LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this movie
Dear ol' Bill does NOT go goofball or over-the-top as you might remember him doing in some other roles, like Ghostbusters, What About Bob, or his SNL career. He plays this very dry (crackling dry, as melcro once said) and is just as hilarious being low-key Zissou as any other of his comedy stylings.
I laughed so hard in some places that I fell over, seriously. I was completely delighted with just about everything about the movie. In order to fully appreciate the concept and "get" the inside jokes of the movie (like the beanie caps and the name of his boat) I think you have to be familiar with the Jacques Cousteau documentaries of the seventies, but it's not necessary to enjoy the film by any means.
Pure entertainment from beginning to end. Trajedy and triumph, love and loss, friendship and betrayal, it's all in there. Just make sure you watch it on an empty bladder.
