Looks like she's going to be alright
My brother called me tonight to tell me that the surgery went well and that the doctors think she's going to be fine. It was a clean break so they put a steel rod in her leg to brace the bone (it was her femur) and they're going to leave it in there. It's apparently better than a cast, but it's permanent.
After close observation the doctors decided that her head injury is not serious, thank the Dear Sweet Lord, and don't expect any complications or lasting effects from it. I worked for a time for a company that provided services to people with disabilities and I know what traumatic head injuries can do. This doesn't appear to be one, for which I will always be profoundly thankful.
She's been responsive and joking with her parents. My brother and her stepmother have been gently teasing her about it. At one point Hillary tried to lift up a pillow to whack my brother with it, which is a good sign, I think.
She'll start physical therapy tommorrow and won't be able to go to school for a couple of weeks, but children's bones are supposed to be quick to heal, she should be able to bear weight on it in about two weeks.
My brother still doesn't have the police report but as near as he can tell, she was running across the road from one curb to another and a car came around the corner and clipped her. It was the impact of the fall that broke her bones. Goodness, I hated typing that last bit.
So please keep Hillary's health and speedy recovery in your prayers for a bit. I won't be easy about this until she's conspicuously out of the woods, but my brother said the doctors are convinced that she's going to be fine.
And that's what I know right now.
