Deepest sympathy
I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your very dear friend. Losing someone out of the blue like that...it's a completely different kind of pain.
I know the look you spoke of--when I was a teenager someone in our community was accidentally killed on the job and his wife wore a similar expression for weeks afterwards, a masque of grief.
You're right, every moment with our families is precious. Everyday I look at my family and take a little snapshot with my mind's eye. Because my father died before I was born, I've always known there are no guarantees--anyone I know or love may not be here tomorrow. Growing up, my friends who'd never experienced the loss of a close family member thought I was morbid, but I don't think I was, I simply knew that tradgedy strikes whereever it will. It's no comfort to say that, or hear it, comfort can only be found with time, if at all.
Prayers for all.
