My first trip to England I was so annoyed by all the cashier/service people who said "lovely." I almost never hear anyone say that in the US unless they are being sarcastic (e.g., "Oh, *that's* lovely," when you tear a hole in your pants). So at first I thought everyone was just really nasty.
