THE sock book
This is the definitive book on making socks the traditional way--on double pointed needles, which is just not that hard when you grasp that you're only using two of the needles at a time, just as you do when you're knitting anything. Nothing in knitting beats the thrill of turning a heel for the first time; I still have to stop and pet myself and admire my work whenever I do it, dozens of pairs after my first. Nancy Bush has compiled not just a number of lovely sock patterns but instructions for several different heels and several different toes; once you get the hang of her basic sock pattern you need never buy a sock pattern again and still have tons of interesting and new knitting to do just by varying the heels and toes. This is truly one of my "desert island" knitting books, though frankly I don't know if I'd really need socks on a desert island...
