. glucose test miserably. I expected I would but was still holding out for a miracle. I'll start seeing the Dr. weekly or more now, and I'll also be taking medication for the BP, and possibly insulin as well. I had to take insulin with DS6 so I'm expecting to this time as well. I'll come back soon and keep you guys updated, thank you all for the well wishes. I need to get to bed before DH catches me on here.
I'll post more soon.

JL

Lynn,

jamielea's picture

Thanks for thinking of me Smiling You guys are all so sweet. I don't think I need a dulla, DH says he'll help out and we'll just put homeschool off for a while, it's almost summer anyway. But, again thanks for thinking of me, I almost cried Smiling when I read your post. Smiling

BTW, I'm 28 weeks, still have a ways to go!

DH's coming, bye!

Take care!

julhome's picture

So glad that you're home, and that you have some answers, even if it means a long road ahead of you. And hey...a baby girl...how sweet! You'll all be in my prayers. Check in when you are able.
Love,
Jul

Glad you're okay!

Lynn's picture

Remember I was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia at 29 weeks and Josie went to term. If we can do ANYTHING let us know. See if you can borrow a laptop that you can use in bed, because that's all that kept me sane when I was on bedrest!

How's about

Kerri's picture

a list of really good books she might want to read (so that someone else can just pick them up!)...

Good ideas Lynn. I'm in on whatever.

Congrats on having another female to join your household Jamie! Baby girls can be so sweet... although in my case babyhood was the only really sweet and angelic part so far! I mean for my daughter, but I suppose it would apply to me too! Laughing out loud

take care of yourself any way you can!

Kerri.

A girl!

Andrea's picture

Hang in there JamieLea! I think it's great you're having a girl! You needed someone there to take your side!

Andrea

Congratulations! :)

Susannah's picture

On the girl, of course, not on the bedrest. We love you! Take good care of yourself!

Love,

Susannah

Thanks everybody.

jamielea's picture

I've decided, BEDREST SUCKS! How boring, I think I'm sending DH to the store for some books, and magazines today. We'll see how long that keeps me content.

Ha ha!

Susannah's picture

Not laughing at your expense, Jamie, but when this experience is over, you and Lynn should get together and write a book by that title. Laughing out loud

You're so right

Kerri's picture

but you're stuck with, it so the best way to survive is to find a way to put a positive spin on it somehow. I didn't have bed rest with either of my pregnancies (thank goodness!) but I spent a lot of time last year too weak and weedy to get out of bed. I started to see it as a chance to really think. We spend so much of our time running around doing, that we rarely get chace to just *be* or to really think. Maybe some books can help you with that, so you emerge from your bedrest, not only with a beautiful baby daughter, but also having grown in some way. You might want to read Julie's self-examination thread!

And if it comes hard to find a positive angle, remember what they always say - fake it till you make it girl! Smiling

Kerri.

of this time to learn something new. Maybe knitting, crocheting, cross stitching, or learn about another culture. I know how crazy restless you must feel. I can never stay in bed when Im sick for more than a day but I know youll make it!
Im so happy for you, getting a daughter out of this. SIGH!
Have you thought of any names?
I used to love watching movie credits for name ideas!
Hang in there..........In 5 years youll look back and laugh!
O.K. maybe not laugh but at least smile!

Quilling

lgunnoe's picture

OHHHHHHHHhhhhh! Try quilling! Cheap supplies (you probably have most on hand already and inexpensive to "goof" up while learning!

For big-fat-wonderful-escapism reading....Have you read Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series?

The first four are out in paperback: Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, Drums of Autumn, and (the latest)The Fiery Cross. I loved these!

I'm so sorry that you have to be "confined," Sad but thrilled for you at the news of a daughter! How wonderful for you and "all" of your boys that they will have a little girl to love, protect, (and probably torment!) Eye-wink

Blessings, and continued prayers for your health!
