Help! Hard water stains!

Ok, here's the story. My step dad is a truck driver. He's trying to get off the road, so he's starting a new job next week, one that lets him go home at night. This is good. As a 'coming home present' type thing we're gonna clean my moms house from top to bottom. (Tom is an anal retentive neat nick.) My mom is going through everything, and getting rid of stuff, so that the closets are neat, and I'm going up this week to help her get it finished. Here's the problem . . .
Their bathtub is pink. So is the toilet and sink. They have really bad hard water stains, and it makes them look brown. Frankly, it looks like the bathtub is never washed. My mom and I have absolutely NO idea what to do about them. This is the first time either of us has lived in a house with this bad of hard water. Do any of you know of any ways to get the stains off?

Start with vinegar ..

You can try a solution of 1/4 cup vinegar to 1 cup water in a spray bottle. Let it sit for a while, then apply elbow grease.
If that doesn't work, there are some stronger products available, like Lime-Away and CLR. I'm not sure if they are available everywhere. They are very strong. You'll need rubber gloves and open windows for them.
Good luck!

CLR

We live in an area of the country that enjoys Sticking out tongue very hard water. I would perish without my water softener!!!

We keep CLR in the house. As Rose says...it's powerful, but does the trick on hard water residue. Even our outside water is a problem. We use the well for outside watering and it's full of iron. Where the sprinklers hit the white siding on the house they eventually leave it yellowed. DH can get the iron deposits off with the CLR.

Any little working bits of plumbing, taps or chrome that get hard water deposits we just clean with CLR. I use it full strength on plumbing bits. I've even used it on glasses that have gotten hard water deposits in the dishwasher if I've happened to forget to put softener salt in the water softener.

don'f forget the baking soda

Mindy- OMG I've had the same problem but I tried CLR and HATED IT!!
The fumes for one thing but also the fact that even if I wore gloves if it splashed on my arm or any part of skin it burned!
But I found the PERFECT SOLUTION!!
I saw it on the DIY channel so I decided to try it.
Take a bucket of warm water and add about 1-2 cups of vinegar.
Wet down the tub with the solution and a sponge, rag, whatever.
Put some baking soda on the sponge and rub it on the tub.
WALK AWAY! Let it sit for about 5 min.
Rinse it using the sponge and vinegar solution.
It's kinda fun because it bubbles so much!
I have spent so much money in the past 4 years, after buying this house and having clear glass shower doors, buying Kaboom, powder cleansers, CLR, anything that I could find that might work.
The whole time it was in my kitchen cupboards!!!!
I started using it last year and now I dont use anything else!!
I clean my whole bathroom with it.
Think of the vinegar as spray and baking soda as powder cleanser!
I even use it in my kitchen, and if I just use the vinegar on the counters, I don't have to rinse!
OK, OK I'll stop. LOL As you can tell I love the way it cleans!!
And safe for my kids and pets!!

thanks! I think I have some CLR around here somewhere, and I'll take it with. I'm gonna try the baking soda and vinegar ideas first though, cause CLR gives me a headache. That way I'll have the CLR for backup if nothing else works! Laughing out loud

Hard Water Help?

Submitted by Adrian on Sun, 04/18/2004 - 6:06pm.

My neighbor was going crazy with a rust ring around her toilet bowl. She had tried everything you could think of. She finally find this stuff on the internet called spot-x. It worked on her rust ring. I can't see why it wouln't work on your bathtub. Might test a little spot first just to make sure. Sure is cheaper than buying a whole new bathroom set. Keep us posted on what happens.

hard water stains

I suggest you use vinegar or lemon juice which are great for removing hard water stains. They are both acidic which will cut through the stains no problem.
