Shelf life of milk?

Andrea's picture

Does anyone know how long milk is good for after the date stamped on the jug? I was duped into a buy one, get one free sale on gallons of milk and realized when I got home that the date on the jug was rapidly approaching. We're 2 days after the date now, is it still good? Also, is it ok to freeze milk? I froze the other jug.

Freezing ok

As for sell-by date, I think it's good for a couple of days after; I always go by smell personally. Let me see if I can dig up better info...ok, according to the University of Illinois Extension Service, milk is good 7 to 10 days past the sell-by date. Go by smell.

Freezing is fine.

Thanks!

Thanks Lynn! It was too good of a deal to pass up - 1.69 for 2 gallons of milk. Of course it's not a good deal if you have to toss it.

When raw milked (organic or conventional) is shipped from the farm to a milk plant it contains some bacteria. Progressive dairy farmers work hard at reducing the bacteria level. The milk plants pay extra for the milk based on how much bacteria is in it.

The milk plant kills certain classes of bacteria through a process called pasteurization. Without getting to technical some bacteria still exist in the milk that is bottled and delivered to the store.

The shelf life of milk sold at the store depends on the amount of bacteria that made it off the farm and through the bottling plant. It also depends on how the product is cared for after it leaves the bottling plant and the store.

I recommend you go by smell and taste.

I just learned that you can

I just learned that you can freeze milk! Who knew! It's helpful when grocery stores have great sales on milk, you can have one in the refrigerator and freeze the other. When it's time to use the frozen milk. Place it in cold water to defrost, shake it up and you have yummy milk again.

Btw, I always use the smell test too.
