What are your ideal dimensions? If it's not too big, I think a Messenger style bag would be great, or if you wanted a handbag, I'd do one with "depth", that is, it's got four sides and a bottom, can sit flat on the floor--what's that called, Lynn? Or, a drawstring bag is great, your yarn is inside, the mouth of the bag is drawn almost shut, when you pull out more yarn, the ball stays in the bag and doesn't pop out and bounce all over the floor.

If I were to sew a knitting bag, I'd sew some seams down the inner pocket every two inches or so for straight needles and every four or five inches or so for circular needles. Um, that's 5 cm for straight and 10-13 cm for circular, or do they call them "round" on your side of the pond? This will keep your needles from tangling or getting mixed up.

I'd include another top-to-bottom inside pocket on the other side (no seams) that would hold your knitting books or patterns. It's nice to have a way to carry them that keeps them from getting bent.

I keep all my notions--the crochet hooks, measuring tape, tiny ruler, etc., in a see-through plastic zippered bag and throw it in my knitting bag or basket. I'd use outside pockets as catch-alls for sunglasses, car keys, cell phone, etc., but that's just me.

It'd probably be too much bother but the canvas totes that I sometimes carry my knitting in have a small inside pocket that zips shut, it's very handy to keep little things safe, like scissors, stitch counters, etc.

I've been wanting to knit then felt a knitting bag, but I've got so many other knitting projects that must come before that, I'm not even going to worry about it for now.
