The New Homemaker Newsletter
for October 18, 2007
Dear Readers,
It's been a busy fall--so busy I haven't had much time to write you. But now I have some news so exciting I have to take a second here and tell you all about it.Announcing the 10 Questions Project
10Questions.com allows ordinary Americans to ask questions of all of the candidates--Republican and Democratic--via online video, and vote on the questions submitted by others in round one. The top ten questions will then be submitted to the candidates, who will then record and post their responses in round two. Viewers will then be able to vote whether the candidate actually answered the question.
The project is the brainchild of the folks at techPresident.com and is supported by MSNBC.com and the New York Times Editorial Board. The coalition of blogs co-sponsoring the project is broad and multipartisan: Afro-Netizen, Air America, AirCongress, BlackProf, Blip.tv, BlogHer, Buzzmachine, Care2, ColorofChange, Crooks&Liars, CultureKitchen, DailyKos, E-Democracy.org, FireDogLake, Free Press Action Fund, HotAir, Huffington Post, Hugh Hewitt, Instapundit, Latino Pundit, Media Bloggers Assoc., Michelle Malkin, MyDD, New York Observer, Open Left, Page One Q, Pajamas Media, Pam's House Blend, Patrick Ruffini, Politico, Politics Online, PoliticsTV.com, PrezVid, Racialicious, RawStory, RedState, RightMarch, RightWingNews, Rocketboom, SmartMobs, Smirking Chimp, TalkingPointsMemo, techRepublican, The New Homemaker, The Truth Laid Bear, Townhall, Treehugger, and VivirLatino.
The New Homemaker is thrilled to be a part of this innovative and important addition to the political process leading up to the 2008 presidential election. I'm asking you to vote on questions at 10Questions.com, and/or to submit your own questions via YouTube, Blink.tv or Yahoo Video. If you don't want to be on camera but have a question you want asked, I will record your question for you! Just send it to me with "10 Questions" in the subject line so I don't lose your email in the spam box. I will record just about any question sent to me, within reason, whether I agree with it or not.
Round One--where questions are submitted and viewers vote on them--is on now, and ends November 14th, so get your questions and votes in now! And join the discussion at TNH on what issues are critical to homemakers in America today.

Beat Insomnia Now

leep can be an elusive thing. Experience a couple nights of tossing and turning in bed, and it's all too tempting to reach for a sleep aid. But before you do, consider that several recent studies conducted at major institutions all over the country show that, despite their ordinary nature, simple behavioral strategies--like going to bed at the same time every night and avoiding afternoon naps--really do work. What's more, over-the-counter sleep medications can leave you feeling sluggish the next day, and "there’s very little evidence that these sleep aids actually result in significant sleep," says Mark Mahowald, M.D., director of the Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorders Center in Minneapolis.
What about prescription sleep drugs? For acute, short-term insomnia--such as that brought on by a stressful event, like a death in the family--experts say these medications can help. "In fact, by treating acute short-term insomnia [with prescription sleep aids] when it first occurs, we can actually prevent the development of long-term insomnia," says Dr. Mahowald. But for the occasional sleepless night, consider the following 10 tips. You may find they help you get to sleep just as well as popping a pill!
