Pork Busters!

Susannah's picture

I love this! Can't help but promote it because it seems like a highly worthwhile bipartisan effort for keeping Congress accountable in the spending dept. Both parties are guilty of pork barrelling.

Response to The Christian Paradox

Susannah's picture

I've just finished a series on my blog...a response to an article on Christianity appearing in Harper's last August. (I didn't think Lynn would let me blog about it here. Too much quoting of the you-know-what! LOL) So, here it is...

Got me a blog...

Susannah's picture

..and the blog pleased me.

Well, folks, I finally went and did it!

Liveblogging in Katrina Aftermath

Susannah's picture

This guy is blogging from downtown New Orleans, determined to stick it out as long as possible:

I don't have access to t.v. news, so I usually turn to the internet for news.

I'm back [Second Try]

Susannah's picture

My first blog attempt seems to have been scrambled somehow. Forgive me if I end up repeating myself.

I've ended the media fast, so here I am, reporting back! Pretty much stuck to it with a few exceptions. (DH talked me into watching *Kung Fu Hustle* with him. It was pretty good! Weird, but funny.) I read a bit here and there, without even thinking about it, but definitely stayed away from internet forums, radio, and most videos. I allowed the kids to watch their videos, though. There just ain't no homeschooling in this house without the occasional electronic distraction for busy toddlers.

I just wanted to say...I checked it out and he has a great website! He's one of my current favorites (well, for the last several years).

Large Family Logistics

Susannah's picture

I'm putting this in Homeschooling although it's about homemaking in general. Someone on another site turned me on to this one and I think it looks good. Similar to what Lynn is trying to accomplish here but more specific to large families who homeschool:

In Praise of Yard Sales

Susannah's picture

Springtime comes early in Georgia, and with the sunny skies and the flowering of the dogwood comes yard sale season. In my part of the country, it’s a long season, stretching from early spring (March) into late fall (November), and sometimes later if they are held indoors. The best yard-saling weekend of the year in Royston coincides with the local October-fest.

Where two or three are gathered...

Susannah's picture

Even virtually, gathering together to pray is effective. Messy Christian has set up a virtual prayer room for those devasted by the tsunami.

Animation of Tsunami

The Belmont Club has linked to an animation of the tsunami, showing how they traveled from the epicenter, and how long it took.

Omigosh! Ann Coulter and Lynn have something in common!

Susannah's picture

I just had to come back and tease Lynn about this. Someone has produced a "documentary" about Ann Coulter, and on the website I found this quote:

"Find out about Ann’s passion for such rock bands as the Grateful Dead and the Ramones."

Phone Cards for Wounded Soldiers

Susannah's picture

Do a good deed! From Hugh Hewitt's blog (Hughhewitt.com):

Finally, from a naval officer I respect a great deal, an e-mail on how to aid wounded troops in the two weeks left before Christmas:

"Yellow ribbons tied around trees and red, white and blue stickers on the backs SUVs saying "Support our Troops" are things that make civilians feel good but do nothing for the men and women actually in uniform.

Pretty!

Mental Health Screenings Update

Susannah's picture

We had touched on this a few months ago, and I got an update today from HSLDA:

Concerns About Mental Health Screening Legislation

Recent reports and rumors that Congress is passing mandatory mental health screening legislation have been circulating the airwaves and media outlets. HSLDA has been watching and working behind the scenes on this issue for some time. Our concern stems from any attempt by the government to usurp the right of parents to direct the medical decisions of their children, including what medical tests their children receive and who tests them.

I love these guys. Here's a little gem from Derbyshire, just a little sample.

Bless a Soldier

Susannah's picture

Found this note this morning on The Corner (NRO Online):

MORE ON FALLUJAH [Rich Lowry]

"Rich,

I am also a professor at a military-related institution, and my little brother is an enlisted Marine (a sniper with 1-3) in Fallujah. This weekend he called for the first time since the battle began. He informed us that a large number of the residents of Fallujah, before fleeing the battle, left blankets and bedding for the Marines and Soldiers along with notes thanking the Americans for liberating their city from the terrorists, as well as invitations to the Marines and Soldiers to sleep in their houses. I've yet to see a report in the media of this. Imagine that.

Talking to my radio

Susannah's picture

James Lileks astutely observes in his latest "Backfence" that no amount of screaming at the television screen will deter the candidates from saying what they’re saying.

Let’s have a show of hands: Who yelled at the t.v. or radio during the debate? (Insert mental picture of me, sheepishly raising her hand.)

Debate Commentary--Lighter Side

Susannah's picture

Jim Geraghty at the Kerry Spot has to win the award for the funniest observations:

On Bush:

"I like the heavily-overcaffinated, fired-up Bush a lot better than the Blinky McPursedlips we got the other night."

I predict:

Somewhere among the news reports on this story...

Headline: Militants Target Israel in Egypt

"Fourteen Israelis were among 27 killed in separate blasts at Egyptian resort areas near Taba. Militant islamic groups have claimed responsibility. However, some are linking the attack to recent targeting of militant leaders in Gaza by the Israeli Defence Force."

Neat-o Picture

Instapundit (Glenn Reynolds) recently posted a nice picture of Afghani school girls. I can't say why I like it so much. It's so crisp, and joyful, and...uplifting? Positive? I don't know...

The Edison Trait

Do you have a child like this?

http://www.elijahco.com/help/articles/edison.htm

A sample:

"A child with the Edison trait makes sudden, astonishing connections. Because his inner critic disallows neither the ridiculous nor the sublime, he can be innovative, ingenious, and fascinating. He can see ordinary things in extraordinary ways, which is the very essence of creativity."

Why I Read Lileks

Susannah's picture

Shaun, this is from your corner of the country, isn't it?

From his latest Bleat:

"I wonder sometimes, I really do. I imagine some people find the Bleat because someone linked to a gust of blather, and after six or seven visits they wonder hey, why aren’t you Defrosted Angry Neocon all the time? Maybe because I’m not Defrosted Angry Neocon. I have my moments, of course. But mostly this page is what it is. Some movie reviews, some kid stories, nostalgic tripe, dispatches from middle age, sugared chaff, small beer, red meat. I am resigned to the fact that I will disappoint everyone, eventually. But just so you know: I discuss politics, but I am not a politician. I discuss music, but I’m hardly a musician. I write about movies, but I’ve only been on one side the camera, not the other. I write about art, but I can’t draw. I write about parenthood, but like most I’m making it up as I go along. Appearances to the contrary, I do not mistake my ability to write about something as proof that I’m right. It could just mean I have a gift for ordering my ignorance into pleasing shapes. "

Prodigal Returns

Susannah's picture

I've been all over the internet but here, keeping up with the political scene and reading All The Blogs That Matter. Also, I've been busy homeschooling every day (thank you, Jo, for all your help!). Furthermore, we've been at our wits' end with Elias's tummy problems (visit to specialist looming). Nevertheless, I have missed being here. I spend too much time online and never seem to have the time to come and post like I want to.

No WAY!

Susannah's picture

I didn't think this was for real at first. This just doesn't seem possible in America. Would Illinoisans really put up with this?
