Does anyone have any experience with court-ordered drug treatment programs? It looks like a close family member will be entering one on Monday. I'm wondering how successful they can really be.
When I worked as a social worker with programs that utilized court-ordered drug treatment, what I found is that they are generally the same programs that you would use if you were using your private insurance to get drug treatment. The court or city will contract with those programs to provide a certain number of slots to people in court-mandadted treatment. So, those programs are just as effective as private programs because they are one in the same, at least in the two cities (Philadelphia and Dayton) where I worked.
Here in Oregon it's the same - the same treatment center. Also, I have a good friend who's a drug and alcohol councelor, and she's mentioned (when I've complained about my bil) that treatment centers have a pretty good rate of working. Although nothing is going to get you family member sober unless he WANTS to get sober. The nice thing about treatment centers is they get at least a month with no drugs, and sometimes that's all they need to be able to make the decision to stay that way. It gives them a chance to take a look at their life soberly, and realise where it's gone.
