Did you block it?
Get it damp and pin it out to the measurements it's supposed to be. That'll help. Worse comes to worse, you can unravel it and try a different pattern. Some yarns just aren't meant to be certain things.
I'm sorry it didn't turn out! I can't tell you how often that happened to me when I first got serious about my knitting. It gets better.
