vacuum cleaners

We are considering upgrading to a high-powered vacuum. I'm looking at the Oreck and also the Dyson. Anyone own either of these? How good is the suction? We have allergies, a fireplace, and will be adding a pet soon. I'm also getting really frustrated with our Eureka Windtunnel - I cleaned it today, replaced filters and belts and it STILL does not have that powerful suction that I want. I paid 180.00 for it at Wal-Mart a couple of years back.

I miss my plain ol' Dirt Devil!
I can't recommend it because I don't know how it compares but I was just used to my simple upright.
My mom's vacuum, which is now ours, is a Miele. It's a floor canister. You can tell it is probably an expensive vacuum, but I find it a bit complicated with all the hoses and hookups. I keep it all hooked up in the closet so I don't have to fuss with it every time, and that makes it easier to just pull it out when I need it (about 3x a day!). It has a HEPA filter and it runs quiet, and I think the suction is sufficient. It gets up all the hamster litter, anyway, but the kernels of corn from their food have to be picked up by hand because they don't fit under the rotary brushes. It has a retractable cord (just step on the foot pedal). Our model has a motorized rotary brush thingie that has a power button of its own on the handle. The other tools are stored neatly inside.
I think it's a good vacuum, but I still preferred the simplicity of my upright.
Reviews
There are a couple different vacs in the Clean and Organized Reviews section. I'll try to add some more; please, vac owners, add comments!

3 times a DAY, Susannah??
Now I am ashamed to admit mine sometimes only comes out twice a MONTH. Mostly I use it weekly, though now we have our new addition (9 week old black labrador) I'll probably have to do it more often.
Anyway, getting to the point, I have had an upright Dyson for several years and I think it's wonderful. The suction is very strong and it is far more powerful than an ordinary vacuum cleaner. I dread the day when it dies, as I certainly couldn't afford another one (the one we have was a Christmas present from my parents). You do have to be happy to confront your own dirt though! It can be very disconcerting to have the evidence of how dirty the floor was, whirling around in front of your eyes!

Mulling it over...
You guys have very nice vacuums! The more I read about vacuums, the more I am impressed by them! I think it would be hard to give up an upright - that's why I really like the Dyson and the Oreck - the Dyson is 19 pounds though and the Oreck is only 8! The Oreck got a few poor reviews on epinions about the suction, but they were mostly very good. The price is similar. Everyone seems to like the Dyson. I'd love to hear more opinions about any vacuums.
Rainbow
I used to own a rainbow vacuum, and I miss it. They're really great for people with allergies, because they filter the air, while you're vacuuming. Plus they're great for fleas. At the time that I bought it I had 1 cat, but my roommate had 2 (unfixed) cats, and they had a total of 15 kittens. Suffice to say, we had a lot of fleas. But you can put Eucalyptus Oil in the water of the vacuum cleaner, and the smell runs off fleas. I wouldn't have believed it, but it worked! We were completely flea free within a week. It was great. Plus, it's got GREAT suction. That vacuum cleaner did a better job vacuuming than any vacuum cleaner I've had. The down side? They're really spendy. But you can make monthly payments. So if you have the money (or the credit) I'd get a rainbow.
Over the Rainbow
Shortly after we bought our first home, DH bought a Rainbow vacuum cleaner...DH did not run the vacuum on a regular basis....I did. I hated the darn thing! Hated draging it out; hated filling it up; hated hauling it up and down the stairs (split level home with a sunken TV room, too) and HATED cleaning it after. Shortly after, I bought the cheapest Hoover upright I could find...and vacuumed happily with it for years! We now have the pricey-est "garage vac" in town!
I know many people dream of such vac's, but "caveat emptor" (buyer beware) their finance terms are awful, too.
Just my own experience!

stairs
That sounds like a hassle - we live in a Colonial, so I will definitely be dragging this thing up and down stairs a lot. And I don't know about the whole water thing.
True Enough
I have to admit that filling the rainbow up with water and all that was a pain, but my oldest daughter and I are severly asthmatic. And until Angel was 2 she also had chronic bronchitis. I was willing to put up with a bit of hassle to improve her health. Plus, as I mentioned, we had a LOT of fleas. They were eating us alive, and bombing didn't do any good. We were at the point of being willing to do ANYTHING to get rid of the darn things! Including take care of a rainbow vacuum cleaner!
Dyson
Guys, I got a Dyson! The yellow one! So far, we really like it - Honey was right, it is disconcerting to see all the gunk whirling around in front of you - we are getting lots of the very fine dust. Plus lots of dog hair, of course.
Yippee!
Andrea
Congratulations on your new Dyson!
I've certainly never regretted getting mine
This week I tripped on the stairs and dropped my Dyson, and the wand broke
Fortunately the parts seem to be easily obtainable as I managed to get another one with no problem. It was £30, but then a new Dyson would be about £180 so if I can keep my old one going a bit longer that's a good thing. Although I do hanker after the purple one! (Mine is boring, yellow and grey) The new wand has a purple trim though
May you and your Dyson be very happy together!!
What's not to like about a purple vacuum?
I think that's part of the Dyson's appeal--it comes in groovy colors like scarlet and orange.
