When DD8 threw up all over her carpet, I cleaned up the solids and then sprinkled baking soda over the spot. It absorbs odors. I vacuumed it up the next morning. You may also try to use some Carpet Fresh deodrant powder made for pet odors (I think, it also contains baking soda). I treated the remaining stain with some carpet shampoo. Everything, including the smell, came out (I just went to sniff her carpet to make sure )
