Fax software question - HELP

Kerri's picture

I just got offered a WAH job doing proofreading and the like for the company DH works for (and I used to work for BC)... problem is that I need a fax machine.

Am I right in assuming that somewhere, probably already on my fancy new machine with Windows XP, I can get software that makes a fax machine unnecessary?? I'd rather not buy another lump of machinery, because I don't have the space, money or inclination if I can avoid it.

I found something under accessories, communication, called Fax Console, but as far as I can tell it still needs a fax machine or 'fax-capable printer', and then it handles faxes much the same as an email programme (it looks just like Outlook Express).

Hope someone knows the answers here, because the help files are badly misnamed!

Kerri.

Phone Tools

Kerri, my computer came with a program called "Phone Tools". I have sent and received faxed through it. I printed my faxes using my computer's printer. I also have a scanner so that I can scan documents that I didn't create on the computer and then fax them. Phone Tools works with Microsoft Office so that you can create a document using Word or Excel. Then you "print" it but change the printer to "Fax Capture". The documents are sent to the fax program so that you can "fax" it without ever having a hard copy.

I am really not good at explaning things Sad The program that you mentioned "Fax Console" should have a help file as well. Maybe, you could also check the help file of your word processing program?

Good luck!

Fax software

Fax software on the computer may or may not do you any good - you need to have a fax modem installed.

An alternative that a lot of people have found more convenient is services like www.efax.com

I brushed up against efax yes

I brushed up against efax yesterday in my travels, but it sounded damn expensive. Do I need a separate modem for fax?? I keep hearing talk about fax modem, but now my father tells me I already have a modem and I don't need another one. That phone tools thing sounds good Anja... just what I'm looking for. I have the printer and scanner so that's not a problem. In fact I'm hoping to convince the people at the other end to use email attachments instead of faxing, but...

Most of the time I can usually work stuff out from help files, but the help file on that fax console thing was very confusing, and I really wasn't clear whether I needed a special kind of printer or a special kind of modem... No wonder I've actually been looking at old fashioned fax machines this weekend!

So Mike, assuming that whatever modems I have are no good, how hard is it to install a fax modem?? Is it simply a plug-in type thing or am I going to have to open the machine up and stick something right in the middle in a fiddly slot somewhere??

another reason I don't want to spend a lot is because I know the company all too well, and I don't want the job to end up down the toilet after a few weeks and me screaming blue murder over a lump of fax machine that I've just spent a couple of hundred dollars on. I also want the freedom to walk away if necessary! Smiling
