we've got side tables, mantelpiece, window ledges... and the tables are all wood too. My parents had a large glass-topped table when I was a kid, and I can second the comments on fingerprints, because between me and the dog my mother was cleaning that table all the time!! They finally got rid of the central coffee table and reclaimed their living room.

one thing I would say is beware going for something too fashionable or stylish, because it's more likely to not suit your taste in 5-10yrs. Choose simple lines, or go for cheap! Of course if you fall in love with a piece that's totally different!
