Well, Jenny, it looks like it might have worked. DH poured eight large pots of boiling water down the sink and it's draining normally, now. Fingers crossed that this will be the last time we have trouble with the sink for a while.

DH was ready to go out and buy a rotoruter for over $300. Sanity prevailed.
