Pointsettias

Can you plant pointesettias in box planters and keep outside? In SD this time of year it's pretty gloomy until it burns off around noon. The way my house is angled, by this time, the pointsettias would be in shade. And over the next few weeks (holiday season) the temperature will be 40 low and about 62 high.

Please advise.
