I have a hard time with market fluctuations

DH's stock shares were worth $40 for several months a few years ago, now they are worth $24. I don't deal well with the market ups and downs. I would rather have money collecting interest in a CD, or even a high interest savings account and NOT have stocks with changing values every other day.

The last month has seen very squirrely stock prices with the collapse of the sub-prime mortgage market. Also, we're going into a recession. Add to that that world economists have been saying for a while that the US economy is heading for another crash, and I don't trust the stock market at all. I do not think that it will be the investment tool to my generation that it was to the ones before.

I still have to convince DH of this before anything changes, but having retirement hinge on the stock market seems like insanity to me.
