Ovulation and Conception--warning, may contain TMI
DH and I were watching a show about reproduction on the Discovery Channel or some such thing, and the doctor they were talking to said that sperm carrying the Y chromosone are faster and more vigourous than the sperm carrying the X. They actually seperate in the test tube given time, the boys swimming in the top layer, the girls at the bottom. Which means, IVF can take from the top or bottom of the test tube if the parents want one gender or the other (just raises the chances of course, no guarantee)!
What this means for conception is, if you have reproductive congress with the spouse right at the peak of ovulation, chances are, the Y sperm will reach the egg first, thus, BOY, but if you make the whoopie 2-3 days before ovulation, the Y's will have gotten there first, found nothing waiting for them, and have worn themselves out, but the slow-and-steady-wins-the-race X sperm will be there to tackle the egg when it does arrive, thus GIRL.
So if you're tracking your ovulation, either charting or using the home test kits, you can try this. Turns out, this is one of the main tenets of the Shettles Method. Scroll down a bit if you click on the link to read the basic recommendations for conceiving a boy.
FYI, if you like the Shettles Method, there is actually fertility software you can buy to track all the ovulation indicators to increase your chances of getting a)pregnant and b)the gender you want. What will they think of next?
