This book makes me cry!

I found this book at a yard sale last summer and later discovered it on one of my suggested read-aloud lists for homeschooling. This is a true story about Sarah Whitcher, who got lost in the woods for four days when she was 3, in 1783. I so identified with the mother in this story on the first reading that I could hardly get through it, I was so choked up. It contains elements of supernatural Providence that never fail to move me. Sarah Whitcher was the author's great-great-great-great-great aunt, so there is a personal aspect to the telling. The illustrations are warm and pleasing and convey a homey realism. Several are two-page spreads with no print, and they add to the emotional power of the story. The bear in question is whimsically pictured "coming and going" at the beginning and end of the book, respectively. This is a must-have to share with your children!
