Here was my error: I was checking off the "delete current picture" box at the same time that I was uploading, thinking that I was supposed to delete clothesline lady too. But obviously I was deleting the picture that I was trying to upload. (And then just as I went to edit my post my husband called for me to help with the Rug Doctor!)
